How many bedrooms is reasonable for a UK holiday rental for 4 families?

…including 6 children across 3 of the families and 2 dogs (I hate dogs but that’s another thread) - children’s ages range from 18 months to 9 years and they are 3 girls and 3 boys. The adults are 4 couples.

Bedroom per couple x 4 Bedroom per set of siblings x 3
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/01/2022 22:28

I think 7

One each for adults and one per pair of children

Make sure each child has an actual bed of their own, whatever you decide bedrooms wise, as otherwise it’ll be a nightmare with kids up and down, not sleeping, sleeping poorly and being tired. Nothing more important on a holiday than properly sufficient beds imp

@IWannaGoToTheSpa

Sorry I should say kids relationships: Family one: boy aged 9 (only child) Family two: boy 9, girl 7, boy 5 Family three: girl 5, girl 18 month They’re cousins. These are the ages they will be when holiday is due. 18 month old could still be waking in the night I guess. There’s actually 4 bathrooms. Three doubles with en-suite Two other rooms have three single beds each.
This is 5 rooms?
GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/01/2022 22:30

So you haven’t got enough rooms? By that reckoning, one couple doesn’t have a bedroom!

SmallElephant · 06/01/2022 22:30

So only 5 rooms? That's not enough?

Chatwin · 06/01/2022 22:30

We always do 1 room per couple and 1 room per set of siblings. With cousins we find the kids like a bit of space to retreat to when spending all day together.

Divide the cost by number of rooms used per family.

Kshhuxnxk · 06/01/2022 22:32

Exactly what they have at home.

LagunaBubbles · 06/01/2022 22:34

You've not been clear about mumber of bedrooms?

DownWhichOfLate · 06/01/2022 22:34

That’s not even enough beds!

rookiemere · 06/01/2022 22:34

So 13 people and 12 beds , although presumably 18 month old is in cot bed. How long is this for ?

IWannaGoToTheSpa · 06/01/2022 22:36

So a family member has booked 5 bedroom house without consulting anyone and has a very relaxed attitude to life, whatever, it’ll be fine blah blah blah. I’m not high maintenance but I’d j so to be dreading everyone bunking in. We’re not obliged to go. But have rejected the last couple of family holiday offers for various reasons and feel bad rejecting again. Plus they’ll say well our kids can sleep on blow up beds. Which will make us feel really uncomfortable. Just feel it puts us (my husband really, his family) in an awkward position - everyone else will be fine with it as they are the sort of family where you can’t make a fuss or say anything is a problem - but I know I’ll Ave a miserable week.

Whereabouts is it? Find something just for your bit of the family nearby?

furballfun · 06/01/2022 22:37

Really depends for how long - we did 4 families (but only 3 children) in 4 rooms (one per family) but that was a long weekend, and we were lucky with the weather.

Any longer, and we'd have needed more space, it was actually the living space that was tight rather than the bedrooms.

silverpinecones · 06/01/2022 22:38

Surely it would be:
3 x couples in en suite rooms
1 room of the 3 boys
1 room of the 3 girls

But also maybe an extra sleeping space for the 18 month old in her parents room?

This seems enough to me, as long as the cousins will actually sleep. My daughter and her cousins are always too excited to sleep in the same room but they are a bit younger (6 and two 4 year olds)

Have I read it right?

IWannaGoToTheSpa · 06/01/2022 22:38

@rookiemere A week!

IWannaGoToTheSpa · 06/01/2022 22:39

@silverpinecones there’s four adult couples plus the six kids

OP posts:
rookiemere · 06/01/2022 22:39

Which family are you and how good is/are your DCs at sleeping in same room as their cousins?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2022 22:39

@silverpinecones you've missed the 4th couple without children

SpacePotato · 06/01/2022 22:40

Can you just book a dog free hotel or something nearby so you are there but not stuck living with them?

SlipperyLizard · 06/01/2022 22:40

My DHs family are similar - happy to crowd into accommodation that is (for me) too small. Thankfully they aren’t the type of people to get insulted if we decline!

MyGreenTutu · 06/01/2022 22:43

Alll the adult couples will want a room each, so that's four. For the kids, it depends on how well they know and like each other, what their ages / sexes are and what their routines are like. Eg eg my two kids would have preferred to share with each other and no-one else (would have made for much calmer bedtimes too, at a time to suit us) but I know when I was small I would much rather have shared with my big girl cousin than my baby brother.

No quite, there is a fourth couple with no kids on top of this.
IWannaGoToTheSpa · 06/01/2022 22:45

@SpacePotato this is genius!!!

How many people does the house actually sleep? A lot of holiday home owners won't accept extra beds. They have their insurance organised for a maximum number of people based on safety as well as a wear and tear calculation / water consumption etc.
Plus it's a house for nine and they are 12 of you there might not be enough seats, crockery etc!
