Toddler obsessed with cuckoo clocks

Cookiecrumblepie · 05/01/2022 16:19

Is this odd or AIBU and it’s totally normal?

My toddler 2 years 8 months is obsessed with cuckoo clocks. Completely obsessed. He loves playing with them for hours and watching videos of cuckoo clocks over and over on YouTube instead of a toddler show like Daniel Tiger etc. I think this is quite strange! But then again he is little so maybe a phase?

Has been going on for a few months!

Mine obsesses over marbles or gum balls online same age as your dc. He loves watching them roll around in a track or in a built marble run and would watch it for ages. Then he copies them and uses sweetcorn or peas to roll it on furniture or his toys and sets himself little tasks. I don't find it concerning and actually quite cute watching him play like that.

I’m 53 and I love cuckoo clocks. They never fail to make me smile 😀

Tal45 · 05/01/2022 17:21

I think cuckoo clocks is quite an unusual interest for a child - diggers, tractors, dinosaurs, trains etc are common. Mine was obsessed with phones at that age, I didn't think it was that unusual although he would look at pictures of them for ages - turned out he had ASD although wasn't diagnosed until much older. Could be something could be nothing OP I wouldn't worry yet.

This is adorable. There's videos online of a little girl who is obsessed with rubber ducks, so cute. I like that your son dances to the beat of his own drum already.

Hankunamatata · 05/01/2022 17:26

Mine used to sit watching tractors go round and round in fields

Totally normal in a toddler. DS was obsessed with a YouTube channel called something like “Great Train Race”, which was two steam trains very slowly overtaking each other for 30 mins. Riveting it was not.

Idontknowlondon · 05/01/2022 17:27

Did he watch that episode of Peppa Pig with the cuckoo clock?

Mine sometimes picks up an obsession after someone mentions it on a TV show or such.

Well with respect it's not possible to tell from this post whether your child is autistic or not. It could be totally normal or it could be an autistic trait. Would need more developmental info to tell...

You should show him this if he loves marbles..... Could open up a whole new world?!

FFS why are you trying to diagnose autism from liking cuckoo clocks, I despair I really do
RozHuntleysLeftHand · 05/01/2022 17:38

Mine was utterly obsessed with switches at that age!
I remember spending ages carrying him around so he could flick the light switches on and off repeatedly.
It worked in my favour though, he also loved the washing machine buttons so I taught him how to use them, now at 9 he puts all our washing on! Grin

Both of mine loved the bin lorry. Soon as they saw the flashing lights at the top of the estate we’d have to all go stand at the front door and watch them making their way (slowly) up the street to our house.
The bin men were lovely and always had a bit chat with them, but we’d still have to stand to attention, watching while they went to the top of the street, then reversed back down to get out of the estate. The driver would always beep his horn, we’d have to wave like lunatics before we were allowed back inside again. Those long winter mornings just flew by….

@thickthighs73 the OP explicitly asked if there might be something wrong with her child. It doesn't take a genius to guess that one of her main concerns could be autism since repetitive behaviour and obsessive interests are part of the diagnostic criteria.

shouldistop · 05/01/2022 17:50

Mine was obsessed with trains at that age. He still likes them now at 5.5.

Bortles · 05/01/2022 17:50

Hehehe. Playing peekaboo with the cuckoo. Recently looked them up online as had one in my family home growing up and was surprised you can get a good Swiss one for less than I thought..

No she didn’t ask for an diagnosis of autism

Pbbananabagel · 05/01/2022 18:10

Yep totally normal, mine of same age is currently obsessed with Whales. Started with the snail and the whale book, he will watch hours of blue planet and whale watching vids on YouTube and has to have a toy whale in his hand at all times. Just bloody annoying this started after I’d bought Christmas presents all featuring zog as this was his previous obsession Angry

ShinyMe · 05/01/2022 18:25

Has he seen this giant one OP?

Vampirethriller · 05/01/2022 19:01

@Ozanj well that's comfortingGrin

Cardboardboxingring · 05/01/2022 19:52

I was obsessed with fridges when I was that age! Back when Iceland used to sell them I insisted on opening and inspecting every single one while my mum did the shopping. I turned out to be a pretty normal and functioning member of society, though I do still enjoy a wander around white goods shops Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/01/2022 19:58

It's quite normal and very sweet.

TansySorrel · 05/01/2022 19:59

I lived cuckoo clocks as a kid and was bought one for my bedroom for a birthday one year
