I’ve been giving the builders nespresso coffee and it’s grating on me and my pocket a bit! Is it super tight if go out and i buy them instant?

I love Aussie tradies, ask them if they want tea or coffee and they will tell you no thanks, they have brought everything they need 😁 I do bring out jugs of iced water in Summer though.

Chely · 08/01/2022 11:54

We always have some instant in and would give it from day 1 of work. I'm terrible for forgetting to offer workmen a brew at all.

They'll probably not be bothered if you get a nicer instant.

stingofthebutterfly · 08/01/2022 12:07

I think the vast majority of people drink instant coffee. Why on earth would it be tight, or is this a stealth boast?

mafted · 08/01/2022 12:08

I give nespresso or a cafetière to save time if there's a few of them. Our landscapers asked for instant. I asked what brand and went to the co-op, I haven't bought instant for years and was surprised to find it was almost £8 for a jar.

StripyHorse · 08/01/2022 12:45

I have never worked anywhere with anything other than instant in offer, either from a jar (or catering size tin) or crappy machine.
I WFH and unless I make myself a capuccino before starting, it is instant that gets me through the day.
So why wouldn't instant be ok?
(You may need to pretend you have run out of pods though).

ShipshapeShore · 08/01/2022 12:56

I think I must live on a different planet sometimes Grin.

This will blow your mind... my PILs have instant granules of TEA!

SenecaFallsRedux · 08/01/2022 13:28

@FruitMelange

I only drink instant coffee so that's what everybody else gets. I don't think instant coffee in the UK compares to some US brands. Some of them are grim.
I think it's all grim. I have had instant in hotel rooms in the UK; it was slightly less revolting than instant coffee in the US, but was still undrinkable, in my opinion. I fully admit to being a coffee snob.

It's a cultural difference. We are a nation of coffee drinkers. For example, hotels in the US have coffee makers in the rooms with ground coffee.

HairyScaryMonster · 08/01/2022 13:37

You can get that millicano stuff which is like posh instant. I'm sure they won't mind.

Wakemeuuuup · 08/01/2022 13:40

I only have instant at home so anyone looking for better coffee is out of luck

mrsnec · 08/01/2022 13:45

I'm having my house re-wired. Using the electrician my parents recommended.

He normally has Nespresso apparently. Wouldn't touch my Millicano but would 'make do' with Illy in a cafetiere.

When I offered him a cold drink DM was horrified I'd served the electrician with a 7up and offered to race to the shops for a Fever Tree!

Nanny0gg · 08/01/2022 13:49

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Nothing against builders I just don’t have the time! And I dislike being cast as the “little woman” bringing out tea and coffee as I’m doing my job too!
Why is offering refreshments casting you as the 'little woman'?
Hankunamatata · 08/01/2022 13:51

Funny we have builders next week and Im putting my nespresso machine and pods away. I only have a couple of cups a day and it's my treat. I can afford a sleeve of pods a day! Have brought neice microground costa instant.

Hankunamatata · 08/01/2022 13:54

And they will be getting it laid out on tray with biscuits etc. No serving. Tbh most tradesmen iv had in bring everything themselves.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 08/01/2022 13:56

@phishy

Omg what on earth are you doing giving them Nespresso
This ^^^
Purpleraspberry · 08/01/2022 15:17

@VelvetChairGirl

Well this is the definition of a middle class question isnt it, how odd.
Agree 100%! Hmm
JustLikea · 08/01/2022 15:19

I only use instant coffee for tradesmen which they're more than happy and grateful for

Hugoslavia · 08/01/2022 23:33

Yes you are being unreasonable. It's false economy. The price of good coffee is nothing compared to the cost of any building work and if your builders enjoy a nice cup of coffee, then they will hopefully work better for you.

phishy · 09/01/2022 04:36

Funny how builders work fine for men without being given coffee.

This expectation of women giving the builders a nice cup of coffee is so sexist.

Gechik · 09/01/2022 04:44

Those pod coffees aren't very nice anyway

sashh · 09/01/2022 05:08

@phishy

Omg what on earth are you doing giving them Nespresso
OMG what is anyone doing supporting Nestle?

I love a coffee, I have a tassimo so I can offer cappuccino etc as I don't normally have milk in the house.

For builders I would make a pot of filter coffee so it keeps warm and I'd buy in some milk. I also have a range of teas and a tea pot.

I also have a small fridge with cans of drink.

I blame it on my dad having a central heating company as a child. It pays to keep builders/installers/plumbers happy.

billysboy · 09/01/2022 08:41

Its absolutely fine Instant Coffee

As a builder with a few guys on , the sensible ones have a flask and their own lunch and begrudge going into Costa Lotti , a couple of them ( that are always the ones that are 5 mins late ) disappear for 45mins to go to the bakers etc , one moans about how little money he has got and its not hard to see how at £10 a day

As builders we never expect tea or coffee although its a nice gesture and would suggest a kettle and a few mugs etc is more than enough

Thatswhatmamasaid · 09/01/2022 13:07

The thing is they have been happily drinking your Nespresso, surely you can't take it away from them now? It would be a bit mean to start offering instant and it would only demotivate them.

Personally I would happily offer my builders my own coffee from my bean to cup espresso machine.

errnerrcallnernnernnern · 09/01/2022 13:32

Demotivate them 😂

MarshaBradyo · 09/01/2022 13:35

The last people we had brought their own

They weren’t the cheapest, did a great job and we rebooked them so I guess it all worked out well without need for coffee provided daily

fucketyfuckwit · 09/01/2022 13:43

I think this is the most middle class Mumsnet thread I have read in a while! 🤣
