I'm 40 in the 90s I was reasonably attractive by 90s standards.
I was a size 12 blond curly hair, outfit deom topshop and put on nice make up with some Charlie perfume.
I look at my nieces all identikit long smooth hair, make up perfectly put on with false eyelashes, tiny sized, super stylish all could be models from their insta accounts as could their mates is everyone better looking these days or better tools?
Do I need a make up tutorial from one of them so I'm not such an old dog 😂

Same reason police officers are 'getting younger'.

It's just your perception, exaggerated by the event of social media, the normalisation of unselfconscious posing and digital filters.

DartmoorChef · 04/01/2022 00:35

As you say yourself they all look alike, and it's all make up, filters and fake. As for the current trend in slug like eyebrows I don't even begin to understand how anyone thinks it looks good.

There's also way too much pressure from social media for girls to look perfect as well which is not healthy in any way.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/01/2022 00:35

There's still a range of shapes and sizes of girls, but it's easier now for some of them to be insta identikit because of hair straighteners, better makeup and more pressure from SM.

They don't all conform to how you describe your nieces though.

DarkDarkNight · 04/01/2022 00:36

I know what you mean. No Cover Girl compact foundation in orange and white eye liner on your waterline, no dodgy Topshop or Tammy Girl fashions.

They all seem to be masters with make up - full contour and highlighting. I blame the Kardashians.

I feel sorry for them though. It must be hard to live up to. We have an apprentice at work and she said they all get dressed up for Insta photos then changed into comfier clothes. She openly says it’s all just done for social media.

SheWolfOFFrancee · 04/01/2022 00:37

Filters and photo editing software on social media but also people seem to have a lot more work done (like fillers, lashes etc) then back in the day

CounsellorTroi · 04/01/2022 00:39

I know what you mean, they are all so much more polished now than when I was that age.

Notimeforaname · 04/01/2022 00:39

Yes I only see young girls now with poker straight long hair!

ElinorOliphant · 04/01/2022 00:39

I know what you mean! However,we were fashionable at the time…. Weren’t we?!

My nieces absolutely cake on the make up,it’s a hideous amount but my goodness the application technique is so good. Thanks to You Tube.

MaryAndHerNet · 04/01/2022 00:39

YouTube tutorials.

Don't ask me, I'm 42, I don't know how to contour and stuff.. but there's 9999999 YouTube's that'll teach teenagers to do it

baffledbunny · 04/01/2022 00:40

I think it's because of toutube tutorials. We never had access to tons of advice like that at our fingertips, literally showing us how to do perfect makeup when I was growing up. We just the occasional just 17 magazine with a freebie on it or some crappy cheap makeup from woolies and had to figure it out for ourselves!

And yes my nieces all look perfect too!

onlychildhamster · 04/01/2022 00:43

I was reading Sali Hughes book pretty iconic and she talked about how when she was a makeup artist in the 1990s, while she was paid proper wages (unlike beauty industry newcomers who are often expected to work for free nowadays), she had to eat pasta and scrimp and save for a professional makeup kit with proper shades of foundation. It's apparently a lot cheaper to get professional standard makeup nowadays.

Crappy cheap makeup your mate knicked from Superdrug and wants to test it on you first... The 90s.. what a time.
SalmonEile · 04/01/2022 00:44

Tutorials, reviews etc are more accessible as are straighteners and other tools.
Pre social media and online shopping the only clothes, hair products and make up available to you were those in your local store and they cost what they cost. You could also argue a lot of teens these days have more spending money than you probably did

Frazzled50yrold · 04/01/2022 00:45

It's a more uniform look. I always remember meeting a group of girls, one of whom I thought was my niece, in town but I couldn't have identified her from the rest of them. I told her this and she answered that it was the love island effect which puzzled me even more.

IWasHotInTheNineties · 04/01/2022 00:45

It’s good make up, filters, posing properly, good phone cameras, fillers and Botox Grin

IWasHotInTheNineties · 04/01/2022 00:46

Also fake eyelashes and often teeth whitening/dental work

FictionalCharacter · 04/01/2022 00:48

Yep! Not everyone thinks this is a good look, I certainly don’t. It’s just the current fashion.
TerribleCustomerCervix · 04/01/2022 00:55

As pp said, Youtube will teach anyone how to do pretty much anything.

Decent make up is much cheaper, with a much more diverse range of shades. And products which would’ve been really niche or expensive when I was a teen in the noughties (eg really good eyebrow pomade, eye lash primer) are now available through the likes of Rimmel and NYX at Boots.

More affordable, fashionable clothes. I was 18 in 2006 when Primark first started turning to producing clothes that weren’t just cheap, but on trend. It’s exploded since then, with places like Monki, H&M, even the supermarkets offering really cheap clothes that the yoof would actually wear.

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 04/01/2022 00:55

They've all got the same ironed hair and Sharpie eyebrows

I don't do ironing so i don't look like this Grin

Welldarn · 04/01/2022 00:57

On the upside, imagine how dissatisfied they are going to be when they are fat and fifty and can’t be bothered anymore. They are going to look at pictures of themselves as teenagers and think, “I was gorgeous what happened?”Grin.

Whereas we can look at pictures of ourselves with dodgy perms or mullets and terrible tie dye clothes or shell suits or 80”s. Madonna rip off outfits, at least we can believe we have improved since then Grin

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 04/01/2022 00:58

Youtube tutorials.

RobertaFirmino · 04/01/2022 01:01

They're all so tall and slim aren't they - I'm 45 and in the 90s, I was considered 'tall' at 5ft 7 ins but the young women of today tower over me!

Remember that a 90s size 12 measures up as a 10 by todays standards so you were actually slimmer than you thought. Regardless of what teens/early 20s have at their disposal today, they'll never have the pleasure of shopping in Bay Trading and Snob!

Deadringer · 04/01/2022 01:03

I know what you mean op, but i think they are very glamorous rather than better looking than girls of earlier generations. My dds are not like this, they wear minimal make up, have curly hair, have never worn fake eyelashes in their lives, their ages are 30, 23 and 18. But my neices and their friends would have a waxing session, spray tan, false eyelashes, hair extensions, and of course a full face of contoured make up for a night out, they also have reguler teeth whitening and lip fillers, it must cost an absolute fortune!

onlychildhamster · 04/01/2022 01:04

@Welldarn unless Botox/plastic surgery/liposuction becomes cheaper/more common and women are expected to look younger. I do expect many young women in their teens and 20s to become mum's in their 40s (assisted) so a 50 year old is like a mum to a 10 year old and would feel like she isn't that old (and needs the face/figure to match!)..

Mamanyt · 04/01/2022 01:09

Nope, you do not need a tutorial, because they can never teach you the one thing that makes them "beautiful." Youth. There is a physical beauty and freshness to youth that cannot be recaptured with any amount of artifice, whether products or surgery. THAT said, there is another kind of beauty that comes with age, and youth cannot compete with that, either. I would suggest you take to heart what my grandmother told me, "The setting of the sun is no less lovely than the dawn," learn to appreciate the new beauty of a woman who is strong and has withstood a lifetime with a sure sense of herself, and let those young women have that which will so soon be gone.
