To ask have you any idea why this happened

Posting here for traffic

A few days a go while doing normal evening routine at home, the back of my right hand itched. As you do gave it a light scratch with my left hand and carried on. Within seconds all the veins in my right hand swelled up greatly to form like one big mass. It was soft and squidgy and dark blue all over. Went to bed after an hour of it looking the same.

Next 3 days I'm left with a black flat patch on the back of my hand.

Any ideas as to why this happened or has anyone had the same thing. Seems to trivial to ask Gp.

Sounds like you got bitten by something.

SleepingStandingUp · 08/01/2022 16:35

Def sounds like a reaction to something so scratched cos you got bit or something on your hand? I'd at least show it a pharmacist

Tootsey11 · 08/01/2022 16:35

There was nothing on my hand, no flies, bugs, nothing.

Cuddlywaterfall · 08/01/2022 16:36

Sounds like a spider bite. You don't notice till they have scuttled off, you give it a scratch then whoosh

SleepingStandingUp · 08/01/2022 16:37

@Tootsey11

There was nothing on my hand, no flies, bugs, nothing.
That's what Peter thought
Tootsey11 · 08/01/2022 16:39

There was no spider, there isn't any redness or piercing like a sting. I was just getting up to make a cuppa from the sofa. I'm in Ni. We don't have spiders that bite here and its winter so no flies bugs etc.

Could it be a burst blood vessel on the back of your hand?

I had a similar thing years ago - my dog was off-lead in the woods, I was walking along quite happily swinging the leash and the metal bit hit me on the knuckles. It swelled up really quickly and looked pretty impressive!

Tinkerbellflowers · 08/01/2022 16:44

Were you hands really cold and then you put them into hot water? That can make them itchy.

Mundra · 08/01/2022 16:45

No- it sounds just like a burst blood vessel. As long as it's going it's fine. I had one before Christmas, and was freaking out a little, and called 111, and a GP rang me. Just one of those things that happens occasionally.

Could it be a burst blood vessel on the back of your hand?

This is what I was going to ask. I had almost the EXACT same thing happen as OP (scratched my hand, blood vessels swelled up, then large bruise) but that’s because I have weak blood vessels as I have an autoimmune disease that attacks my blood vessels. I also knew for certain it was a burst blood vessel since I’ve seen them so often when someone tries to do an IV on me in hospital and it doesn’t go correctly (due to crap veins). It’s a little odd, if you’re a normal healthy person, to have it just happen from scratching your hand, but maybe if your hands were more delicate (been exposed to cold/warm/lots of work/chemicals/I don’t know?), it might happen.

newusername1977 · 08/01/2022 18:44

I agree with burst blood vessel. I get them in my hand every so often. They are close to the skin there and can burst, it's essentially like a bruise so turns black and blue. It usually has a burning sensation when it happens. The first time was scary as I didn't know what it was.

immersivereader · 08/01/2022 18:45

Very odd

Tootsey11 · 08/01/2022 20:49

After reading up, I am thinking it is a burst blood vessel, although can't understand why. I have very itchy lower legs as well, and as my mother has vasculitis and pheblitis (sp), I'm now thinking I may be going down the same route.

I also had inflammation of the blood vessels in my thighs with coronavirus so not sure what is going on.

TheVolturi · 08/01/2022 20:57

Sorry op, not laughing at you, it was supposed to be at @sleepingstandingup

SleepingStandingUp · 08/01/2022 21:02

Op def sounds like you need to see the dr

Everythingsokreally · 08/01/2022 21:06

Sounds like a burst blood vessel. Oddly, I used to get them every so often in my wrists/bottom of my hands probably in my 20s/early 30s, and my mum says she did too. Reading this has made me realise that it hasn’t happened for years now (I’m in my 40s now). Wonder what that is all about?!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/01/2022 21:16

The vein broke when you scratched your hand. Happened to me when I bashed a vein in my leg. Had a really massive scary looking bruise!

NorthDowns · 08/01/2022 21:31

Possibly covid arm. Worth a Google.
It doesn’t necessarily appear at the injection site & can affect any part of the body.

Wonnle · 08/01/2022 21:33

Dermatitis , do your legs itch more in hot water ?

Tootsey11 · 08/01/2022 23:59

@Wonnle, they do itch in hot water and at night in bed.

@Thecurtainsofdestiny, I scratched for all of a second, so no real pressure. Surely the skin would be torn.

@NorthDowns, I'm not vaccinated so not covid arm.

OP posts:
Thecurtainsofdestiny · 09/01/2022 00:03

I don't know- my skin wasn't torn. The vein was fragile and just broke.

Stigsmother · 09/01/2022 02:29

I break blood vessels on the palm side of my fingers quite often, usually near the bendy bits.
Usually I don't have any idea that I have done it until my finger turns black...Confused

Burnamer · 09/01/2022 02:35

OP - if you’re in Northern Ireland you do have false widows which bite and can cause nasty reactions. I’m not saying that’s what it was but just be aware.

@SleepingStandingUp I don’t understand the joke and it’s making me feel really stupid. Would you mind explaining?

Monty27 · 09/01/2022 02:52

The spider bit you and scaddaddled
