I'm 40 in the 90s I was reasonably attractive by 90s standards.
I was a size 12 blond curly hair, outfit deom topshop and put on nice make up with some Charlie perfume.
I look at my nieces all identikit long smooth hair, make up perfectly put on with false eyelashes, tiny sized, super stylish all could be models from their insta accounts as could their mates is everyone better looking these days or better tools?
Do I need a make up tutorial from one of them so I'm not such an old dog 😂

I take your No 17 Twilight Teaser and raise you Constance Carol - any colour you like!

CowMarshland · 05/01/2022 20:05

Wonder if they’re happy in their tight clothes, super high heeled shoes, fake tank, false nails/hair/eyelashes, drawn on eyebrows. If they are keen going if they’re not it’s a sad state of what is seen on SM. Be this is to be happy and you’ll be perfect. Bring back the 80s not an unrealistic fashion expectations at all Grin

TheRemotePart · 05/01/2022 20:12

Where I live, the teens are dressed up for a night out ,but going to school lol. All have better makeup than I could ever have dreamed of as a teen BUT the students all go out of their way to be as ugly and sexless as possible! No bras. Tan crops tops , those horrifying jeans that no one looks good in.horrible trainers They try to copy the 90s , which is fair enough cos that was not a glam time. I’m just sad that glitter hairspray and those little jewels and gems for your hair never made a come back ! Grin
And the male students straight up look like they should be on a 70s sex offender register.
How either of the sexes get laid, I’ll never know …

Jewel52 · 05/01/2022 20:18

Yes young women are way more polished now but I also struggle with the sameness of their look. Same hair, same make up and same, often stupidly revealing clothes, regardless of weather! Looks like a lot of work to me Shock

Young people have always worn "stupidly revealing clothes".

Weather? What's that?

I think you don't realise how old and out of touch you sound.

Newtothis86 · 05/01/2022 20:26

Can somebody please tell me if this is a negative test? We have a 9 month old and was not planning to get pregnant for another three months. However, we have just tested and this little line has just come up? It’s not a scratch or dent on the test! Thoughts please…

Why are all young girl suddenly good looking?
DrSbaitso · 05/01/2022 20:29

God, all these teenage girls with their pregnancy tests, like bloody clones.

ThePlumVan · 05/01/2022 20:35

I think you’re right OP - I’m a similar age as you so basically a teenager in the 90’s. Because I had horses I was mostly makeup free and a bit scruffy - that was the choice you made, horses instead of everything else.

Now, all the teenagers at my yard are full make up, false lashes, false nails, and stylish outfits - even in the rain Sad

I guess life moves on !

Bebethany · 05/01/2022 20:47

Perfect teeth, long straight hair, good bodies. Poor little things really?

EllaPaella · 05/01/2022 20:52

I was a 90's teenager. Foundation was usually cheap and oxidised so that we all had orange faces and pale necks. We didn't have decent hair straighteners so if you were like me and have super frizzy hair then you had no choice but to wear it scraped back in a pony tail like Mel C everyday.
My Mum would never have given me £30 for a foundation when I was 16 but all my friends daughters and my stepdaughter all seemed to be wearing really expensive make-up from an early age. My 20 year old step daughter wears higher end make-up than I do and she is a student with no job!
I wish 16 year old me had had GHD straighteners and Estée Lauder double wear 😔
Oh and the invention of really good fake tan has been a game changer. We didn't have that in the 90's either!
In summary I think it's just that there are so many better products available now. I am so grateful that social media wasn't a thing then though. I can't imagine how it must be trying to navigate the teenage years these days.

Onlinedilema · 05/01/2022 20:54

I wouldn't say young men and women are more beautiful nowadays at all.
I think they are fatter. Just look at Top of the Pops as to how thin people were in say the 70s or 80s.
In real life I see young women/teenagers absolutely plastered in make up. The slug look is , thankfully, on the wane but oh my word the stupidly inflated lips!!!
Ridiculous. They don't make you beautiful just, well strange and porn star looking.
Nobody looks like they do in Insta gram, nobody. I do agree that a lot of young males have the serial killer/paedophile look about them with some awful haircuts. They look like they are in criminal gangs.
So glad social media was not about when I was a teenager. All that remains are a few (thankfully not many) faded photographs. Nothing else captured, no messages etc we were allowed to do what we wanted without the worry that someone was recording out every movement.
I always thought I was fat. Looking back I really wasn't. I was tall for my age and all my friends were tiny little dots, made me feel like a fat giant but I was very thin in reality.
Never did anything with my eyebrows until I got married and my friend plucked them for me. Think this has benefited me in the long run as I hardly do anything with them now.
When my girls were younger and used to ask me "Do I look ridiculous in this outfit?" My response was always , "You don't know the meaning of the word. I was a teenager in the 80s, ridiculous was my middle name!"

pollymere · 05/01/2022 20:56

I think it's that they have tutorials showing them how to do things and decent nutrition giving them good skin and hair.

TheRemotePart · 05/01/2022 21:04

@EllaPaella yes tan! It was shit! You were just pale 50 weeks of the year unless you were just back from holiday.! Never forget Johnson’s Holiday Skin selling out when it went on sale in the early 00s
Or hit the sunbeds. And are now in late 30s/early 40s and literally paying for it with Botox for the lines!
I was too poor to afford sunbeds thankfully but I have family members the same age who have not aged as well!

LilQueenie · 05/01/2022 21:05

Its all makeup and clones now. Bring back the individual happy without cosmetics. (or at least the 15 layers for a "natural look")

MadameTuffington2 · 05/01/2022 21:16

DD19 used to faff with straighteners, contouring and stupid amounts of (often pricey) skincare and makeup but has now chilled out and sports a natural and much more attractive look IMO. DD15 is a full-on Jeffree Star & Ru Paul devotee - I find the level of attention to detail and perfection painful to behold as she is so pretty without - it causes anxiety, wastes time and she thinks the whole fillers and fake bum thing is cool - I’m a boring old git and I don’t like it. I was a teen in the mid 80s, used to paint my nails multicoloured and wear 100 Madonna style bangles up my arm, sparkly leg warmers and electric blue No.17 eyeliner and mascara with roll-on lipgloss - In the 90s, I raved so it was minimal makeup, good skincare and baggy sportswear - much more relaxed and free spirited - it’s the lip fillers that get me - some girls suit whilst others look ludicrous.

Piggyk2 · 05/01/2022 21:16

@DartmoorChef

As you say yourself they all look alike, and it's all make up, filters and fake. As for the current trend in slug like eyebrows I don't even begin to understand how anyone thinks it looks good.

There's also way too much pressure from social media for girls to look perfect as well which is not healthy in any way.

Yes this. High end make up from Harvey Nics... today's young youngsters have missed out. I grew up on market make up and superdrug and it was just the basics at 14/15. I wouldn't change a thing for todays snapchat trends nor bloggers
DrSbaitso · 05/01/2022 21:24

When was that? As a mass trend, I mean.

Face and body paint dates back to prehistoric times.

Hawkins001 · 05/01/2022 21:47

Reading with intrigue

LilQueenie · 05/01/2022 22:03

DrSbaitso I know cosmetics have been around forever in some capacity but to accentuate feature mostly not to trowel it on and look like a clone as it has been for the last 20ish years.

DrSbaitso · 05/01/2022 22:11

@LilQueenie

DrSbaitso I know cosmetics have been around forever in some capacity but to accentuate feature mostly not to trowel it on and look like a clone as it has been for the last 20ish years.
The 1990s had jewels pasted on above the eyebrows (when you could locate them) and brown and blue eyeshadow, the 1980s had neon makeup with shapes drawn on the face, the 1970s had mad sparkly disco makeup, the 1960s had "cat eyes" (with beehive hairdos) and the 1950s and 1940s were all about red lipstick. And I don't think prehistoric paint was meant to look natural.

Striking aesthetics in makeup aren't a new thing. I just don't understand how every generation doesn't realise it's doing exactly what the previous one did.

The reason those clickbait "remember these awful fashions from whatever decade" articles are popular is because so many people followed those trends, and they were usually awful!

puffyisgood · 05/01/2022 22:15

the main answer is obviously that they don't & it's just OP who is old, but also there is much more of a culture these days of large numbers (by no means all, of course) of kids of both sexes not drinking, being really fanatical about exercise and diet etc, this does make a difference in no small number of cases. there are also way more kids with really straight, really white teeth than there used to be.

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 05/01/2022 22:16

@Joystir59

I think young women in full make up and lip fillers, straight hair look bloody awful and very ugly. They all look the same.
For fucks sake, grow up. Their style is not to your taste, that doesn’t mean it’s ok to call them ugly.
DrSbaitso · 05/01/2022 22:25

I don't recall the older generation thinking we looked particular amazing.

Roxy69 · 05/01/2022 22:26

They do all look and sound the same. They don't seem to aspire to be individuals any more, just want to 'follow' people and be 'influenced'. It's really very creepy.

Jewel52 · 05/01/2022 22:28

Wonder if you realise what a bitch you are? Hope your pointless nastiness added something to your dull life 😉
