my sil gave my 12 year old dd a t shirt that says"I love chocolate, shoes, diamonds, shopping, handbags and men....so long as they're really rich" for her birthday?
Fortunately dd doesn't like it either, but....words fail me!

silly moo, get your revenge by buying her an industrial size jar of wrinkle cream

DavidTennantsMistress · 21/12/2007 21:57

outraged that the shop advertises them for such young girls yes - not nec. that your sil brought it for your daughter - althou I personally wouldn't buy that top for a 12 year old.

JoyeuxNoelBiggy · 21/12/2007 21:58

oh yuk.

YANBU. And well done your dd as well, seems there are plenty of 12 year olds that wear these manky, manky garments.

meemar · 21/12/2007 21:58

I think it's more outrageous that these things are actually produced for children.

Sadly the more mainstream they become, the more people don't think twice about buying them for a 12 year old.

80sMum · 21/12/2007 21:58

Tops with words on are so naff. I'll bet no self-respecting 12 year old with any taste would wear one anyway!

madamez · 21/12/2007 21:59

SHe's 12. It could have been a t-shirt that said 'smoke crack and worship satan' and she might have loved it. Things are only going to get even more entertaining.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 21/12/2007 22:01

yanbu great your dd has more sense then your sil what was she thinking!

mylovelymonster · 21/12/2007 22:09

YANBU. Utterly tasteless & revolting - the T-shirt. I don't know your sil....

seeker · 21/12/2007 22:20

You know, I think I would have been less outraged by "Smoke crack and worship Satan"

Next question, do I say anything to SIL about it - or do we just quietly lose it?

Use it for cleaning the car with!

Izzybel · 21/12/2007 22:41

Eugh I hate hate hate T-shirts with things like that on! It's like T-shirts with "babe" on, they're just chavvy and more often than not are worn by women that aren't babes, lol! Could you not tell her that it didn't fit, and ask if you could swap it? I wouldn't want my daughter wearing something like that either YANBU.

nametaken · 21/12/2007 22:45

just "quietly lose it" as you say and when you lose it make sure you erase the whole incident from your mind and never give it another seconds thought.

NappiesGaloriouslyFestive · 21/12/2007 22:46

i ahve no real outrage at the tshirt, i have to admit.

but is prob the last thing id actually wear.

and i would never have worn anything like it as a youngun. id havebeen mortified and scathing of its trying too hard utter shitness, tbh.

moljam · 21/12/2007 22:47

tanbu.i think id return it saying unsuitable, they may get worse yearly!

mylovelymonster · 21/12/2007 22:49

Reminds me of a colleague of mine who sometimes wears T-shirts with "massive tackle" and "for hire" on the front. Complete tool.......he thinks he's amusing............
Bought my hubby one which says "FCUK Fashion", which I thought quite cool - before they went crazy with "FCUK on the beach" and suchlike.......

madamez · 21/12/2007 23:02

As your DD doesnb't like it either, donate it to the local charity shop. But be prepared for your DD to wear clothes that you really really don't like for a while from now on . She's 12. That's a moderately late age to start pissing one's parents off with fashion choices...

"She's 12. That's a moderately late age to start pissing one's parents off with fashion choices..."

Interested by this, Madamez. So do you think I should have let her wear it if she had liked it?

I think 12 is still young enough for me to have a final veto over what she wears and buys - don't you? As I said, in the case of this t shirt, she didn't want to wear it anyway, but if she had, I wouldn't have let her. It's not a "fashion choice" in my opinion, it's a statement of an attitude that I find completely unacceptable - and one which I really don't want my daughter to have as part of her mental "furniture" if you see what I mean. I hate the fact that girls are still exposed to these hideous gender stereotypes as if they are normal. Or am I now over intellectualizing it?

I wouldn't give it to a charity shop, because that's just inviting some other child to hawk herself round as prostitute. Don't you need shoe cleaning cloths, car cleaning rags or something to mop up cat pee? Preferably when your sister in law's around.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 22/12/2007 13:14

you are most definitely not being unreasonable - vile things - what was your SIL thinking ? or not thinking - gah !

OrmIrian · 22/12/2007 13:18

Personally I'd prefer the crack and the satan motif...

glaskham · 22/12/2007 13:21

was it a childs size? or an adults size?....i'm outraged that they could possibly be made in childrens sizes....especially with 'men'...at least if it said boys it wouldn't be as bad....

ib · 22/12/2007 13:24

That's hideous. I was given a babygro for a newborn which said something like 'handsome future doctor seeks girl with rich daddy. Must like frogs and something or other' - can't remember exactly as it went straight in the bin!

NAB3hundredbaubles · 22/12/2007 15:35

Chocolate, shoes and shopping - fine. the rest, not.
