To think my heated throw is too expensive to run?

I bought a heated throw at the beginning of November and my electric consumption seems to have gone up from about 4.5kwh/day on average to around 7kwh/day. This is based on actual meter readings.

I know electric consumption is higher generally in the winter, but mine has always been quite consistent since I've been working from home. I haven't got any other new electrical items or changed any other habits.

I thought they were economical to run and I'm gutted Sad Has anyone else noticed this?

Can't remember how to do a proper link, sorry!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 05/01/2022 23:59

@Biscuitsandgravyagain

Please can you post a link to the throw you have that gets really hot if you put it on high? A lot of the ones I've seen have reviews that say they don't get very hot, but I'd love one so I'm snuggly when working from home.
I have a dreamland one and it gets hot. Mine is an old version but similar https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7074572

To get anywhere near the extra 3k reading would be more like an immersion heater. To use a throw of that heat would be like wrapping yourself in 3 one bar electric fires.......rather warm

@MargotMoon thank you

We have 2 heated throws. The one linked to by @ JockTamsonsBairns which has a lovely luxourious look to it because it's faux fur and one from QVC which was their TSV recently. QVC gave the running costs as 13p for 9 hours use per day and £4 for one months use.

HairyScaryMonster · 06/01/2022 09:24

For perspective as a family of 4 with gas and electric we're spending over £5 a day. With the darker evenings you might have lights on more etc. Small things can make up that 50p

JustJustWhy · 06/01/2022 19:31

@JasmineGarden

I don't understand why anyone, let alone someone so obsessed about 40p per day increase in costs to use something they love, has their central heating on at night?? Mine stays on 5° to protect the pipes, I can't stand it being on any higher.

A smart meter will drive you nuts.

Mine doesn't.

I've got this one. Quite pricey, but it's brilliant - really warm and cosy, with a good weight to it.
I bought my Ds a cheaper one, around half that price, but it feels cheap and flimsy. Should have stuck with what I know.[/quote]
I've got that one too, but find it very heavy and obstructive. I bought a thinner one which I prefer as it more easily wraps around me, especially when WFH at a desk.

Both are lovely though, highly recommended!

Newbie0001 · 11/01/2024 15:57

Can anyone recommend a throw that’s cheap to run?

GasPanic · 11/01/2024 16:17

Most of them are around 150W to run max, or 0.15 of a kWh per hour. If you pay 30p per kWh then that is around 4.5p per hour, or £1 per day, compared with gas CH which is usually about £1-£2 per hour (obviously more if you have a massive house).

There isn't really such thing as cheap to run. Nearly all the electricity that they use up is put out as heat. If you want to run it cheaper the only real way is to turn down the power setting.

Turning the heating off altogether overnight when you are in bed would probably make a noticeable difference to gas costs.

This. We never have heating on overnight unless its two or three degrees below zero and we live in a single glazed house with a downstairs bathroom! Heating costs less than £100 a month in a three-bed-and study two recep house.

Lucky.

Just checked ours it's £11 a day Hmm

Edited

Scrap that, our total power DD is under £100 pcm...
