To think that some young people dress like they're oppressed?

I'm in my early 20s, and I've noticed some fashion trends among my peers which seem deliberately geared toward making the wearer look what I can only describe as oppressed. I'm only talking about my observations in student areas of London, so don't know if it's just here. For example, shaved heads; baggy clothes which make you look undernourished; workman boots and cropped trousers that make you look like you're in a prison camp in Siberia; boxy worker jackets; fisherman beanie hats... It's almost a dystopian look, or like they've emerged from a Soviet country, malnourished, pale, and worn out from heavy labour.

(FYI, I am no fashionista and I am not "judging" people who dress like this, just wanting to see if others have noticed it and what you think it's all about!).

I have bright red hair and give no fucks how out there anyone dresses. Infact I went out in a dress with trainers and a hoodie on for the school run. I don’t care Grin

Fraternaltwin · 07/01/2022 20:03

I’d rather look like that than a blow up doll.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/01/2022 20:03

Mullets were back last year. Not this year apparently though. Now it’s a ‘Wolf’ cut

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 07/01/2022 20:03

This sounds the opposite of oppressed- they sound liberated. And comfortable.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 07/01/2022 20:03

Gosh, OP - are you related to the OP of a current thread objecting to apparently ugly ‘middle class’ clothes?

Staggering amount of sartorial judgement going on tonight. Some sort of highly infectious virus?

Pedalpushers · 07/01/2022 20:05

I'm in my 30s and I bloody love cropped straight jeans and massive boots, with an oversized shacket of course. No beanie hat because I have a weird shaped head. It's comfy!

WindInTheWillows7 · 07/01/2022 20:05

@DJSteves

The idea of not subscribing to consumerism appears to have a hand in this look
Interesting.

But this is what’s fashionable as far as I’m awear. 90s inspired, a step on from the normcore trend, they’re all listening to 90s music too, which makes me feel old.

FelicityBeedle · 07/01/2022 20:06

A lot of the new trend is geared toward utilitarian looks, and part of that means they’re buying dickies and other ‘workwear’ brands. I think it’s great, less fast fashion which is what my generation is also being criticised for. Make your minds up

Christmascardsontheshelf · 07/01/2022 20:06

@Clarissa76

something like this maybe

Siberian prison camps must be a lot groovier than I imagined.

snort laughing here mate
gogohm · 07/01/2022 20:06

Ex East German army uniform was all the rage when I was at university, paired with doc martens generally if you were female (the ex army boots were not available in fours) alternatively lumberjack shirts and leggings, students always like to dress down

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2022 20:07

@pinkyredrose

Do Siberian prisoners wear cropped trousers?
Grin
Sparklesocks · 07/01/2022 20:07

Surely wearing whatever you like is the opposite of oppressed!
Trends come and go, they won’t all be for you. Tale as old as time.

students always like to dress down

Yep that is true

My son has a number one cut all over. He goes to the gym every day and it's easier to take care of. He also wears a beanie, because having almost no hair means it's cold when he's riding his bike. He wears baggy clothes when not working (in a posh mens clothing shop, so has to look smart) because it's comfortable. It doesn't mean anything.

Beamur · 07/01/2022 20:09

This is how my very clever DSS dresses. He's been in this vibe for quite a few years now. It's comfy, not consumerist - quite a lot is second hand. He does look quite dystopian 😁

allofthecheese · 07/01/2022 20:10

Oh I love this look. I'm all for boxy tops and cropped trousers.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/01/2022 20:11

I'm sure I read something that stated in times of economic uncertainty baggier clothes become more fashionable.

isittheholidaysyet · 07/01/2022 20:11

Sounds like the 90's are back.
Thank God, I might find some trousers to fit me again.
Must dig out my purple docs.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2022 20:12

I'm old.

It all looks fucking terrible to me.

Job done! Excellent work, youth of today. Carry on.

ghostyslovesheets · 07/01/2022 20:13

It's just fashion isn;t it? Nothing to understand - 1988 I lived in Docs, dungarees or 501's and a big check shirt - not very different.

Member589500 · 07/01/2022 20:13

My daughter and her mates shop ‘vintage’ and put together some brilliant ugly outfits. My daughter bought a giant pilly acrylic cardigan in burgundy with tartan collar and cuffs. I checked the brand inside and it’s Damart Grin

x2boys · 07/01/2022 20:14

It's just a style I spent most of the 90,s wearing My Docs with either long flowing skirts or short dresses ,you don't have to like the look or style.

Kanaloa · 07/01/2022 20:14

I like seeing people dressed in whatever they like. Mini skirts and long blonde extensions or a shaved head and ankle swingers. I think most people look great when they’re wearing stuff they really like.

I certainly think young people today look a lot better than I did at that age with my shiny shiny lipgloss and hair so flat I looked like Voldemort if I did a ponytail.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/01/2022 20:14

@freelions

Tbh I think the ones who are identikit perfectly groomed with lip fillers, scouse brows etc look more oppressed
