To ask for child friendly soup recipes?

shamelessly posting for traffic I'm afraid...
I want to eat soup in winter and it would be really useful on night when 2 different kids have 2 different back to back clubs if I could have it ready in the slow cooker when we finally get home.
The only soup my kids have liked so far is a blended root veg soup (carrot, potato, swede, butternut all blended up) but we are all a bit sick of it tbh.
So please share child friendly soup ideas with me?
Neither child will eat unblended onions.
It also can't have mushrooms, leeks, celery, cauliflower or broccoli because one or both will refuse those.

Does anyone have any tried and tested kids favourites?

@ThinWomansBrain

If the soup is blended to smooth, will they know exactly what's in it? (assuming it's preference rather than an allergy?) The recipe above doesn;t include blending to smooth, but I blitz it with my stick blender anyway.
It depends. Cauli and brocoli they'd probably eat blended. Onions they will as long as it doesn't taste onioney eg one onion in a pot of soup. I suspect they wouldn't eat blended leek soup as it will taste pretty much of leek.

The only soup my kids eat without complaints is this one:

I usually add some dried basil too

Nana’s magic soup from Tesco website.

My kids absolutely love pea soup and the best part is, it only takes a minute to make!

A bag of peas, stock (pot or cube) to cover, boil for a couple of mins, add a small bunch of fresh mint and basil (or dried if no fresh), blend. Delicious, quick and less than 50p to feed the whole family!

Defender90 · 06/01/2022 13:08

I make this soup at least once a week, it blends really well and it's filling.

The red pepper really makes it tastier than my usual lentil soup (which now gets glum looks when they find out it's 'the old lentil' we're having Grin

Chicken noodle soup. My kids love this. Takes time but not expensive or faffy.

RosettaPebble · 06/01/2022 14:27

Carrot and ginger soup was always a favourite with my dc. Lovely in the winter.

This is a nice slow cooker one, it has cauliflower but blended, great for toppings (bacon, potato chips, chives, sour cream)

Jack Monroe recipe for spinach, lentil & lemon soup - mine and my friends’ children all love this.
Add sweet potatoes to any soup, makes it very creamy/comforting.
Scotch Broth
Chicken, cabbage and rice soup is a neat-eater’s family favourite.

LuckyKitty13 · 09/01/2022 06:27

Just wanted to add support for red lentil soup! I make it every week and my 2 yo loves it. Has to have lentil carrot and tomato, and then whatever veg is in the fridge (usually try to add some green like springs greens or kale - once blended as long as it’s orange then no one notices). Plenty of garlic and herbs depending on what’s available- this week I’ve used cumin and coriander and it’s delicious

@Anxietyandwine

Mine are obsessed with chicken and sweetcorn soup.

Make a stock with the carcass next time you have a roast chicken and stick it in the freezer. Then when you’re making it add onion, celery, carrot, parsnips and just about any other veg you’ve got in the fridge that needs using. Simmer/slow cook for as long as you can, then add half the leftover chicken, blend it all up. Then add the rest of the chicken, as much sweetcorn as you like and double cream right at the end.

You’ve made me want soup now Grin

The OP gave a list of veg the children don't eat, one is celery.

I hate celery and I can taste it in soup, even in tiny quantities.

OP Are you looking for traditional hearty soups or will Asian broths and thin sups be OK?

My basic Asian stock is a cube of frozen ginger, a cube of frozen garlic and a stock cube.

I thin add to it, so it can have veg, chicken or other meats. Different spices and soy sauce.

You can serve it with rice or with noodles in the soup.

I do 'ham shank and peas' but ham shanks are getting rarer to find.

You need a shank and dried peas.

Soak the peas overnight, in the morning put the shank and peas in the slow cooker and add a kettle or two of water (depending on the slow cooker).

Hen you get home take the shank out with tongs, remove the fat and put back into the soup. Serve with crusty bread.

It gets better the longer it cooks and you can top it up with water and keep cooking. I have been known to do this over 24 hours.

I love this one in winter (came from internet but have lost link and have it saved to phone notes) also have a look at Corn Chowder recipes (mine is in a book I inherited from my grandmother so no internet link either)

130g beetroot
100g sweet potato
150 large carrots
450ml vegetable stock
1/2 white onion
2 cloves garlic
Black pepper to taste
Olive oil

Method:

Preheat your oven to 190c.

Peel and chop all of your veggies into chunks and pop these onto a roasting tray with a little drizzle of
olive oil. Toss everything together until evenly coated and then place these into the oven to roast for
around 35 minutes.

You want the veggies to soft and caramelised.

Meanwhile, finely dice your onion and sauté this in a pan over medium heat. You can use a little olive
oil or cooking spray for this. Crush in the garlic clove and continue to cook until the onion is translucent.
Once your veggies are cooked, in a blender, combine the onions & garlic, roasted veggies and your
stock and blend until smooth.

Covent Garden fresh chicken soup

My two adore it

Whatayear81 · 09/01/2022 07:37

And none of the effort above!

Sleepyteach · 09/01/2022 07:57

This is a bit hit in our house: realfood.tesco.com/recipes/nanas-magic-soup.html

I’ve made this before, and added bacon: recipes.sainsburys.co.uk/recipes/chicken-and-sweetcorn-chowder

unyummy4amummy · 09/01/2022 22:08

One of my kids "hates carrots" but loves this carrot soup!. Roughly chop 1 medium onion and fry in a little oil until translucent. Add 600g roughly chopped peeled carrots and cook for 2 mins. Add around 2 pints stock (1 use 2 pints of water with 2 stock cubes) and 3 heaped teaspoons coriander powder. Cook for 20 mins or so until carrots are soft. Add 2 tins of chickpeas or white kidney or butter beans and blitz until smooth. You can leave chunky bits but the 'carrot hater' will reject "bits". Quick and easy

unyummy4amummy · 09/01/2022 22:10

forgot to say drain the chickpeas or beans first!

GettingStuffed · 09/01/2022 22:19

Roast pepper and tomato

minipie · 09/01/2022 22:48

Mine are fairly fussy (sigh) and the soups they like are:

  • leek and potato or leek and butterbean, with cream and bits of bacon on top. They don’t like leeks but will eat this.
  • Tomato soup
  • Roast parsnip soup (not their favourite but it goes down)
  • Carrot and red lentil
  • Spinach soup (to my surprise)
  • Pea soup - a real winner with the dc and very easy
JanglyBeads · 09/01/2022 22:51

Oo good thread lots of new recipes to try, soups are one of the few healthy meals my two will both eat!
I do a tomato and lentil, and a courgette, lentil and turmeric.

Also one of them likes carrot and coriander.

Tinysnickers · 27/01/2022 14:24

Update for kind contributors.
Test 1 was nanas magic soup. DH and I liked it but both kids said yuck Angry

Test 2 was minestrone. DH and I really enjoyed it, kids just about tolerated it. I don't think they'd go for it again. The quest continues!!
