to let everyone know that TENKO is being repeated starting this afternoon at 2:20 on the Drama channel?

Paradise Road is another good film about women in a choir started in a Japanese pow camp. Glenn Close is in it.
A Town Like Alice was on tv in the early hours of Sunday morning and that was heartbreaking to watch again.

Thanks for letting us know, it’s so long since I saw this, will definitely be watching it.

spanieleyes · 03/01/2022 13:00

I cried all the way through A town like Alice when it was on 😭

SophieJo · 03/01/2022 13:02

Used to watch this every Thursday evening, riveting! Have seen the whole series again recently.

Maireas · 03/01/2022 13:03

Secret Army was a brilliant series.
Based on real stories - the woman at the head of The Line was extraordinary.

CarlaH · 03/01/2022 13:03

I assumed the purpose of AIBU is to ask people if you think behaviour either yours or somebody else's is unreasonable.

This subject really doesn't fit those parameters.

Having said that I do know that all the other sections don't get as much interest so was being a bit cheeky really.

Kinda makes you wonder what the point of all the sections is though.

Blossomtoes · 03/01/2022 13:05

I think we all watched Tenko in the 80,s and all the other stuff that wasn't suitable for kids on Sunday nights! No kids TV in those days

There was kids’ TV when I was a child in the late 50s! Children were expected to be in bed on Sunday evenings. Thanks for the tip off @Rhannion, I loved Tenko.

SirChenjins · 03/01/2022 13:05

Thanks for this info - I loved Tenko and the Secret Army, I watched them both with my mum who probably just didn’t want to be disturbed by my bedtime procrastination!

Hapoydayz · 03/01/2022 13:09

YANBU it's brilliant, not seen it in years so will definitely watch. Hope it's as good as I remember

StellaAndCrow · 03/01/2022 13:16

Thanks for the info about Secret Army being on Talking Pictures (channel 81 on Freeview). I'll look out for it. I watched some of Enemy at the Door on there recently - does anyone remember that, about German occupation of the channel islands?

starfishofbethlehem · 03/01/2022 13:16

@TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky

Thank you, I remember it being on in the early 80s,or may have been earlier. A great cast. Does anyone remember Secret Army as well?
Secret Army is currently on Talking Pictures on Sunday evenings (and an afternoon in the week too I think).

It's the first time I have seen it since it was originally on and had forgotten how many people get killed almost every week often by the "lifeline" people and resistance in order to protect themselves.

starfishofbethlehem · 03/01/2022 13:17

Oops I should have read on!!

tillytoodles1 · 03/01/2022 13:38

I started to watch Secret Army, but it reminded me of 'Allo 'Allo.

Me too, especially those wooden crosses and wee Freddy. I don’t understand why Virginia McKenna isn’t a dame, she is a great, understated actress in this and Carve Her Name With Pride and does so much for animals, especially lions.

I loved A Town Like Alice series - Bryan Brown was one of my first ever crushes! Such a brilliant book too.

Yes we got that on DVD about three years ago. Oddly I remembered the music really well!

Secret Army is about the best programme there has ever been in my view. Also liked Tenko - I have the books that are based on the series.

I think the key things about some of these programmes was that the actors actually lived during the war. Some of them fought in it so they knew what they were acting about. The dialogue was always very good because they didn't rely on special effects etc.

DameAlyson · 03/01/2022 14:29

No kids TV in those days

Of course there was. Blue Peter, Doctor Who, Grange Hill, Worzel Gummidge, all the Sunday teatime serials, to mention just a few.

I started to watch Secret Army, but it reminded me of 'Allo 'Allo.

That was rather the point of 'Allo 'Allo!

HemanOrSheRa · 03/01/2022 14:31

@Roomba

Oo, will have to rewatch this. I used to watch it with my mother when I was little! Probably deeply unsuitable for a small child, but then she used to lend me Jackie Collins books when I'd finished my primary school reading books and was bored Grin

Hope it's as good as I vaguely remember it being.

Ha! Same here Grin.
Maireas · 03/01/2022 14:40

Enemy at the Door was good.
Yes, 'Allo 'Allo was based on Secret Army. Yvette really did lead many airmen to safety down enemy lines.
They were brave people.

notacooldad · 03/01/2022 14:44

Why is this in AIBU?
Because everything gets dumped in here. People forget there are other topics such as "Telly Addicts" 🤷‍♀️

it is good to be fair

People also appear to forget they’re not obliged to post 🤷‍♀️

I think the poster may mean no dedicated kids TV channel in the 80s. It pretty much went off after Newsround. There was the occasional TV show for kids / families in the evenings, but nothing like what's available today.

drigon · 03/01/2022 14:50

Yes, loved Tenko and Secret Army aged 10+ in the late 70s/ early 80s. I saw the last part of A Town like Alice on the weekend and I noticed they cut large chunks of the book out but it was still excellent. I too cried at the end when they eventually found each other.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/01/2022 14:51
