To think so many middle-class clothes are ugly?

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

I personally think that Asda has gone down hill in recent years, I used to get all my clothes from there but their designs have really lost their edge. Sainsburys have upped their game though to take advantage, they have some really nice, and good quality, clothes. Even my sister, the label queen, is a convert due to it being the only place she could get any retail therapy during lockdown!

Alcemeg · 07/01/2022 19:40

Having met and loved these girls, I just find it hard to buy into Boden etc

As someone who's look could best be described as alternative, I wouldnt know what was on trend or not to be honest :o

Gwenhwyfar · 07/01/2022 19:41

@MaxNormal

So what are the good brands making all the beautiful clothes?

I'm going to stick my neck out and nominate Desigual but I'll probably get told it's awful and I'll deserve it too after my previous post Grin

Too many weird colours.
Diva66 · 07/01/2022 19:45

I am loving this thread Grin

Blossomtoes · 07/01/2022 19:45

Toast has never been "achingly on trend" or "the latest look".

Exactly. I have a grey and white cotton dress about to be worn for its seventh summer. It wasn’t on trend when I bought it and never will be. It’s still as immaculate as the day I bought it and it’s been worn a lot. Cost per wear is probably well under £1 now.

shinynewapple21 · 07/01/2022 19:46

@DillDanding

I’d love to buy clothes from Cos. But I think I’d need to be 5’10 rather than 5’7 and 9 stone rather than 10.

I do buy loads from Hush, Whistles, Mint Velvet and Me&Em. Had no idea I was middle class!

A bit disingenuous, eh? @DillDanding

georgarina · 07/01/2022 19:50

YANBU!

I hate those drab, shapeless, sometimes seemingly intentionally unflatteringly-cut clothes

Bollocks2Covid · 07/01/2022 19:52

I’ve never heard of ‘Cabbages and Roses’ but there stuff looks like something an extra from Downon Abbey would wear.

UglyModernWindows · 07/01/2022 19:52

I love Toast's denim pinafore dress, yet to buy it though as not sure if I'd get enough wear out of it. I just love the astethics though.

Ooo exciting! Off to look them up!
CaliforniaDrumming · 07/01/2022 19:57

Someone please buy this Baukjen dress on sale at halfprice. I think without the belt and ugly boots it would be lovely. www.baukjen.com/products/keilani-fsc-viscose-dress-stone

Handsnotwands · 07/01/2022 19:58

@Cornisharchitect

Wait what’s architecturally structured clothes? I’m an architect so I need to know Smile
You know, flying buttresses, fan vaulting , a shadow gap
Alcemeg · 07/01/2022 20:00

Why not this though?!

I promise I'm not on commission (I haven't spoken to these girls for over 5 years). but it astounds me how mainstream fashion manages to be SO. FUCKING. DULL. when people like this truly create 😍

My mum had a Jaeger dress like that in about 1975

Banana3627 · 07/01/2022 20:05

For people who like to show off their wealth and class, you sure like to dress like peasants.

Bitofachinwag · 07/01/2022 20:06

@catfunk

I think you're just as likely to find hideous clothes in primark or next.

Interested in the amount of comments about 'shapeless' or 'dowdy' .... should women only wear figure hugging bright things ?

That's what lots of people seem to think. Lots of comments here about what a shame it is for women with a " good" figure to " hide " it under shapeless clothes. Why ?
PyongyangKipperbang · 07/01/2022 20:07

Re: Architecturally Structured Clothes.....

I just read a joke in Billy Connolly's autobiography.

  • The woman over road opened the door in her night dress!
  • Really? Thats a funny place to have a door.
GettingStuffed · 07/01/2022 20:07

I own this from cos, it's very warm and comfortable and it's not totally shapeless www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.relaxed-fit-maxi-sweatshirt-dress-purple.1002877003.html

And I'm tempted by this www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.tailored-wrap-dress-orange.0986030002.html

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 20:07

@Alcemeg I do genuinely like those aesthetics, but they are wildly impractical for both the average figure and situation.
For a slim 20 year old goth on a night out, perfect though!

@onlychildhamster

Team frumpy here. *@RoyalFamilyFan*

I just ordered this: www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-gb/clothes/tunics/product-109557-black-m
Wearing without the patterned tights obviously, would team it with M & S black tights.

Favourite dress

Dh thinks i look pretty in this:
www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/nellie-jersey-dress/sty-j0875

This is great in winter:
www.monsoon.co.uk/jenna-balloon-sleeve-knitted-dress-in-recycled-polyester-8528507953.html

But i wear a strappy silk slip at home if its only me and DH...

Oh dear! I’d that frumpy? I woulfbt have thought so. Most of my wardrobe is like the first two dresses.
Cornisharchitect · 07/01/2022 20:08

@Handsnotwands I wish I had a friend IRL with your sense of humour 😂

Well...it would look really hideous on me. Maybe when I was 22 and slim and great skin had everything perky. Now, not so much!
PyongyangKipperbang · 07/01/2022 20:13

I think that there is a massive difference between figure hugging and flattering. I am short with an hourglass figure, loose clothes tend to hang from my shoulders so I cant wear those types of "shapeless" dresses as I look like a badly packed duvet, even though I am slim. My sister can wear them as she is taller, her shoulders arent as wide in comparison to the rest of her so she carries them off better.

Same as I cant wear loose tops with jeans for example as I just end up looking like an American footballer!
