Disgusted by excessive Xmas treats!

My kids are doing a final clear up before going back to school tomorrow, and 8yo trotted off to fetch her Xmas sweet haul which she had forgotten about and therefore barely touched.

Seeing it all laid out I am absolutely astounded by the amount of chocolate/sweets she has accumulated. (Even more horrified to realise that 5yo currently has a pile half this size despite receiving the same stuff as her elder sister!) This is over the last month alone. She also has two large tins full of the sweets she's been given at parties and Hallowe'en etc. I don't think our friends or family are particularly big on sweets so guess lots of little or one-off things have just accumulated.

AIBU to be a bit taken aback by the amount she's received? And what do other people do with it all? I don't think she'll get through it all but seems a waste to bin it.

I realised today I still have 3 boxes of chocolates to eat, polished a 4th off at the weekend. I guess I will heroically battle on till they are all just a memory.

Estella1841 · 04/01/2022 15:55

I remember visiting my brother and his wife in the month of June. I went in the fridge for milk and there was an intact Easter egg. I asked my brother about it and he said his wife hadn’t got round to eating it.

I literally could not believe it, the relationship has never really been the same since.

Pugroll · 04/01/2022 15:56

Donate some, pop the rest in the cupboard and they can have some bit by bit, the dates are long I expect.

Getyourarseofffthequattro · 04/01/2022 15:56

@PinkPomeranian

Thanks for the people who gave useful suggestions.

I wasn't familiar with Olio but that sounds like a good option. Would a food bank mind about seasonal items? I wasn't sure if it was a bit off to offload that kind of thing on them?

We don't do a lot of baking but we could make Easter nests or something closer to the time.

I take the point about chocolate lasting beyond its BBE but we do always seem to receive lots of lovely Easter eggs as well so I guess part of the reason I'm asking is because I don't want a cupboard full of chocolate. Our kitchen isn't that big and I need the space.

Awh I feel sad for your daughter that you're going to give her presents away. They're hardly going to take up any space Confused why not just let her eat them over however long.

I think it's a bit mean spirited to give it away unless it was at a volume where she would literally never get through it, which it's not.

Shallwegoforawalk · 04/01/2022 15:56

@Bluntness100

Op do you have an issue with food or an eating disorder. Or did you start this for a laugh? I don’t think anyone can understand the use of such hyperbole for a few sweet treats.
Yup I agree. Sounds like Mama has food ishooooos if this is a "horrifying" and "disgusting" amount. I know MN loves a competitive under eating, fat shaming thread but didn't realise it extended to an 8 year olds "haul".

That pitiful few things is barely worth posting about fgs. Easily finished off in a few weeks - unless you have a really weird attitude to treats like the OP. Confused

MintyGreenDream · 04/01/2022 15:56

That's fuck all.Ds 7 has got a santa sack full of sweets and chocolate that will last him months

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:56

It's 3 1/2 months to Easter.
So by my reckoning one chocolate portion a week would see her to then. That's def not excessive. Santa's for chocolate nests. Single sweets here and there. Pigs to share.

What is the two bin tins of sweets she also has? Like quality street etc? They'd go in general family consumption

PinkPomeranian · 04/01/2022 15:57
@PinkPomeranian my ds gets lots of chocolate over Easter/Christmas and his birthday. He really truly doesn't eat anywhere near that amount of sweets. There's a local freecycle Facebook group that I'm part of and we offered up a carrier bag of sweets accumulated over a year (both his and mine). The guy that wanted it came and got it and was delivering it to a homeless shelter.

There's no way my ds would eat the amount your dc have got in a year never mind a couple of months, he just doesn't have a sweet tooth.
Thanks so much for your helpful reply. I wouldn't have thought of Freecycle!

Give half of it to a food bank?

FrankGrillosWrist · 04/01/2022 15:58

Replace it all with a massive 😆 salad.

EatDrinkEatDrink · 04/01/2022 15:58

Ours have about 10x that EACH they are only 4 and 5 si there's no way theyll be eating it. I don't know what we are going to do with it all, they had about 12 selection boxes alone between them, then relations and other people all bought christmas chocolates. I'm thinking of sending the selection boxes in first day back to share for our daughter's bday, there's enough bars for a class of 30!!

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:58

Teach child if you don't binge on your sweets and eat them all, Mommy will give them away. Good luck at Easter.

Replace it all with a massive 😆 salad.
Or even better, eat it with a massive salad.
WorraLiberty · 04/01/2022 15:59

If it's a space issue, ditch the kids and keep the chocolate.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:59

That's actually a great idea @EatDrinkEatDrink but I'd filter our crunchies, I feel they're too old for little ones. Obv eat them yourself to protect the kids.

Shallwegoforawalk · 04/01/2022 16:02

@5128gap

I'm shocked to the core. I'm not quite sure how you deal with it to be honest. Could you maybe set fire to it, or bury it and then lay a patio on top? Or perhaps chop it into small pieces and scatter them across multiple public bins, moving between counties if you think its safer?

The tubs of sweets contain lollipops, packs of Haribo, Maoam, Swizzlers, Love Hearts, Chew-its and that kind of stuff. Usually from party bags and Hallowe'en.

Selection boxes would be shared but DH and I aren't interested in these things, and the other kids have their own tins of the same.

Maybe a helping a week until Easter would do the trick! I can just see it being shoved in a cupboard and forgotten about when newer things or baked goods are on offer.

@HelloBunny

I’m surprised by all of the people saying that it’s okay for kids eat all of this crap... Fair enough. I would have though that was a lot of sweets! I like sweet things myself, I try not to eat that much. But I definitely wouldn’t let my small child eat it. Family never gift us sweet things, so I’ve never really thought / worried about it, tbh.
There's about 16 portions of chocolate, some choc for Easter nests, some popcorn for a family movie. Some single sweets for here and now. Even if it was one treat a fortnight they'd get through it before Halloween.
EerieSilence · 04/01/2022 16:05

Donate it to food bank, FFS. Seriously.

wineandchocolateforthewin · 04/01/2022 16:06

My 5yr old has more than that, no matter how many times i tell family not to buy her sweets they still do, i just ration it out, she always seems to have loads, it's all in her drawer in the kitchen so not bothering me.
I might help myself to the odd Haribo though.... Grin
I like the ideas of melting some of the chocolate down though for rice crispy buns.......

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 04/01/2022 16:06

@SailingNotSurfing

Take it all to your local food bank and stop being so bloody dramatic. Much better to find the sweetie haul uneaten than a shitload of empty wrappers and a hugely obese child.
I swear if I find one more Celebrations wrapper in this house I will round up all my children, in-laws and grandchildren and shoot them! In 2021 I found them under a spare room bed in August, tucked behind unused suitcases.
MerryMarigold · 04/01/2022 16:07

Mine would eat that over a week. Not generally but during holidays, yes. I think it's fine for your younger daughter to have eaten half. My kids are all very slim and have no fillings. No need to get so uptight.

WorraLiberty · 04/01/2022 16:07

Maybe a helping a week until Easter would do the trick! I can just see it being shoved in a cupboard and forgotten about when newer things or baked goods are on offer.

So you do have room in your cupboards? Confused

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 16:08

The tubs of sweets contain lollipops, packs of Haribo, Maoam, Swizzlers, Love Hearts, Chew-its and that kind of stuff. Usually from party bags and Hallowe'en. meh they'll be fine to either give out in party bags or give out at Halloween if they're not gone

I can just see it being shoved in a cupboard and forgotten about when newer things or baked goods are on offer. so don't buy new things. If they're likely to want a snack, get them to get something from their box. If you're doing shopping, don't add tests for the kids. No way will chocolate be brought in my house any time soon.
