To think January and February are weird months?

I've just gone to the supermarket and it's virtually empty, and it's got me thinking.

Does anyone else just find January and February weird?
Christmas and New Year is over so there's not much to look forward to for those who celebrate. The majority of people are skint, everywhere is so quiet, it's absolutely freezing and gets dark early. Idk I feel so bleh!

Am I the only one who finds it really eerie?

Tesco here has the burns night display where they had the new year steak pies and the Xmas party food. Some Easter eggs out too

Winnerwinnerveggiedinner · 04/01/2022 20:44

I make a point of cheering up in February at the thought of slightly longer days, pancake day, half term and my birthday. Smile The Christmas pounds have dropped off, Dry January is over and there are flowers in the garden. I don’t want to be depressed about the weather and darkness for one sixth of each year.

balalake1 · 04/01/2022 20:45

Not having school age children I always book time off in February or March, so winter does not seem so long. Something to look forward to and better than having a fortnight off at Christmas.

MaxNormal · 04/01/2022 20:47

January and February are vile months. March isn't much better, it's lighter so you've got more daylight hours to see the scabby, arse-end-of-winterness of all of it before the greening starts again.
Plus daffodils, lying that spring is here when it plainly isn't. Little yellow liars.

LadyIckenham · 04/01/2022 20:50

My attitude to January has completely changed since having children. We have three family birthdays from end Sep to early December, followed by the Christmas juggernaught, it's the busiest time of year for work for me and DH, multiple things at school to attend..... so, whilst those things are enjoyable, I love the fact that I can get to January and not have anything to do other than work and recovering.

And my DC seem to be much less prone to illness than they are in the Autumn term, so no constant rescheduling of work plans.

So I rather see it as lovely and calm.

I don't do dry January, either, so can enjoy a nice glass of wine at weekends. I do give up for lent instead, though.

PuppyMonkey · 04/01/2022 20:50

I hate January in particular as it seems to go on for MONTHS.Confused

MsTSwift · 04/01/2022 20:52

I like January- fresh start feeling Feb and March though are the worst. It’s often still cold in March and I feel like it’s has been winter forever

Retrievemysanity · 04/01/2022 20:55

Surprised by the January hatred! I really like it as still on a buzz from Christmas and we usually go to a really good panto mid month too and full of optimism for the year ahead. February however-I hate it!! By then I’m thoroughly fed up with the cold weather, murky skies and boring days! Not a massive fan of March either but no month can be as bad as February for me!

42isthemeaning · 04/01/2022 20:55

I don't mind January / February though I prefer when the lighter nights come back plus I dislike early morning starts in the dark. I like spotting the snowdrops starting to break through and the frosty, crisp sunny days. I live rurally, so maybe that helps?

Minniem2020 · 04/01/2022 21:14

I don't mind February but January is awful. I just feel like it's something I need to get through and has no redeeming features at all.

Maskedsingerispants · 04/01/2022 21:20

January is odd, bleak and barren. Went to the the first food shop of the year this morning and it was so quiet, so little food (went to three shops to find chicken breasts 🤷🏻‍♀️)
I don’t mind Feb as pancake day, Valentine’s, a few bits to get you through, March, is awful.
However, like a previous poster says, since having a child, I sort of like the calm and having less to do. I live abroad so also sort of revel in foggy, Misty mornings and cosy nights by the fire as it won’t last as by May will be sweltering

BHX3000 · 04/01/2022 21:24

I quite like January because it feels great to get rid of my annoying dear family, and it’s also one of the most exciting months at work, packed with stuff. February is short and usually includes a week off and a week/10 days working abroad.

Now, November. That’s a boring, dull month. May too… although at least May is warmer.

Mochudubh · 04/01/2022 21:25

I like to go somewhere warmish for a week in Feb, just to get some sunlight and Vitamin D. Wasn't able to go last year and haven't booked for this year as things are still too uncertain.

Mumofsend · 04/01/2022 21:36

I dislike January and Feb. March depends on the weather. Just grey and bleak

Agadorsparticus · 04/01/2022 21:37

Yep it's my birthday this month, it's always shit. No one has money or inclination to celebrate after over indulging at Xmas. Everyone is on a diet or sober. I usually let my birthday pass without fuss. I'd planned a fab trip for my 40th but a pandemic put an end to that. Boo. Roll on Springtime.

Wendyer · 04/01/2022 21:37

I like January and February but hate March to about May. The coming of spring and actual spring makes me panic and feel really anxious.

OwMyToe · 04/01/2022 21:37

I was born in February, so naturally that proves it's a wonderful month! Wink

I prefer the cooler time of the year, and though I enjoy most of the lead-up the Christmas, it can be a bit much. After Christmas, there's less stress and obligation, and I can finally relax and just try to enjoy life. Things seem to find an equilibrium again.

My favourite months are October and November, but I can't complain about January and February.

RedRobin100 · 04/01/2022 21:39

They’re shit months

BlueBellsArePretty · 04/01/2022 21:47

I don't mind January, quite like the laid back vibe. I don't really do diets or dry January so the chocolate and prosecco haul I got at Christmas lasts nicely. Also it's very gradual, but noticed that the sky was just a bit lighter at 4pm tonight whereas 2 weeks ago it was dark.

Absolutely hate November.

Staffy1 · 04/01/2022 21:57

I’m sure this January (and late December) have been worse than usual for dark mornings. It only seems to get light enough to open the curtains at about 8:00am.

5128gap · 04/01/2022 21:57

I despise them enough to award them my most hated MN clichés. One is 'vile' and the other is 'grim'.

SalsaLove · 04/01/2022 22:00

I don’t know about the majority of people being skint. Maybe some are. I went to my local Co-Operative today and there was no meat, which was fine for me but I thought it was strange. I think January and February are fun because Six Nations is starting.

Staffy1 · 04/01/2022 22:00

I love those little yellow liars Smile

TheRigatonini · 04/01/2022 22:00

OMG was just talking about this. IT’S SO BLEAK.
