Toddler obsessed with cuckoo clocks

Cookiecrumblepie · 05/01/2022 16:19

Is this odd or AIBU and it’s totally normal?

My toddler 2 years 8 months is obsessed with cuckoo clocks. Completely obsessed. He loves playing with them for hours and watching videos of cuckoo clocks over and over on YouTube instead of a toddler show like Daniel Tiger etc. I think this is quite strange! But then again he is little so maybe a phase?

Has been going on for a few months!

My toddler is the same with helicopters 🤷🏼‍♀️ sounds fairly normal to me

AlexaShutUp · 05/01/2022 16:32

Bless! That's very cute!

JuneOsborne · 05/01/2022 16:32

At least you've avoided the Thomas trains wrapped in plasticine that are then unwrapped. There's hours of that shit on YouTube.

Tbf cuckoo clocks are quite entertaining.

LakieLady · 05/01/2022 16:34

I think that's really sweet! And I can totally see why a toddler would find a cuckoo clock fascinating.

Poppins2016 · 05/01/2022 16:35

My DS went through a phase of wanting to watch steam trains or big fish/sharks online when he was about 2.5 years old. I think it's fairly normal!

If you don't want him to watch YouTube videos of cuckoo clocks over and over, you could always introduce him to something else.

Cookiecrumblepie · 05/01/2022 16:41

Thanks all, I was starting to think there was something wrong!

Do you remember the books and tv series goosebumps. There was one called I think ‘the cuckoo clock of doom’ about a boy who touched the bird and started ageing backwards so was a toddler again….
You never know

I know a kid who loves dishwashers. Knows everything there is know, actually gives good advice before a purchase.

That is so sweet and pretty common at that age to obsess over something. Mine would spend hours watching videos of someone dropping little plastic figures of Paw Patrol/Disney characters into a tub of water and saying their names Confused, he loved to re-enact it with his toys too. Kept him out of mischief during a house move. He doesn't even remember the videos now but still says 'Skye' in sn Aussie accent like the voiceover.

firstimemamma · 05/01/2022 17:02

When mine was a toddler he was obsessed with dustbin lorries. They like what they like op! Grin

BarbaraLoganPrice · 05/01/2022 17:07

Mine was really into windmills and water filters at that age- the ones you put fruit in and screw into your water bottle. Have a photo somewhere of him asleep cuddling the filter. And at aged 3 his favourite toy is now an antique wooden coffee grinder Smile
It's a lovely, natural curiosity and in a world dominated by screens I'd encourage it as much as I could.

The ability to understand and enjoy a machine like a cuckoo clock or jack in a box is a maths skill. The same kids also tend to enjoy structured games like dominoes. Try buying a jack in the box or a peekaboo teddy and getting him off Youtube to help build a wider interesf.

Vampirethriller · 05/01/2022 17:09

Mine likes snails. She likes to pick them up and kiss them. Cuckoo clocks would be a relief.

Mine is obsessed with diggers 😂

musicalfrog · 05/01/2022 17:11

Ahh you should get him to watch Disney's Pinocchio there is a lovely sequence of animated wooden clocks in that film ❤

How cute! One of mine was obsessed with hoovers (not just the one at home, a hoover anywhere)... he grew out of it, nothing to worry about, enjoy then when they are little!

yoyo1234 · 05/01/2022 17:13

That's lovely Smile. A bit like a jack in the box. DS1 loved Argos, amongst other things, with all the screens and numbers he called it "The Numbers Shop" and liked to go and just sit and watch the screensConfused. They can enjoy an odd assortment of things at that age.

I had one with a digger phase!

Pro: birthday cakes were easy
Con: we used to stand really still and watch any that we saw. Really still, like stalkers. Cold, bored stalkers.

thickthighs73 · 05/01/2022 17:16

Why do you think it’s strange ? I had a friend whose child loved (note I didn’t use the word obsessed) watching the opening of kinder eggs on YouTube ? All children are different there isn’t any strange at that age, it’s all about learning etc

AliceW89 · 05/01/2022 17:16

At the same age, my nephew was absolutely obsessed with incy wincy spider. Everything was Incy. We had to look for spiders everywhere. Drew incy anytime he had paper and pens. Sang the song tens of times a day. Wore a Halloween top continually.

My SIL was worried but was told that intense, seemingly weird interests are completely normal and healthy and, like everything, a phase!

One of the boys at my nursery went from kissing them, to accidentally eating one, to now purposefully eating them Confused. Thankfully he has grown out of that now but watch out for it!
