To want a UK hotel room which sleeps a family of five

Dishwashersaurous · 08/01/2022 09:47

So, thinking about having a break in another UK city for a couple of days over half term just to have a break.

We're a family of five, three children primary age.

I envisaged a hotel room with two double beds, like those you get in US motels. Kids more than happy to share a bed.

We've only camped or cottages in UK before.

Now, despite searching and searching it seems that it is impossible to get a hotel room to sleep five. Which means two rooms, which obviously is much more expensive, when literally going to just be sleeping. We all happily sleep in one room in a tent.

So, good people of mumsnet, AIBU to hope someone can help me find a hotel room which sleeps five. Or don't they exist

Booking.com allows you to enter number of adults and children in your party as well as rooms required, location etc. It's not perfect (it does suggest 2 room hotels too) but it definitely helps. You don't need to book with them afterwards if you don't want to, but it might be helpful as a search tool.

www.crieffhydro.com/hotel/

Crieff Hydro has family rooms for up to 6 people.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/01/2022 12:16

Sorry I see that's already been suggested!

Slobberstops · 08/01/2022 12:18

We use premier inns and their beds are pretty big so them and the emergency sleeping bag work well for the five of us. We don’t get the over priced breakfast and eat pastries in our room and have never had a problem. Wouldn’t dream of booking two rooms. Love the YHA too where we all def get a bed.

MazzleDazzle · 08/01/2022 12:18

I wouldn't give sneaking an extra child in a second thought. The fire thing is ridiculous as there's no way that the hotel would have a clue who is in and who is out at the time. They certainly wouldn't be checking guest lists against the people who are out of the building.

Exactly!

When I’ve booked hotels they aren’t interested in who else is in the room with me. The last time I make a booking for 5 (two rooms), for some reason it was on the system as 2 adults only. The idea that someone from reception has a list of every person in the hotel at the exact time of a fire is laughable! What about people who stay out all night? Or are in clubs or bars? Also, people take guests back to their hotel room all the time. It’s no different.

I have openly walked through reception with an extra child and no one cares. Not if it’s a big chain hotel.

I’ve also phoned the hotel directly and they’ve been able to help with extra beds or I’ve offered to bring my own.

It’s the online booking system that’s impossible to get past OP. You need to phone direct.

As for insurance being invalidated and not having a leg to stand on - for what exactly? I’ve made claims on my travel insurance ans was never asked how many people were in the room.

How old are the children?
AliceMcK · 08/01/2022 12:24

I’ve literally (2 mins ago) just cancelled a two room hotel booking in favour of a caravan for this exact reason, saved almost £300 in doing it this way.

Thatsplentyjack · 08/01/2022 12:30

Have youbtried phoning the hotels direct? Websites generally don't let you go over bed capacity but they may have extra beds that can be added on request since it would just be for a child.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2022 12:31

Interconnecting rooms?

Mummyto2rugrats · 08/01/2022 12:32

I know Apex hotels have family rooms which is two doubles if that helps

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/01/2022 12:32

Balmore guest house in Edinburgh has a family room with 2 double beds and one single. So sleeps 5.

cherryonthecakes · 08/01/2022 12:34

They are often called family rooms - 2 doubles and a sofa bed. I have booked Travelodges and Premier Inns that had this sort of configuration

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 08/01/2022 12:34

If you want a cheapo one, you won't get a family of 5 in any of them.

InTheLabyrinth · 08/01/2022 12:35

Have you tried booking.com for the dates and city you are interested in? I just randomly put in Manchester and mid week for when I think half term is, and it came up with a couple of 1 room possibilities (granted, most were 2 rooms, but worth looking at).

NamechangeTTC · 08/01/2022 12:38

Fairmont St. Andrews had 2 doubles and a single in the room when we stayed (3 adults)

housemaus · 08/01/2022 12:44

@Hocuspocus99

Voco Reading , formerly Madjeski Hotel , stayed there numerous times ! Great for Lego land etc
Oh and the beds are SO comfy!
Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/01/2022 12:44

www.booking.com/hotel/gb/alexanderthomson.en-gb.html

This hotel in Glasgow has "quadruple rooms" with 2 double beds. One extra bed can be requested.

SD1978 · 08/01/2022 12:49

Most people I know in this situation book a premier inn and sneak a kid in........

Orangebonbon · 08/01/2022 12:49

cherryonthecakes But in a premier inn family room room are only allowed 2 adults 2 kids, can be 3 kids if the small child is below 3 I think and requires a cot bed.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 08/01/2022 12:53

@Dishwashersaurous if you go onto the holiday inn app it gives you the choice of Express, Hotel or Crown Plaza

We personally have stayed in ones in Edinburgh, Plymouth and near Legoland

cherryonthecakes · 08/01/2022 12:53

My youngest is 15 now but we used to book a family room and found that 2 doubles and sofa bed worked well.

helpfulperson · 08/01/2022 12:55

I've just looked on booking.com for Edinburgh and it comes up with a few options.

underneaththeash · 08/01/2022 12:58

There are lots. If you go onto booking.com select England as the destination - 2 adults and 3 children 1 room. Then select hotels in the filter.
