To want a UK hotel room which sleeps a family of five

Dishwashersaurous · 08/01/2022 09:47

So, thinking about having a break in another UK city for a couple of days over half term just to have a break.

We're a family of five, three children primary age.

I envisaged a hotel room with two double beds, like those you get in US motels. Kids more than happy to share a bed.

We've only camped or cottages in UK before.

Now, despite searching and searching it seems that it is impossible to get a hotel room to sleep five. Which means two rooms, which obviously is much more expensive, when literally going to just be sleeping. We all happily sleep in one room in a tent.

So, good people of mumsnet, AIBU to hope someone can help me find a hotel room which sleeps five. Or don't they exist

Just stayed in the Athena in London. 5min walk from Paddington. Not glamorous but clean, tidy, great staff. Was sooo pleased to find somewhere we could stay all together

Blackpool rooms sleep 5

lucillelarusso · 09/01/2022 18:51

@Dishwashersaurous

Thanks all for the tips.

The sleeps 5 website, alas, most of these are not accurate anymore.

And the various suggestions of chains when putting in five no options come up, even if it let's you put in five. Eg marriott has rooms with two double beds which is exactly what I want but won't allow me to book for five

So Looks like phoning is the only option and like most people I do admin really late in the evening .

Hope that other people find this helpful as well

Marriott is owned by Mormons who traditionally have large families. Call them. They've made up a room to sleep 4 children and 2 adults on many occasions for us.

What dates are you looking to book and how far would you consider driving. Area please.

Tigger1895 · 09/01/2022 18:55

Plenty of places have interconnecting rooms for this reason.

Dishwashersaurous · 09/01/2022 18:57

Interesting about marriotts.

I'm definitely going to have to carve up sometime to call.

Brittania Hotels do 5 person family rooms

1 double, 1 single and a bunk bed

saleorbouy · 09/01/2022 18:59

We often ring hotels after doing searches on the Internet.
Usually if you explain your circumstances you will be able to get a larger room and an extra bed put in.
Many websites only allow for "normal" family situations and "computer says No" for anything out if the ordinary.
Better to talk to a human and get some personal service.
My OH recently managed to get an evening meal added to the package that made it far more attractive than any offerings for the same place on the Internet.

RedRideMeGood · 09/01/2022 18:59

Hi, I work as a hotel receptionist. Trust me there will be someone there til late if you want to call. What sort of area are you looking? I may be able to help.

Another vote for YHAs. They have ensuite rooms for five, usually 1 double bed with a bunk above and then another set of bunks for 2.
If you do camping you'll like YHAs, they're not luxurious but good prices, clean, bar and restaurant etc and usually they are in really good locations! Plus you can take your own food so cuts the cost down.
Lots of families use them so kids can make friends, etc.
We're hoping to go to London this spring and will probably opt for a YHA.
Go for it!! Good luck.

nicegirl73 · 09/01/2022 19:17

I also have three children and always book a suite as they tend to have two nice doubles and urgent a separate soon even.

orangesnapples · 09/01/2022 19:22

A few years ago but we found a brilliant no thrills room in Hastings. Over look the sea and the room slept 6.
I think this one was the Grand
We also had a room in Brighton, hotel was opposite the pier which slept 5 can't remember the name.
And a Wetherspoons in Minehead which had 2 huge beds and they supplied a pull out bed. Room a was massive and very clean.
This was all before Covid times though.

8 bed bunk room.

Not sure if this one in London has been mentioned but we’ve stayed here with three kids before . Tiny bathroom but enough beds and space in the room. Two doubles and a single set slightly in a separate area for a teenager! Was good value too for London we paid £111 in July

Book for 4. Do room only and go out for breakfast or else just order room service brekkie and share, 1 parent checking in and out while the 9ther parent waits with the kids in the lounge wouldn't be abnormal. Job done. They will never know.

seat7a · 09/01/2022 19:48

Try a hotel from the Hilton group. They have a great family policy "Children up to 18 years old stay free (with existing bedding) when sharing a room with a paying adult on a room only rate." This family policy is listed under 'additional hotel policies" towards the bottom of the page of whichever hotel you look at. We always stay at Hilton's for this reason. We try and book a king room with a sofa which pulls out into a bed. That sort of set up could work? We found though that you have to book the room for 2 adults and pick which one is best for all of you. The way the policy works is that you book for the adults and kids are good to join for free. We did used to phone the hotel to confirm as we weren't sure but it's fine and above board. If you put in 5 people then it won't come up with a room most likely. Hope I'm making sense! Hamptons also often have good set ups with King bed/sofa bed but that's Hilton group too.

We stayed in a family room in a hotel in Kenilworth that was like this. 2 doubles plus a double sofa bed.
Hotel was cheap and cheerful in some ways but was ok and room was quiet and spacious.
And there was a small indoor pool. Just wouldn’t recommend eating dinner there.

It was well located for Warwick castle and Stratford upon Avon.

It was a QHotels one - Chesford Grange
It was well located for

RobotValkyrie · 09/01/2022 20:25

I tend to use Expedia for that kind of search. It works well for 4, not sure about 5...

We either do 2 premier inn rooms or stay at the Hilton. Hilton do a room that sleeps 5 although almost always works out cheaper to book 2 premier inn rooms.

Della1 · 09/01/2022 20:51

Family of 5, 3 primary aged DC. You can share a room in premier inns. We love PI- clean, kids get a free breakfast, good price. There isn’t an option to book one room on the website but phone and ask- they have always been happy to let the five of us share.
