NYE with very young children stay up or not?

If you’re spending New Year’s Eve at home and have very young children do you all stay up to see in the new year?

My children are 3, 5 and 6.

I’m just curious because we went to bed and today I’m wondering if maybe next year I should let them stay up.

No way! If I can't go out and party any more, the least I can have is a nice quiet evening with alcohol and without overtired children around!

ZoeTheThornyDevil · 01/01/2022 11:22

My kids don't stay up, they'd be horrors and they wouldn't make it up the next day.

I didn't stay up when they were babies but I do now.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2022 11:22

Not when they were younger. Now they are teenagers we go to bed before them Grin

Arepeoplereallycoolaboutthis · 01/01/2022 11:23

Some years we do and some we don't.

I never plan to keep them up but equally I don't enforce a bedtime on NYE unless they are clearly very tired/grumpy!

It's nice to mark it in some way still of course. We normally have a little buffet and play age appropriate games.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 01/01/2022 11:24

Mine went to bed normal time and we got them up at midnight for about ten minutes. They’d be stinkers if we tried to keep them up.

CeleriacOfTheNight · 01/01/2022 11:24

I remember staying up when I was a child, but didn't with my kids- I don't think they were ever really bothered about it!

NavigatingAdolescence · 01/01/2022 11:24

DD has seen in every new year with us since she was 10 weeks old. (She slept midnight till noon as a baby/toddler anyway though.)

She’s now 11.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 01/01/2022 11:25

Mine stay up if they can manage it.

2pinkginsplease · 01/01/2022 11:26

I wouldn’t keep them up at that age. Bed time as normal. Then dh and I could have a glass or two of wine for the bells. To bring in the new year.

DeepaBeesKit · 01/01/2022 11:27

Oh gosh no mine don't stay up! Children tend to have quite strong body clocks, they don't easily lie in after a late night so you just have shattered children, it's no fun for anyone.

DH and I had some family over so stayed up (kids went to bed) and tbh I could have killed an early night. Kids were up 6 30am so I didnt get a lie in and I'm just so tired today.

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/01/2022 11:28

My almost 3 year old stayed up but that was because we had her grandparents/uncle round so she was excited. She was asleep within 5 minutes of them leaving though!

Silversun83 · 01/01/2022 11:31

5 and 3 year olds went to bed at normal time.. As did we Grin

Liverbird77 · 01/01/2022 11:36

No way! Mine are 3 and 17 months. They go to bed at 7, regardless of what's happening!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/01/2022 11:36

I don't let 8yo DS stay up. It's not long until school starts so it makes it difficult to transition back to going to bed early and getting up early for school. I sleep poorly myself and it's awful so I'm quite strict with DS getting enough sleep.

Mine’s body clock is set to vampire. 😁

We always have done. Made a proper tradition of going out for a big family meal then having everyone back to ours for drinks and games until midnight. Kids stayed up from about age 4. They would always be chuffed to have made it to midnight.

Kbyodjs · 01/01/2022 11:43

We had my two DC (age 1 and 4) and friends DC (4&5) and I put one year old to bed and let the others stay up; my 4 year old fell asleep about 11 and the others made it to midnight.
I’ve read about people letting their DC stay up until 9pm and doing a pretend new years which I quite like the sound of

Luckystar1 · 01/01/2022 11:43

No, mine are 7,5 & 1. The 1 year old was in bed at 6.30, the other 2 stayed up until around 9 (highly unusual) as we had friends over.

We went to bed at normal time too (10pm). The 1 year old breastfeeds ALL night long so we need our sleep.

Caterina99 · 01/01/2022 11:44

Mine (age 6 and 4) stayed up “late” ie an hour ish past their normal bedtimes of 7 and 8pm. They still woke up at exactly the same time this morning and probably will be tired later. No way I’d keep them up til midnight until they’re older

furbabymama87 · 01/01/2022 11:44

My younger kids go to bed. Teenager stays up.

FabricedeSauveterre · 01/01/2022 11:45

Mine definitely didn’t at that age. We did fake NYE when they were old enough to know it was NYE but didn’t let them stay up until about age 10:11 as they were horrors.

Theyellowflamingo · 01/01/2022 11:49

Absolutely no way do my kids (5,8) stay up for NY. They might go an hour or two over bedtime for a specific event like a family wedding, very occasionally, but not four and a half hours past bedtime just to see a fireworks display on TV. Especially after all the Christmas excitement. They’d be absolutely shocking the next day, and in fact they’d probably both be asking to go to bed by 9 anyway.

Iggly · 01/01/2022 11:50

Ours wanted to so we gave them that choice (10 and 12).

12 year old went to bed before 10pm, 10 year old stayed up and went to bed just after the fireworks at midnight.

SpinsForGin · 01/01/2022 11:57

We've always let DS stay up. We go to a friends who have children the same age so they just go off and play and join us for the countdown. DS is 7 and really loved it this year.

My favourite bit of the night was all the kids and adults doing old school party dances in the lead up to midnight. So much fun.

EventOfTheSeason · 01/01/2022 11:58

My 6 year old stayed up late, she asked to go to bed at 9pm Grin It was the first year she has been up later. But as said by pp she is tired today as she was up at normal time (very early!)
