How do use your credit card/s?

As in, what do you use yours for specifically? Specific purchases or all spending?

Is there anyone here that uses theirs solely for online purchases and purchases over £100?

I'd like to change the way I use mine, to use them just for online and purchases over £100...

I pay mine in full, however, I feel it messes up with the general money flow and budgeting having payments in full come out a month later or future dates...

Anyone else feel this way?

I just use mine to spread the cost of odd one-off items - new glasses, a pair of boots, etc - and pay it off over a couple of months.

I get rewards so buy all food, petrol, household stuff, pay for holidays and what ever I can, so I points and money back.

I pay it all off in full every month, and reconcile my accounts at the end of the month when I get paid.

Sure, Do you pay interest doing it like this though?

I have one from Amazon I use it for online spending on stuff online. I get points. I leave a small balance on it, like 20 quid as apparently they cancel them if balance is zero sometimes. Another one from my bank that I got for a big purchase 4K limit 18 months interest free. Ipaid it off now keep for emergencies. It keeps me out my overdraft so works for me.

HerRoyalNotness · 08/01/2022 21:23

I put everything on it then lay at end of the month. The cash back is good. always a couple of hundred every other month

Itshothothot · 08/01/2022 21:25

I have the John Lewis one and pay for everything with it (apart from 2 direct debits)

They give me £400 a year in reward vouchers.

BasketBlocks · 08/01/2022 21:26

Large purchases that I pay off straight away, for the joint liability under the CCA.

HippeePrincess · 08/01/2022 21:27

I use it in different ways, I’ve used it to buy one off purchases life holidays or cars and paid it back over a few months. I’ve used it to make sure larger or online purchases are covered but this will be paid off in full. I’ve used it when I need to stretch the budget a little or if I’m expecting to need cash in the bank before payday.
I’ve used it so I could pay for a months worth of expenses so I had the cash to pay of DP’s overdraft and then he could pay me back over a few months without fees.
I have a 0% interest card though so it is always worth doing something like this.

Ilikewinter · 08/01/2022 21:28

I just use mine for big purchases to get the section 75 cover...... which was invaluable when I had to claim against Virgin atlantic - a long story - and any online purchases.
I pay the card in full each month to avoid interest.
Ive also got one with a small balance that is on 0%, ill pay that off before the promption ends.

They don't. The notify you that that they will cancel if not used by a certain date. Then you can make a small purchase on it to make sure it isn't. No need to pay any interest
JaceLancs · 08/01/2022 21:29

I have one which I use for day to day spending
Another which I use for online only
Both of these I pay in full each month
I also have a few others which I don’t use unless needed eg unexpected boiler breakdown or car repair
One I keep just for holiday spending

Same here. It’s used for everything barring utilities and mortgage. Paid off every month.
Woeismethischristmas · 08/01/2022 21:42

@SeasonFinale good to know I think I read a review somewhere so I kept a small balance. Interest is only 30p a month so not breaking the bank.

reluctantbrit · 08/01/2022 21:43

I use it for all my shopping, online and in-store. Paid in full after each invoice.

My debit card is the back-up, my account is mainly used for direct debits and invoices only.

It works for us, we have a largely average spending per month so no real surprises unless we book a holiday or a larger unusual purchase.

We both have a John Lewis card and we get decent vouchers back.

ZenNudist · 08/01/2022 21:45

I use an m&s one but I need a better one. It gives me vouchers I spend in m&s. I really need a better perk. I pay it off in full.

BurntO · 08/01/2022 21:46

I use mine at the end of the month when the bank is empty…

gogohm · 08/01/2022 21:47

Most things, pay off every month

2pinkginsplease · 08/01/2022 21:47

I use mine for petrol and food shopping, I pay it off at the end of the month and I get cash back at the end of the month too.

BoodleBug51 · 08/01/2022 21:48

After having my bank account emptied by fraud on my debit card, I use it for everything and it's just paid off in full by direct debit each month. I keep the limit low (£2.5k) so I can always do this. I can't remember the last time I used my debit card.

I've got a second card with a £25k limit that i never use but keep for emergencies like vet bills.

KiloWhat · 08/01/2022 21:52

I use it if I need the protection for a big purchase. Or if I'm buying online and might return items.

Always paid off.

PurpleSky300 · 08/01/2022 21:52

@Quirkyme I generally close/swap cards as soon as the 0% period ends so I don't pay interest, most of the time.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 08/01/2022 22:00

John Lewis card used for everything apart from utilities, paid off every month . Love the vouchers.

Adelaide1810 · 08/01/2022 22:00

I use it for my weekly food shop as I get 1% back in rewards from my bank and then pay it off straight away so never pay interest. Also use it for big purchases such as holidays for the added protection.

Youdoyoutoday · 08/01/2022 22:03

We get cash back on our visa so absolutely everything goes on it and we pay it off in full each month.

EmmaStone · 08/01/2022 22:12

Yup, pay for everything, pay it off in full each month, get JL vouchers. Also have one from my bank, although don't use it. Also have one for overseas transactions as no charges, again gets paid off in full.
