Slimming world worked for me with my underactive thyroid

CounsellorTroi · 02/01/2022 13:24

I am also hypothyroid. I did successfully lose weight with WW l ost ten years ago but gradually put it all back. I am thinking of doing it again but with a more realistic and sustainable target this rime. Lost more than I needed to last time. I don’t want to be skinny just a healthy weight.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 02/01/2022 13:26

What are you doing to loose weight? And are your meds working for you? Do they need to be reviewed?

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/01/2022 14:15

It is possible but requires a complete change of diet and mindset, and much much less food.

DrManhattan · 02/01/2022 14:17

Still gonna have to diet. Sometimes you can put on weight if you are over doing it on the Thyroxine.

ISeeTheLight · 02/01/2022 14:17

Me too. I have done several testing I need to eat 1000 calories per day or less to lose weight. It's just not sustainable. I'm a size 20 and miserable about it.

ISeeTheLight · 02/01/2022 14:18

Several tests / some testing Hmm

Aprilx · 02/01/2022 14:19

It takes a lot more than thyroid tablets to lose weight. I was recently put onto medication for an under active thyroid (nothing to do with weight, I had blood tests for another reason), anyway everything I read indicated that it will not help with weight loss.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/01/2022 14:36

I have been hypothyroid since my early twenties and never been overweight always round 9 stone. It’s not always connected to your weight.

piglet81 · 02/01/2022 14:42

Is your thyroid function properly controlled? Lots of helpful info on HealthUnlocked thyroid forum. I’ve lost a stone or so since getting my TSH down to under 2, and my face is much less puffy so I don’t look as fat Blush

RosesAndHellebores · 02/01/2022 14:50

I have been hypo thyroid since I was 30. Have put on a stone per decade since. (Three decades).

I believe it has nothing to do with my thyroid and everything to do with the fact that I love good food and fine wine. The only denominator involved in weight loss is my own self discipline. I also think WW is a faff and a con. It works and have done it twice but put it all back on again within a year.

The only thing that works is to consume fewer calories.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/01/2022 14:50

First as PP said make sure you're on the right meds. Thereafter, totally possible to lose weight using any of the usual methods. I swear by 5:2.

Ilovefluffysheep · 02/01/2022 14:50

Levothyroxine didn't work for me at all, I had to add T3 tablets (liothyronnine) into the mix before I could lose any weight. I self source these are, as practically impossible getting them prescribed on the NHS.

I follow a low carb diet, and am now 4 stone down (or at least I was until Christmas happened! Will soon come back off when I get back to low carbing though).

Low carbing is the only thing that works for me, and even that stopped working until I got onto T3.

As piglet81 says, loads of really good info on the healthunlocked forum.

DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 02/01/2022 17:30

To be brutally honest, the only thing I have found that works for me is to go on a very low calorie diet, with a range of 800-1,000 calories per day. My resting metabolic is only around 1,300 calories so I have to severely cut down to lose weight and even then it is horrendously slow.

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/01/2022 17:34

It’s the fatigue I struggle with. I have no vavavoom

Thatnameistaken · 02/01/2022 18:00

I was diagnosed under active thyroid 10 years ago, ast summer I managed to lose 3 stone on the fast 800 diet and I'm finding it easy to keep off on the maintenance diet.

CounsellorTroi · 02/01/2022 18:11

Does your GP know you are taking them?

Angelica122345 · 02/01/2022 19:17

Yes the g.p knows I’m taking them . My face looks puffy and stomach bloated . Cutting back on food portions / have personal trainer etc

You need to calculate your daily calorie need properly and put yourself in a deficit.

georgarina · 02/01/2022 20:55

Lower carbs, higher protein helped me
And ask for your levels - they might be in range but not optimal
Good luck! x

SometimesMaybe · 02/01/2022 21:01

Hypo here. I exercise lots though as I get
Older it get harder to out run a bad diet. I also accept that I am never going to be a size 8 again. I work hard to maintain a size 12/14 and try to make peace with that is who I am and what my body is.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 02/01/2022 23:13

If you've had your review with a blood test and the meds are doing their job then it's not that
Log everything you eat for a few weeks being brutally honest with the weighing and the portion sizes. Use my fitness pal and it will tell you how much protein and carbs and fat to aim for

TheLazyToad · 03/01/2022 00:53

You will never lose weight successfully with an underactive thyroid unless your medication is optimal. Sadly, many doctors will tell you that your blood test is “normal”, and it will often be anything but. The TSH, which is often the only test doctors will do, is not a good reflection of your thyroid function. You don’t want to be “in range”, which is often what doctors will tell you is fine, it ideally needs to be below 1.0

Get yourself onto the HealthUnlocked forum of Thyroid UK, and you will soon find out just how poorly we are looked after in the UK, and it really will help you to understand more about it all.

And yes, I have been there and done that. And successfully come out the other side.

GarlandsinGreece · 03/01/2022 00:57

I’m a bit unusual, in that I have PCOS and Hashimoto’s and have remained thin throughout (5’7, 8 stone 10).

I do take a B complex to boost my energy levels, vitamin D and also liquid iron.

CounsellorTroi · 03/01/2022 01:03

I agree that we are treated poorly. My GP decided I was being over medicated and lowered my dose from 75mcg to 50. My levels were still not normal and he put me back on 75mcg. I’m going to ask for another test because I feel awful - incredibly tired all the time, no energy and my weight is ballooning.
