To think my heated throw is too expensive to run?

MargotMoon · 05/01/2022 21:57

I bought a heated throw at the beginning of November and my electric consumption seems to have gone up from about 4.5kwh/day on average to around 7kwh/day. This is based on actual meter readings.

I know electric consumption is higher generally in the winter, but mine has always been quite consistent since I've been working from home. I haven't got any other new electrical items or changed any other habits.

I thought they were economical to run and I'm gutted Sad Has anyone else noticed this?

Op, it’s in the region of 12 pounds a month, is this a real struggle for you? If it’s providing you comfort?

ditalini · 05/01/2022 22:33

Are you honestly saving less than 40p per day working from home op?

I take a packed lunch to work, make my own coffee etc but my bus fare is £4 per day so I'd be quids in if I was only spending 40p per day to be comfortable while I worked at home.

I do understand that often every penny counts but I wouldnt say 40p was quite "too expensive to run".

LubaLuca · 05/01/2022 22:33

@coogee

Turning the heating off altogether overnight when you are in bed would probably make a noticeable difference to gas costs.
Yes, I'm not one to scrimp on heating, but I don't ever have it on overnight. I imagine it gets a lot cooler than 17° in the house overnight, but we're all tucked up so we'd never know.
Bluntness100 · 05/01/2022 22:33

At 2p an hour or so, it should he 14 pence a day max, which is just over a fiver a month,

DeepaBeesKit · 05/01/2022 22:39

We have one of those smart thermostats.its set so the heating comes on if the house goes below 15 at night. It hardly ever actually comes on unless the weather's really really cold and then its usually not until like 5am.

starfishmummy · 05/01/2022 22:40

@MarbleQueen

I can tell from my smart meter that mine costs about 3 pence an hour.
Phew. I was given one for Christmas and was getting worried when I read the first post!!
MargotMoon · 05/01/2022 22:42

According to my Hive the heating was on for less than an hour in the night last night, so it can't have dropped below 17 degrees for long. I've changed it to 16 degrees, as it's going to get colder soon.

I am not struggling, but do need to be careful. I can afford this at the moment - and yes 40p a day is less than going to work even though I walked in each morning so only paid £2 a day in bus fares.

I was just surprised that my consumption had risen by 50% but perhaps didn't appreciate that this was because it's pretty low compared to most. Apologies if the thread title was a bit over dramatic Grin

@MargotMoon

In monetary value my electric has gone up by 50% from £1.03/day in October to £1.52/day in December/January. I've been on the same fixed price tariff during that time.

I can't think what else it could be!

Christmas lights?
JasmineGarden · 05/01/2022 22:48

I don't understand why anyone, let alone someone so obsessed about 40p per day increase in costs to use something they love, has their central heating on at night?? Mine stays on 5° to protect the pipes, I can't stand it being on any higher.

A smart meter will drive you nuts.

Bluntness100 · 05/01/2022 22:48

Why did you change it to 16? So it didn’t come on? That does feel like struggling to me op.

RavingAnnie · 05/01/2022 22:50

I'd definitely just leave your heating off at night. I have never heated the house at night and I really feel the cold.

SynchroSwimmer · 05/01/2022 22:51

Does your freezer need defrosting?…..ice accumulation can increase usage…

JasmineGarden · 05/01/2022 22:52

@kingsleysbootlicker. I was just coming back to ask about Christmas Lights. I don't know what mine cost, neither do I care, they bring me joy.

kingsleysbootlicker · 05/01/2022 22:55

@JasmineGarden My electric definitely increases but I always have loads up, I love them too!

Muddlewitch · 05/01/2022 22:55

Won't you also have had lights on for longer over November/December as it got dark earlier?

Wheredidthequietgo · 05/01/2022 23:02

Daylight hours are much less in December than October, so you are using more lights. Are you cooking in an electric oven?

Biscuitsandgravyagain · 05/01/2022 23:03

Please can you post a link to the throw you have that gets really hot if you put it on high? A lot of the ones I've seen have reviews that say they don't get very hot, but I'd love one so I'm snuggly when working from home.

PinkButtercups · 05/01/2022 23:09

It cost you more to flick the kettle on then running an electric blanket.

When I boil the kettle the meter flashes red and shoots up by 5p. Crazy.

RampantIvy · 05/01/2022 23:09

We very rarely have our heating come on at night. Like a PP pointed out we are tucked up in bed and asleep so don't need it on.

PinkButtercups · 05/01/2022 23:12

We also don't have heating on at night. Will only have it on when we need to. Just flick a switch in the boiler as the digital thermostat doesn't work for a programme to run anyway. Our electric oven shoots the electric up too and the hoover!

Bluntness100 · 05/01/2022 23:13

I also don’t have my heating on at night, but the ops consumption is so very low that an extra couple of cups of coffee or Christmas lights could be the difference here,

StoneofDestiny · 05/01/2022 23:16

Anybody able to recommend a good heated throw?

JeffThePilot · 05/01/2022 23:32

My husband got me a heated poncho for Christmas, it’s the best thing ever, it is similar to the throw but clips around your neck. Great for keeping cosy when wfh.

It costs around 2p an hour to run, as others have said. Well worth the money, and saves boosting the heating.

I've got this one. Quite pricey, but it's brilliant - really warm and cosy, with a good weight to it.
I bought my Ds a cheaper one, around half that price, but it feels cheap and flimsy. Should have stuck with what I know.
