No, nor should you

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/01/2022 14:48

Why would you?

Some countries have mandated this I think so it’s possible but obviously not ideal.

KiloWhat · 02/01/2022 14:48

No! It's also hard to wear one around a 2 year old if they are in a distance that allows them to pull it off your face and ping it

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2022 14:48

Don’t do this. There’s no need.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 02/01/2022 14:49

Whilst I admit it seems a bit silly a pp calling it child abuse Hmm

blablablablablablablabla · 02/01/2022 14:50

I thought the advice was that children under 2 should not wear a mask because it's dangerous for them.

Does that mean over 2 is safe ?

The only reason it crossed my mind was to protect them in indoor environments.

Yes when I lived in the US so it was the law. She was pretty good about it, I’m not convinced it was worthwhile as she’d fiddle with it a lot, but all the kids I knew were generally accepting of it. However, it was a deciding factor in us moving back to the U.K. as I really didn’t like her wearing one all day at daycare, as were all the other kids and teachers, and she wasn’t making great progress with her speech. But to wear on a plane, in a shop, that sort of thing was fine.

Cornettoninja · 02/01/2022 14:52

@Arabelladrinkstea

No - because that’s called child abuse!

There is no reason to try and force a 2 yr to wear a mask FFS!

Hmm that’s overly dramatic.

OP, what’s the situation a two year old would need to?

I think you might be able to make a game of it for a short period (quick car journey or something) but I wouldn’t rely on it for a longer time (visiting CEV people for longer than a quick hello).

KiloWhat · 02/01/2022 14:52

A fave covering mask thing mostly protects others not the wearer

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/01/2022 14:53

I don't put one on my 8 year old let alone a 2 year old.

You know masks don't protect the wearer? They're to protect other people around you.

Not if you use a high quality one.

If they are able to be in a buggy you could use the raincover on that

KiloWhat · 02/01/2022 14:54

Where I live (Toronto) children 2 and up need to wear a mask in indoor public spaces, including shops, doctor’s offices, hospitals, buses, and community centres. My DS is now 2.5 and wears a mask with very little trouble for about half an hour at a time. Longer than that, he starts pulling at it and toying with it. But for short errands, he’s 100% fine and it’s a total non issue. DD4 also has to wear a mask in school all day long and has less trouble with it than I do!

It helps when all the other kids are wearing them too.

They also protect the wearer. Especially if you have a well fitting FFP 3 mask.

@blablablablablablablabla I wouldn’t worry about it from the pov of protecting the child, masks are to protect people from you, there’s minimal protection the other way around.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2022 14:56

You know masks don't protect the wearer? They're to protect other people around you.

Masks also reduce the risk to the person wearing them. That’s not to say anyone should be trying to put one on a child.

TulipsGarden · 02/01/2022 14:56

I managed to get mine to wear one to sit in a GP waiting room one, when he had Covid symptoms but his PCR hadn't come back but they wanted to see him anyway. I made a game of it, and he's used to me wearing mine so didn't find it strange. But no, generally I don't think many two year old would be able to wear one for long. I wouldn't want him to wear one at nursery, he needs to see mouths moving as he's still learning to talk properly.

I do this too. I'm thinking if we need to get on a one hour flight. Just during the flight. Not at the airport or anything. I would use the buggy plus rain cover at the airport.

Yeah, you shouldn’t put an FFP 3 mask on a two year old.

thingymaboob · 02/01/2022 14:57

@blablablablablablablabla you will never get an ffp2/3 on a 2 year old! They're made for adults and incredibly uncomfortable.

I don't mind them at all. I have a small child one and have tried to use it in play so far but that's it.

I lived in a country where over 2s have to wear a mask. It’s a pain but they do get used to it if wearing them regularly. I would say though that you would need to go out with several masks if they have colds because 2 year olds get very snotty behind a mask very quickly. But I’m not sure I’d try and make a 2 year old wear a mask if it wasn’t law.
