Tesco nonsense

I've got Conjunctivitis in both eyes (sore, red, itchy, weeping) and as I'm recovering from a stroke and it's icy out, I sent DH to Tesco (a huge store) for eye drops. He picked some from the shelf, went to pay for them, was told he couldn't have them as "they aren't meant to be on the shelf" (there were about 10 bottles on the shelf), and was told to go to Pharmacy, so he did - they were out of stock!

He's now gone further afield, to Asda pharmacy......

i guess they are regulated. it was a mistake....short staffed, stressed staff trying to do the jobs of several people

not the worst thing to happen

CheshireCats · 07/01/2022 21:40

They can't legally sell a pharmacy only medicine though the normal tills. Sounds like it had been put out on the shelves in error. Which is probably why the pharmacy counter haven't got any stock- their stock has been put out on to the normal shop shelves 🤷🏼‍♀️

Troublesometooth · 07/01/2022 21:41

If an item has a p inside a box symbol then it’s pharmacy only and has to be sold by a qualified pharmacist. Items sometimes get put out on shelves by mistake.

Mamamia7962 · 07/01/2022 21:42

Why didn't he just ask the pharmacist if he could have one of the ones that had been put on the shelf by mistake?

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 07/01/2022 21:45

why did he not take the "not allowed at the till" drops to the pharmacy?

chaosrabbitland · 07/01/2022 21:45

what the sales assistant should have done was told him to take the bottle he had in his hand over to pharmacy and then they could have sold it through the till , it does happen i work in a large pharmacy and beauty store and yes from time to time sometimes this has happened by less experianced staff that put out the delivery

Blueeilidh · 07/01/2022 21:46

Surely the shop assistant who realised the error should have returned them to the pharmacy so then they wouldn't be out of stock, although I guess there was probably some additional red tape, management investigation etc. that prevented this. Really though, I wouldn't bother with getting something from the pharmacy, just clean with cooled boiled water and use a cold teabag to soothe.

PixieLaLa · 07/01/2022 21:47

If they had been put on the shelf by mistake then why couldn’t the pharmacy take one of those and scan it through? Confused

gah2teenagers · 07/01/2022 22:13

There’s no common sense nowadays. That is all.

TheOccupier · 07/01/2022 22:15

No self service checkout?

nettytree · 07/01/2022 22:42

If its the optrex drops for conjunctivitis, they are supposed to be kept in the fridge. They won't be usable if left on the shelf.

Yubaba · 07/01/2022 23:00

The optrex drops don’t get delivered through the Tesco ordering system they come from the pharmacy wholesalers so it definitely wasn’t them.
It was probably Brolene eye drops.

DoNotGetADog · 07/01/2022 23:07

They only need to be refrigerated once they’re open, not in the shop.
TheCreamCaker · 08/01/2022 16:16

Mamamia7962 He did ask, they said No - as I say, madness prevails.

The delivery probably has to be checked in by the pharmacy before it can be sold.

She has a point though, it’s a minor inconvenience but not something I’d start a thread over personally

Putting medication that can only be dispensed at a pharmacy on the open shelf is pretty bad to be honest.
Eveready345 · 08/01/2022 16:23

If it’s chloramphenicol eye drops they need to be stored in the fridge before and after opening.

You're not being very compassionate to the Tesco staff either.
WonderfulYou · 08/01/2022 16:39

Did he not take the bottle to the till at the pharmacy?

It does sound like madness but if they’re not allowed to sell they can’t sell them.

Theunamedcat · 08/01/2022 16:42

The optrex ones can be sold at the checkout I bought some before Christmas the chemist said I've got none here check the shop shelves we put some out last week

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/01/2022 16:44

that is preposterous

GirlInACountrySong · 08/01/2022 17:14
