AIBU to not understand why children have to wear masks all day in school, yet adults can drink & dance in crowded nightclubs whilst not wearing masks?

I'm finding it increasingly hard to support the rules when they don't make sense-my children are old enough to ask questions and this one I have no answer for. Yes we want to keep teachers & children safe but the double standards just seem illogical. Anyone know what the rules are in lap dancing clubs?

Dunno, but they aren't open in Scotland

OmgIThinkILikeYou · 06/01/2022 12:44

Don't you have to be 2* vaccinated ot have a neg test to go into a nightclub? No idea for laptop dancers but would assume the same.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 06/01/2022 12:45

It's mad isn't it. I was watching the darts earlier in the week and thinking the same

Our LEA also has rules for household isolation for 5 days. So if say, DH is positive I can go to work, the pub etc but DC can't go to school for 5 days 🤷‍♀️

HermioneGrangersHair · 06/01/2022 12:46

I’ve written to my (Conservative) MP and asked that exact question ditto libraries (- not the Lap dance club bit!) - funnily I haven’t had a reply ! Maybe more people should ask their MP?

Siepie · 06/01/2022 12:52

I don't particularly agree with the policy, but I assume the logic is:

-You need a covid pass to get into a nightclub, but not into a school.

-Clubbing is optional. People who are CV or worried about catching covid can choose not to go clubbing, but children can't choose not to go to school.

NuffSaidSam · 06/01/2022 12:54

I think the optional v compulsory issue is key.

If you are vulnerable or worried you can avoid nightclubs very easily.

If you are a vulnerable or anxious school child or teacher or other school staff it's going to be much more difficult to just not go to school.

girlmom21 · 06/01/2022 13:00

It'd because we don't want to close schools but doesn't matter if some adults have time off work. It's that simple.

Boood · 06/01/2022 13:00

I haven’t seen any data on this recently, but last summer they were tracking the source of infections quite closely across different sectors and I’m sure they still are. Schools have been known for a while to be one of the biggest sources, mainly because children aren’t vaccinated. If nightclubs, on the other hand, are not significant, it’s a perfectly logical decision.

Elieza · 06/01/2022 13:00

If they shut pubs and nightclubs etc they have to pay furlough to the staff and give their employers financial assistance.

There is no money in the coffers.

Hence they try and keep everything open even though it seems like utter madness to me.

Elieza · 06/01/2022 13:01

Oh and they can’t shut schools as adults can’t get out to work and they’d need furlough again too…

LittleGwyneth · 06/01/2022 13:04

Because adults are vaccinated, and have to be vaccinated to get into a club. And if you don't want to take the risk and go clubbing, you don't have to. Schools aren't optional, teachers can't just skip work, so all measures have to be taken. If and when children are all fully vaccinated I would things will probably change.

Also bars and clubs contribute to the economy and schools don't, so there's more impetus to keep them open for that reason too.

Schools are hotbeds for transmissions in ways that other places just aren't. It's not unfair, it's pragmatic.

wonderstuff · 06/01/2022 13:06

People can choose whether to go to a nightclub, kids have to go to school, the nature of schools is quite unique in that people are sat in very close quarters for extended periods of time, and it’s really important that schools are kept open. If Covid spreads to everyone in a nightclub then the club might have to close, no big deal though. If schools close it has huge implications, not just for the students but the wider community as well.

The scandal is that 2 years in we still aren’t properly ventilating classes and don’t have filters that would help available.

I absolutely hate teaching kids in masks, but schools are different to other places where lots of people gather and we need to do everything possible to keep them open.

RememberThePenguins · 06/01/2022 13:06

It needs to be a blanket approach. I don't have to wear a mask at work.

Either everyone wears one indoors or no one does outside of health care settings.

Plus, the idea that cloth masks are any use when worn incorrectly by teenagers is nothing but health security theatre. Needs to be surgical or FFP2/3 to be any use. Even the isage muppets have caught onto that one.

Justmebeingme245 · 06/01/2022 13:06

Gym is the same - no need for a mask and vaccination status not checked. Seems crazy to me! I was at the gym earlier today and it was packed.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 06/01/2022 13:07

The government can't afford to close everything again and boris can't get it past his revolting, rebellious back benchers

Lacedwithgrace · 06/01/2022 13:08

Why do people get to choose to not wear masks in shops and essential places when people are still shielding? None of it makes sense

Beautiful3 · 06/01/2022 13:09

Yep, crazy!!!

Grumpyosaurus · 06/01/2022 13:12

Most adults are vaccinated, most DC aren't. In a class of 31 at the school were I work, which I'm with at the moment, 4 are off either with Covid or awaiting PCRs.

The classrooms are freezing and honestly, another winter like this and I'm out: constantly cold and constantly at risk of infection.

MorningStarling · 06/01/2022 13:15

Going to a restaurant or nightclub is a choice. People know that there will be those who aren't wearing masks and (like me) choose not to visit them. School isn't optional, children are forced to attend, therefore it makes sense to enforce mask wearing there because they have no option to stay away.

Personally I'd like to see mask wearing enforced everywhere, including in pubs/stadiums/concerts. Hell, I'd like a three month lockdown. But masks in schools? No question, they should have them.

trollopolis · 06/01/2022 13:34

Nobody has to be in ackub.

But DC, no matter how vulnerable they or their parents/siblings might be, need to be in school. Therefore we need to reduce risks in schools. Even if a measure isn't perfect, it's still worthwhile

Rupertpenrysmistress · 06/01/2022 13:38

My DC school also still isolate for 10 days as, they are worried about the risk to vulnerable teachers and children, seems reasonable but as usual not much attempt by the government to mitigate risk in school.

Wisewordswouldhelp · 06/01/2022 13:40

Having seen how the kids (and to be honest the adults) around here treat their masks i doubt masks are very effective anyway. Masks shoved in bags, left on desks, picked up off the floor and then worn, rarely washed (I'm sure some people never wash them), they must be bacteria and virus laden 🤢

RememberThePenguins · 06/01/2022 13:42

I have to be in work, that's not optional. I don't have to wear a mask there.

So the optional argument doesn't wash. I said earlier, either we make it a blanket rule or no one outside of health care settings should be made to wear them.

This half and half nonsense is just that. Nonsense.

millymolls · 06/01/2022 13:46

Completely disagree that masks should be worn on schools
Totally ineffective
And anyone who is vulnerable has choice to be vaccinated.
But to your question it’s just virtue signalling politics. Simple.

millymolls · 06/01/2022 13:48

And vaccinating kids does not prevent transmission and doesn’t protect teachers. So need to remain 100% persons choice
