To ask what can I nibble on?

I've given up sugar. For health reasons, but the weight loss was an added bonus!

However ... what can I eat at my desk? I used to munch my way through chocolate and biscuits but have replaced those with bread sticks and dry crackers. I've been told they are just sugar in another form but I'm not sure what to swap it for. I've tried fruit but it's just not filling enough. I'm veggie too which probably doesn't help!

My office hours are erratic and involve very early mornings which is when I'm most hungry, even with a big breakfast.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Oatcakes, cheese chunks, baby plum tomatoes, pickled onions, olives, nuts, veg sticks (with dip if you want), avocado, Greek yoghurt (full fat tastes so nice you don't even need honey, it's the low fat that makes it need sweetening if that makes sense!)

You could make some protein balls or bites, or sugar free flapjacks or brownies. I'm a big fan of scones and savoury muffins too. Or eggs, egg cups, meat slices, smoked salmon. I like my smoked salmon on crackers with cream cheese, it helps balance out the carb 'hit' of the cracker. I always go for wholegrain everything, and no fat reduced or fat free. So much more satisfying you might find you don't get hungry so often.

Sorry didn't realise you are veggie!

I love celery 'boats' filled with nut butter for a low sugar protein boost. You could do it with hummus otherwise

Surely the answer is a bigger breakfast or a 2-part breakfast if you’re up really early and then need to eat again in the morning.

So porridge at 6am, then a cheese sandwich at 9am?

Or scrambled eggs and toast at 6am then a savoury muffin at 9am?

Then lunch.

Random snacks aren’t the issue, you need to look at how & what you eat overall.

Some great ideas on here – but lots of repetition…!

One thing not mentioned so far though; you asked about brown bread…
I strongly recommend trying Ryebread. The very heavy, dark brown German kind - rectangular slices, not the ‘fancy/bloomer’ kind.
It is very tasty (although may be an acquired taste) and very filling, use it with all the toppings that you would put on crackers but it is quiet to eat

Apple slices spread with nut butter absolutely delicious

bloomingcovid · 07/01/2022 12:20

Apple and nut butter? That's certainly one to try. Thanks @Crispynoodle

@AnonyMum21 I've never tried rye bread. Is it less 'sugary' than normal white bread? Might give that a go

I think you're right all of you who mentioned a bigger breakfast (or be like a hobbit and have two!). Also the idea of full fat rather than low fat. Healthy living is the aim rather than weight loss

Do you mean pumpernickel @AnonyMum21?

Stuck to stuff that’s as unprocessed as possible then and you won’t go far wrong. Definitely no low fat anything.
AnonyMum21 · 07/01/2022 20:06

@RampantIvy - not quite the same as pumpernickel but yes, very similar. Rye bread tends to be more widely available in standard supermarkets (although often only 1, sometimes 2 brands)

@bloomingcovid - it is a very ‘dense’ thick bread (hence me saying earlier it might be an acquired taste- I’ve been eating it for 20 years). I know it has low sugar but I’ve never compared it to other breads…
Reason I suggested it - it is VERY high fibre, approx 9g /per 100g vs approx 3.5-4g fibre in white bread and 5-6.5g in brown/granary loaves. Fibre is very filling, will keep you feeling satisfied for longer and obviously good for digestive system too.
I think it’s delicious- especially with pate & mayo & crispy onions (common topping in Scandinavia), but also with cream & other cheeses, beetroot, salad incl onions, gherkins, mackerel in tomato sauce etc… all usually just on top of one slice (ie/ open-face not traditional sandwich).
Hope you enjoy it!

I’m attaching photo of the most common brand in ‘normal’ UK supermarkets … I usually get it in Asda or Tesco. Other fancy brands are available in deli or health food shops

More info on the Rye bread

Link to recipe on Tesco website-
realfood.tesco.com/recipes/danish-open-faced-rye-sandwich.html

Schneider Brot - 10 slices/ 500g = in Waitrose for 89p (online) and interestingly in Tesco for £1.10
Same brand - 7slices/500g - but includes sunflower seeds = in Asda for £1.58
Let me know if you try it?

All enthusiastic about rye bread /Danish sandwiches now …
and forgot to tell you about smoked salmon, mayo & cucumber - great topping (but obvs not veggie, sorry OP) and also top tip for all - eat with knife & fork!

Don’t mean to hijack the thread, but this bread is very under-rated in UK - I’d love to see more people try it

Pork scratchings/puffs

Snaffling Pig do an AMAZING array. Perfect for those on a low sugar diet.

Also, a couple of squares of very dark chocolate.
Hartley sugar free jelly.
Nuts.
Mini cocktail sausages....
