To think so many middle-class clothes are ugly?

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

Oi! Don’t be so hard on art teachers! Mine wouldn’t have been seen dead in that, mind you he was a man….
But tbh I think so many clothes are ugly nowadays, no matter the prices.

Blossomtoes · 07/01/2022 18:38

If I'm going to spend more than about a tenner on anything to wear I want bright colours, shiny bits, weird trimmings etc

That’s a very niche way to dress. The thought of that makes me shudder. I want people to look at me, not my clothes.

anungratefulwretch · 07/01/2022 18:39

I cut my hair with kitchen scissors just yesterday and I have a penchant for mustard clothes / accessories. Clearly I am a Toast cliché from head to toe 🤣

What a lovely thread, which it seems has made at least one person cry. It's MN class obsession and judging of other women which is hideous and ugly, IMO.

If anyone is crying over this thread they need to work on their resilience.

@AngelinaFibres I live in Cornwall, I am Cornish. And I can confirm that the yellow Seasalt coat (that is also sold by Joules and Sainsburys) is not as popular as it’s marketed to be. Smile and doesn’t work when gale force wind and rain catch you out on the school run

Go naked?

@Alcemeg

To be fair, I don't think it's just posh clothes. This is on H&M

There must be a script somewhere in the fashion industry saying that we are cartoon characters...?!

But they also have literally EVERY other style of dress too. Prairie, shift, short sequin, flowing.
H&M aren’t any class really.
HepzibahGreen · 07/01/2022 18:44

In my experience very few men like a dungaree. I love a dungaree , practical, hard-wearing, comfortable but I would never have worn it to go on a date
You know, in my experience I have found the opposite! But then the cut has to be right with dungarees- you need the bib part to fit properly and be slightly curved in at the sides to avoid the telly tubby look..and wear something very fitted underneath.
I have had more play from blokes while wearing dungarees and a vest than in any cocktail dress Grin

Blossomtoes · 07/01/2022 18:45

God forbid @DrSbaitso! I meant my face!

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 18:45

Nothing unattractive about a makeup free face

I don't disagree, I'm often makeup free and my shoes are very sensible! I was just trying to describe the overall look.

So what are the good brands making all the beautiful clothes?

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 18:47

I'm going to stick my neck out and nominate Desigual but I'll probably get told it's awful and I'll deserve it too after my previous post Grin

@LalalalalalaLand123

I'd never heard of Cabbages & Roses before now. Have just looked at their website. What!? Who? Why??? How much??????? Shock
Nor had I. Just looked. Why are oversized, flowing dresses so popular in such a windy country? Anyone wearing one must have a constant fight to keep their knickers out of view.

A dungaree ( pretentious moi, apparently SmileSmile) and a vest is very sexy indeed on a young woman. I used to wear mine just like that. Sadly my arms and décolleté (oh more pretension) are no longer vest friendly . Enjoy your loveliness SmileSmile

From this thread I've learnt that Joe Biden is also a fashion designer.

Is he allowed a lucrative side hustle in his role?

One of my friends adores Desigual. She describes her look as overgrown toddler.

I voted the OP was NBU as your opinion is your opinion , just that , no reason needed. But some of the thread does show up how judgemental some people are. I loved the long loose style of dresses in the early '80s, like the dress from Cabbage and Roses. I had a black pinafore type dress slightly less full but very loose and a dark blue checked one with long sleeves. Both very comfortable, I never liked revealing clothes even when I had a slimmer hourglass figure. To add to my fashion sins I have just got some loose trousers and a top from the Seasalt sale. Oh and I followed up the Plumo link from MrsMadder Roseand loved a lot of their stuff - too small and too expensive for me though.

I grew up working class and the big difference I noted when i later met middle class people was their willingness if not enthusiasm for second hand clothes from shops or jumble sales. At that time (maybe now as well) second hand was unacceptable to the people I grew up with. My dad would not take 'charity' cast offs.

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 18:54

@Blossomtoes that's about my look too! I have a think for Lucy Locket Loves leggings, I must have twenty pairs.

MaxNormal · 07/01/2022 18:55

*thing not think.

CatOfTheLand · 07/01/2022 18:57

@RoyalFamilyFan

This dress! It might look okay on a three-year-old. Or a woman who is part of a Christian cult who has 19 children and bakes her own bread after hand milling the grains.
I stopped buying this sort of outfit when my 3-year-old saw a picture of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the mole women and asked if it was me and my friends
schoolsoutforever · 07/01/2022 18:58

My mum loves toast clothes but I’ve always thought they look really Amish, plain, fugly type things and, also, they’re very expensive. So I agree on that front. I also agree that they’re very middle class. Sometimes I think it’s like the Emperor’s new clothes. They’d probably sell more if they make them even more expensive. People say it’s for the fabrics, cut yadda but, I honestly believe that people buy this sort of thing because it sets them out as cultured. I’m fairly (lower) middle class myself but I just don’t want to look like a monk circa 1305.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 07/01/2022 18:58

I think I am probably middle class and I buy clothes that I like that are ethically made and classic. Wouldn’t dream of buying primark or high end one season fashion items due to the effects on the planet. Happy to spend £100 on a classic style jumper though that I will wear for 10 years. I find this reverse snobbery from people on MN just as bad as those who criticise people on benefits or the unemployed or those with large families. It’s getting boring now

NatriumChloride · 07/01/2022 18:59
@Isababybel 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Agree, it’s awful! Even the models look miserable being made to wear it!

You have absolutely no idea what’s going on in people’s lives - why write a post like your one at 18:40?
