I've given up sugar. For health reasons, but the weight loss was an added bonus!

However ... what can I eat at my desk? I used to munch my way through chocolate and biscuits but have replaced those with bread sticks and dry crackers. I've been told they are just sugar in another form but I'm not sure what to swap it for. I've tried fruit but it's just not filling enough. I'm veggie too which probably doesn't help!

My office hours are erratic and involve very early mornings which is when I'm most hungry, even with a big breakfast.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Long time veggie low carber here and I try to avoid overly processed food. I have:

small amounts of crunchy almond butter with celery (or just on a spoon)
Small handful of mixed nuts with some very dark chocolate (85%+)
Full fat Greek yogurt
Cubes of cheese, cucumber, celery
Full fat Philadelphia or hummus with celery, raw cauliflower, broccoli
Hard boiled eggs with good Mayo
Cold cheese and mushroom omelette/veggie egg muffins.
Almond flour “bread” toasted with butter and marmite
Interesting fruit teas

WouldIBeATwat · 06/01/2022 18:17

@Chely

Try not eating, grazing can cause insulin resistance too.
True. I do 16:8- 20:4 and am hungrier on some days than others.
JasmineGarden · 06/01/2022 18:21

Olives
Cheese
Almonds
Total adage Greek Yogurt
Eggs (though your colleagues might not be happy)
Celery with peanut butter
Cucumber with hummus
Cauldron (vegetarian) sausages WELL cooked cold.

Bread/breadsticks/crackers etc & fruit, are just sugar as soon as they hit your system.

How are so many people eating peanut butter at work?? I’ve never been allowed nuts at work in case of severe allergies. I thought that was commonplace?

I love olives or rice cakes topped with avocado and tomatoes.

KittenCatcher · 06/01/2022 18:23

Peanut butter and nuts could be a no no, they are banned in places because of allergies.

I've worked full-time for more than 25 years in various offices and never come across a nut veto.

I assume there'd have to be one if a severely allergic person worked there but a ban 'just in case' seems pointless - by the time they get to working age, people will know if they have a severe nut allergy.

gobbledygoook · 06/01/2022 18:27
  • Peanut butter on celery with raisins! (Never been around a peanut ban in any office I've been in)
  • Crispy tofu chunks with sweet chilli sauce
  • Veggies and dip
  • Homemade kale crisps
  • raisins
  • dates (pitted) with nut butter / biscoff
  • ritz crackers and salsa (weird but really good)
  • cheese cubes (cathedral city do great cheese snacking things!)
  • roasted broad beans, lower calorie than nuts

So many snacks 😂

Mumteedum · 06/01/2022 18:36

It's good if you can check before having nuts in a shared office. Speaking as someone with anaphylaxis who has the posters up at work and tries to remember to tell people but I've had a few incidents over the years.

I can't be in the room with peanut butter

Mumteedum · 06/01/2022 18:38

A tip I had from a fatburner diet book was to eat seeds with an apple or pear as it's more filling and makes the sugars release more slowly...or something like that. Quite nice, sunflower seeds and apple.

Raisins = nature’s wine gums. The OP is avoiding sugar.
WouldIBeATwat · 06/01/2022 18:49

Seriously. She doesn’t want sugar. Raisins, biscoff, dates, sweet chilli sauce and crackers are all basically sugar!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/01/2022 18:53

Diced celery

TheCloudsHavePassed · 06/01/2022 18:54

😂 I was just giving ideas based on what I have! They can be adapted e.g no sugar added pure nut butter or even just give the OP / PPs ideas.

Most foods have sugar / carbohydrates in 🤷🏻‍♀️ even fruits and veggies!

WouldIBeATwat · 06/01/2022 19:00

Most of what I eat only has trace levels. I generally get between 20-30g carbs a day.

Mainly by avoiding most of the things you listed.

Belledan1 · 06/01/2022 19:02

Seafood sticks but could be another smelly one lol. Bits ham.or chicken etc too.

BrieAndChilli · 06/01/2022 19:02

Roast kale in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and then sprinkle with salt. Surprisingly yummy and I don’t like kale otherwise!

Roasted chickepeas

I had some chedder cheesiest as a sample packed they are just little balls of realty baked cheese so like popcorn. We’re very nice but I’ve googled and they are about £1.25 a pack which is a bit steep I think compared to buying a multi pack of popcorn/crisps for £1 for 6!

Blueberries aren’t too bad a fruit.

DD is a veggie and she likes veggie jerky

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/01/2022 19:16

Tinned peas (cold) with tomato ketchup or
brown sauce,
Tinned sweetcorn (cold) with mayo.
(Honestly, although co-workers may think you're odd, mine do!)
It's filling and a lot of fibre, and not much washing up.

Matbest · 06/01/2022 19:18

Mini babybels, crab sticks, hard boiled eggs, sugarsnap peas, carrot sticks and houmous.

WonderfulYou · 06/01/2022 19:33

If it’s purely for grazing/snacking I would recommend popcorn - you can get microwaveable packets and they’re only about 130kcals for a big packet.

If you’re hungry and you want something filling then anything with protein and veg. e.g. peanut butter and celery or chicken pieces and veg

AlternativePerspective · 06/01/2022 19:52

Drink water.

Seriously if you’re trying to lose weight one of the best ways to fail at it is to constantly snack.

While you’re constantly snacking the body is burning the food you’re eating and not the reserves you’re trying to get rid of.

I get the need to snack sometimes, but eating constantly between meals is a sure sign that you’re missing something in your main diet such as protein.

How about something like porridge and eggs (not together obviously,) for breakfast, then get a water bottle and drink from that throughout the day.

While you’re constantly eating your body thinks it’s constantly hungry because it’s developed the habit of receiving food on a constant basis.

Replace that with water, and eat meals with more proteine.

YukoandHiro · 06/01/2022 19:53

Nuts, pieces of cooked chicken or other cold meats, breadsticks or Pom bears dipped in cream cheese, babybels

Hotyogahotchoc · 06/01/2022 19:54

Raisins
Dried fruit and nut mix (tastes more sweet than savoury if not salted)
Fruit - chop up apple and take it, grapes, tangerines
Rice crackers
Cheese
