I'm 40 in the 90s I was reasonably attractive by 90s standards.
I was a size 12 blond curly hair, outfit deom topshop and put on nice make up with some Charlie perfume.
I look at my nieces all identikit long smooth hair, make up perfectly put on with false eyelashes, tiny sized, super stylish all could be models from their insta accounts as could their mates is everyone better looking these days or better tools?
Do I need a make up tutorial from one of them so I'm not such an old dog 😂

I think the girls who look normal and no drag queeny stand out in a good way.

My niece doesn't wear any makeup and still looks wonderful, as youth can.

BashfulClam · 04/01/2022 01:13

Yep they should do the same sentence we all had to….

More selfies and photos forcing them to look at themselves, social media - seeking validation from their peers in the form of likes and follows in response to photos and videos, lots of photos and videos online on how to do make up and hair.

I actually find it really sad that so many teenage girls choose to live life behind a selfie filter. It’s actually tragic how many of their mid 40s Mums do too.

They all seem to be exempt from wearing masks which is odd.

Puffalicious · 04/01/2022 01:23

YABU for wearing Charlie! I'm 10 years older than you and it was all YSL Paris/ CKOne/ Beautiful. Charlie?Blush

Because, back in the 80’s we were taking our tips from magazines like Just17. We weren’t bombarded every day with Insta posts etc. We were happy buying our weekly magazines, discussing the tips and then getting on with our non-digital lives.

I really feel for youngsters nowadays. The volume of pressure created by SM is ridiculous. I know every generation think ps that they had it best. But I really am grateful for having my younger years without the Internet age, but being around at the start of it re my work life. I would definitely not have done so well, personally, being an early teen today.

Emerald5hamrock · 04/01/2022 01:34

They look great, don't envy it, they have the same issues we all had.
My blue eye shadow days and Avon perfumes are long gone.
Work on your self esteem, join the gym, be fabulous 40's.

Snugglepumpkin · 04/01/2022 01:39

You are seeing the obvious signs of youth.
The clear skin with tight pores (even if they think they are spotty right now, it's spots on young skin)
The as yet unaffected by a lifetime of exposure to the sun colouring of the skin on their faces.
The high quality cameras that they use to take photos rather than the ones you had in the 90s which did not flatter so you can't see that you had all those things going for you too.
Who owned a ring light when you were a teenager?
Who had even heard of one or knew how to pose for a photo?

The natural plumpness that old women try to replicate with fillers.
The genuine wrinkle free brows.
The unelongated earlobes that older people have.
The sheer energy they have because they are young.

All the stuff that the years take away they still have & it is attractive.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/01/2022 01:44

My dd is 23. Neither she nor her friends are like this. They are natural, edgy in their non conformism to it and genuinely attractive and intelligent.

Iamthewombat · 04/01/2022 01:46

Well, there’s your answer. How many of them have you seen in real life, without filters, photoshop and daft pouts at the camera?

Also, where are these legions of tiny sized teenagers? Today’s teenagers are, on average, much fatter than their 1980s equivalents.

MajorNeville · 04/01/2022 01:48

Not all teenagers are into contouring and loads of make up, loads of them look 'normal' but most people don't notice them, it's as old as the hills.

Juniper68 · 04/01/2022 01:55

I'm older than you but was stunning in the late 80s. There were a handful. I'd be one of many now. I was naturally like that but today they can fake it.
I'm not bragging it was just genetics. Parents were gorgeous. Aesthetics mean nothing.

Biscuitandacuppa · 04/01/2022 01:55

They all look the same, it’s like a stepford wives episode of uniformity! Long, straight hair, big eyebrows, false lashes, contoured face and big lips. None of them have any individuality. All of them are filtered to high heaven. I think it’s sad.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 04/01/2022 01:58

I hadn’t been “out out” for a few years due to having two babies in close age.
I remember getting ready and saying to my husband how rubbish I felt about myself. I could see my pores, my hair was a bit fluffy, I was a bit heavier than when I last went out. I almost cancelled going.
When I actually got out there, I couldn’t believe how “normal” looking all the women were. I’d been so used to seeing digitally altered versions of people, it had actually shifted my idea of what being “dressed up” for a night out looked like.
I’m a woman in my thirties. Imagine what damage filters and photo editing is doing to teenage brains.

XelaM · 04/01/2022 01:58

I was shocked by how incredibly well my daughter put on eye liner and mascara for NYE (she's 12 and never used eye liner before). It was really perfect eye make up. MUCH better than I can do and I've been putting on make-up for over two decades. It's all from YouTube tutorials. And yes, I agree that all the girls nowadays seem to be gorgeous.

It's scary. I'm happy I have sons. They're all so desperate to be perfect on the outside nowadays. Not just young ones. Some over 30s 40s and above go to extremes. (Shudder)
Monty27 · 04/01/2022 02:12

I've been saying this for years. (I should be on gransnet but I haven't been blessed thus far)
I have two DC's. 1 DD (28) 1 DS (26).
Of course they're both naturally beautiful 😂
But good lord the karshadians or whatever they're called and they're ilk and Towie and of course social media and photo shop shit has a lot to answer for. Teeth straighteners, hair straighteners, personal trainers, life style coaches. Vegazles and all of the body dysmorphic head fucks they're up against. The list is endless. None of which comes cheap while therapy (online at a price) is a symptom of the time it seems.
Mine are blessed but still subscribe to it 😭

And taller too! I use public transport a lot and I'm always shocked at how tall teenagers are now!

My babysitter is 15, she's taller and heavier than me, if you saw us from the back you would think she was the adult.

I don't agree that their all tinier now, it's all very fake. Everywhere I go im forever stunned how big they all are nowadays,

I often question what is being put in our food to make our children so tall!

CheeseMmmm · 04/01/2022 02:21

Sorry OP totally disagree! And that's ok, not looking for a row with anyone! But this is aibu so have armour on in case Grin

  1. Iirc OP said why all good looking now, that's not the same thing at all as well applied makeup, hair done in certain way etc. It's highly unlikely that girls are simply better looking than 90s! Unless we're being selectively bred by aliens and don't know..
  1. It's just different fashions. In hair makeup etc. That's all. I was a teen in 80s. Huge backcombed hair, purple eyeshadow, blue jay eyeliner, blue mascara. Opalescent lipstick.
Got a pic I'm in white mini skirt, peach crop top with body talk written on it, white mini stilettoes. I'm blonde and vvv pale. Legs blue-white with white skirt and shoes. I mean now I think wtaf. Then? That was the fashion.
  1. They're your beloved nieces! Of course you look at them and know they're stunning!
  1. It's vv high maintenance now. Expense, time, effort. I think that's not a good thing.
But then certainly my friends and I at 13 etc spent hours on hair makeup so maybe I take that back!
  1. I liked the big variety of styles, looks, clothes in the 80s - mid 90s. 6th form early 90s there were the goths, metal types, casuals, hippie types, indie kids, all own different styles.
And also loads of girls don't have your nieces look. There are still girls with eg short/ v short hair, loads of piercings, clumpy boots and combat type trousers etc IE there's still 'alternative' scene around!
CheeseMmmm · 04/01/2022 02:28

IsMae stacks of v slender girls and boys on my high street every Saturday!

We are getting bigger and have been for years- taller, bigger hands feet, stronger looking, etc.

Whole of society is getting heavier, and more are overweight all ages etc.

But all teenage girls are not good looking with dead straight hair, nor are they all tall, nor are they all slender.

Looking at my old school photos the shift is really obvious.

I'm 5'3 and a fair few of yr 6 towered over me! Some were also vv developed bodies. Like fully grown and big busts etc. Primary school. That bothered me as so many men would have liked at body shape and seen old enough for anything from leering to well the whole range. They were in primary school, only 11...

Alayalaya · 04/01/2022 02:29

I ask myself the same question! 15 years ago I was considered beautiful. But I wouldn’t match up to the girls I see nowadays. They’re so sculpted and I don’t know how they do it. Even other women in their 30s seem to look sculpted, it’s not an effect of youth. I’m genuinely puzzled.

The other thing that puzzles me is women who claim to be the same weight and height as me but they aren’t fat? Perfectly flat stomach despite having a BMI of 25.
