To think so many middle-class clothes are ugly?

I admit I am hardly a style guru. But when I joined Mumsnet people talked about lots of companies I had never heard of like Toast. So I followed links of clothes posted and looked at the websites mentioned. And was shocked at how ugly so much of the clothing was.
Shapeless grey dresses. Black loose trousers teamed with black tunics which make the model look like she is a member of a cult. Shapeless brown t-shirts.
They are just so ugly. AIBU?

I'd never heard of Cabbages & Roses before now. Have just looked at their website. What!? Who? Why??? How much??????? Shock

Momicrone · 07/01/2022 17:20

So according to the ops logic, working class clothes are more colourful, figure hugging, and revealing?

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2022 17:20

So true. I’ve had two husbands and a LOT of sex while wearing said man repellent clothes!
Have you seen how many children those 'cult' women have? Grin

I would wear that toast dress Grin Music teacher Wink

I have had some excellent clothes from Asda over the years. Lovely cotton vintage looking jumper, cotton smock dress that has been washed a hundred times and a few other bits. Same with H&M they used to have great stuff and you could find quality.
It’s harder now to find quality clothes in the cheaper end of the High St, so I can see why people turn to Toast and Cos, as they do look.. sturdy.

Nothing will ever persuade me that my life could be improved by a tunic or a fairisle vest.

Oh don't tempt me ! I've just looked at their coats and skirts - so beautiful.

@anungratefulwretch

And always so much casual ageism on these threads.

'I don't like it therefore it must be being bought by grannies/old women/ women in their 60s'.

Fuck off with that shit.

This

I wonder what Toast think of this thread? And do they care? Wink
They probably have plants on here for the free publicity.
Cornisharchitect · 07/01/2022 17:29

I would pay extra for “sturdy” clothes with pockets though!

I think this thread has been quite nice tbh! Lots of lighthearted humour Smile and I’ve learnt a thing or two about the class system or target audiences

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 07/01/2022 17:31

Where does Uniqlo fall in the clothes class system? Asking for a friend. Grin

DrSbaitso · 07/01/2022 17:33

@JaneJeffer

I like man repellent clothes! Men are not so easy to repel no matter what you wear.
Try this.

Me.

I don't have anything from them as had forgotten about them but I will. Apart from the trousers, which I never wear, there's nothing on that site I wouldn't wear.

They also meet my requirement of being natural fabrics and made in the UK. That's a big part of "why?"

Ooh, see my kneejerk reaction was that Uniqlo is middle class...

....but that's purely because the only one I've ever been in was in Kensington (fancy) and I'm common as muck so I assumed it wasn't for people like me haha!

But actually, their basics are excellent and really cheap!

JaneJeffer · 07/01/2022 17:37

@DrSbaitso Grin that might do the job

Parker231 · 07/01/2022 17:37

What determines clothes being MC?

Don’t think I’ve ever shopped at Toast - definitely not appropriate for work and not how I dress outside work. Prefer fitted styles and with more shape and styling than their clothes.

Mimilamore · 07/01/2022 17:37

Can I just mention boiled wool... what is that about and off topic a bit, making a lovely spread and then not eating it!!

AngelinaFibres · 07/01/2022 17:38

@Cornisharchitect

I wonder if Seasalt will see this thread? I’m sure they assume all Cornish people love their brand but we don’t!

We really really don’t!

Smile

I love Seasalt fabrics. Their velvet fabric is beautiful. I have one of their yellow coats with the stripey lining and I wear it when I go to the seaside.So do 6 million other people. It's the seaside uniform . ALL their other clothes look awful on me. I give off a vicars wife at the summer fete vibe . No offence to vicars wives and I love a summer fete but I just can't carry any of their stuff off.
housemaus · 07/01/2022 17:38

Someone posted Clothkits upthread - can someone explain why all of these clothes look like they'd rustle/crinkle if you touched them...?

@RoyalFamilyFan

This dress! It might look okay on a three-year-old. Or a woman who is part of a Christian cult who has 19 children and bakes her own bread after hand milling the grains.
I'm with ya!

I’d say not MC. Aspirational working mostly.

Because it’s largely not nice natural fibres with any U.K. connection (even that’s a cheeky chappy MD from Somerset whose used the family wealth to buy a factory in India and set up a “British” company).
