NYE with very young children stay up or not?

If you’re spending New Year’s Eve at home and have very young children do you all stay up to see in the new year?

My children are 3, 5 and 6.

I’m just curious because we went to bed and today I’m wondering if maybe next year I should let them stay up.

@Kbyodjs

We had my two DC (age 1 and 4) and friends DC (4&5) and I put one year old to bed and let the others stay up; my 4 year old fell asleep about 11 and the others made it to midnight. I’ve read about people letting their DC stay up until 9pm and doing a pretend new years which I quite like the sound of
Explains the weird 9pm fireworks going off here last night.

No way. New year didn't really register with them, they would have been very disappointed when nothing actually happened at midnight.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 01/01/2022 12:00

My 11-year-old stayed up. She's still asleep.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 01/01/2022 12:00

Mine are 7 and 4 and they went to bad at normal time last night

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/01/2022 12:02

Mine did (age 7 which is very young in my book). Sort of by accident as we were having a film night Blush and the film his big sister, my dd13, wanted to watch went on a bit

Was a mistake as he had a massive tantrum at bedtime due to over tiredness

CornishYarg · 01/01/2022 12:02

DS is 10 and this is the first year we've let him stay up

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/01/2022 12:02

I mean at midnight not bedtime - that was long gone!

Tamtam86 · 01/01/2022 12:03

I wish mine had gone to bed at normal time, it's not worth it for how tired they are today!! They are 2 and 3 and made it until about 10pm as we were at a neighbour's house so just walked back when they got too tired. Next year they won't be staying up!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/01/2022 12:04

Yes unfortunately my Ds also woke up about 8.30 with a “sore leg”

Fairunibutterfly · 01/01/2022 12:26

Mine are 8 and 5. We normally let them stay up a bit later than usual and do a fake new year with them. Last night they were up much later than I intended since we decided quite late to watch a movie. I suggested a movie without realising it was a much longer movie than the usual. Then we had a few party poppers and they spent extra time playing with the streamers.

I did get them to change and brush teeth partway through the movie so when it did end they could go straight to bed. They were fine this morning, up as usual and had fun playing in the bath. I now need to get them back in routine for school next week…eek

No way. Our 6 yo stayed up to 9pm and we did a fake New Years for her. The younger kids were all in bed by 7

bonetiredwithtwins · 01/01/2022 12:28

God no! Why would you do that to yourself for a sake of a few poxy fireworks and bloody annoying Jules Holland which we all know is filmed in August or something 😂

AshLane · 01/01/2022 12:38

Yes, always.

We play board games, enjoy some food, then walk out to the live music and fireworks in our market square.
Last night we called into a pub garden, the shelter all lit up with fairy lights.
Fabulous family atmosphere, meeting friends, catching up with old friends. DC's are older now but have very fond memories and always return for NYE.

Hankunamatata · 01/01/2022 12:41

Nope. I always did when I was as a kid but our kids are gremlins. 8 and 10 year old were in bed around 9.30pm as they were wrecked. The teen did stay up.

Hankunamatata · 01/01/2022 12:45

It really depends on your kids. Mine arecesrly risers and cant cope with late nights. 2 of my friends kids with under 10s regularly stay up until midnight in weekends normally.

Scarby9 · 01/01/2022 12:45

When we were little (under 8?), we went to bed at the normal time, then our parents woke us at 11.50 and asked if we wanted to get up to see the new year in. We almost always did.

GTAlogic · 01/01/2022 12:49

Last night was the first year my 9 & 10 y old dc stayed up until after midnight. The years previous they'd always gone up at around an hour after their usual bedtime.

CremeEggThief · 01/01/2022 12:50

I always gave DS the choice (we are night owls), but to my surprise, he was about 9 or 10 before he wanted to stay up til midnight. I say to my surprise because he often stayed up until 10-11 p.m. on other nights randomly, not just for special occasions.

HiJenny35 · 01/01/2022 13:04

Yep mine are 5 and 9, they've stay up the last couple of years. We went to bed at about 1:30am, they work up at just gone 10 today (we had a nice sleep in) and will just go down normal time tonight, it's never caused us any issues but obviously some kids just can't handle the sleep time change so really depends on your kids.
