Neighbour's basketball hoop

Inspired by the clean washing in front garden thread from yesterday...

The back of our house, including our bedroom, backs onto neighbour's drive. Since Xmas day we have woken up to the sound of a football repeatedly bouncing. Thus....thud....thud.....thud..... They have bought the kids a basketball hoop and put it on the front drive. Yes, they have a back garden. AIBU to think this is a tad anti social? If it's relevant, when they had their extension built a few years ago they repeatedly allowed their workmen to block our drive, to the point where I had to go round there and lose my shit after not being able to get out for work for the billionth time. At the end of the VERY long build process they brought us a very cheap bottle of shitty wine to apologise for the inconvenience.

They're twats, aren't they??

for gods sake live and let live getting pathetic. Go and join in and have a laugh or watch them play. Miserable sods.

AmandaHoldensLips · 31/12/2021 14:47

100% twats.

Ball games are really fucking annoying, hence all those signs in communal residential areas saying NO BALL GAMES.

Idontevenknow · 31/12/2021 14:47

What time does it start?

Think it was about 9am this morning.

Most people put basketball hoops on the drive, though — or anywhere with a hard surface underneath, as they aren’t designed for grass. Ours is at the side of the house as it’s the only possible place for it, and although we have a big, wide garden, there are neighbours whose house backs back onto our side.

I think them blocking your drive when extending is a separate issue.

MrsFizziwig · 31/12/2021 14:48

The novelty will wear off and the basketball hoop will be permanently lying on its side within the month.

Let's hope we have a big fat storm which knocks it over very soon.

Our next door neighbours have a basketball hoop so I do understand how annoying that sound is.

But unfortunately I think they're entitled to put it where they want. Our neighbours' child used to bounce that fucking ball at 10pm over the summer! 😩

TheHoptimist · 31/12/2021 14:52

7 bloody years we had of this
Minimum 3 hours a day (4 boys)

Plus the ball coming over and them jumping our fence which eventually fell over

Maybe not — we gave DS one for Christmas 2020 (tussling with constructing the damn thing outdoors in the dark on Christmas Eve isn’t a memory that will leave me!’), and he’s played with it pretty consistently all year.
greenlynx · 31/12/2021 14:54

9 am, is it on weekdays? Our previous neighbour got at at the back garden, opposite DD’s bedroom and went out usually just before 8am, even on Sunday. So I would be lenient towards 9 am playing.

tiredofthisshit21 · 31/12/2021 14:57

Weekday yes, but non working day. If the ball comes over the fence it'll hit my car 😡

Onehotmessiah · 31/12/2021 14:57

They can make noise at 9am. If it was early/late I wouldn’t be thrilled but 9am is fair.

Horst · 31/12/2021 15:01

I mean the drive way is normally the most ideal place to put it due to hard ground. 9am on any day doesn’t seem a problem to me week day or weekend. 7/8am would be unreasonable.

VainAbigail · 31/12/2021 15:06

They're twats, aren't they??

Nope.

I think the issues from their builders is a separate issue and nothing to do with this.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 31/12/2021 15:07

You can't dribble a ball on grass. Needs to be on a hard surface.

Floralnomad · 31/12/2021 15:08

The people who live behind us ( garden to garden ) have placed their basketball hoop against the back fence so every time he misses the hoop the ball lands in our garden - idiots !

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 31/12/2021 15:09

God I couldn't get worked up about this.

DeepaBeesKit · 31/12/2021 15:12

Eh? Basketball hoops are supposed to go over the drive way. One will be going over our garage just as soon as DS is old enough

Croleeen · 31/12/2021 15:19

I told my son he could only bounce for less than an hour at a time and not after about 6 or 7pm as the neighbours had young children. I also old them if it ever got annoying to ask him to stop. It's a really annoying sound. YANBU

woodlandarchitect · 31/12/2021 15:23

Hmmmm you’re a little harsh. If you can’t beat them - join them!

Go and have a bounce off Grin

The builders blocking you in is a separate issue. And at least they got you wine to apologise. It could have easily been nothing at all and no apology.

They sound like decent people tbh! If you don’t like neighbours then maybe move to a isolated location Wink

Nodancingshoes · 31/12/2021 15:24

I remember playing Tennis against the wall in my driveway between mine and my neighbours house when I was young...bet they hated me 😂😂😂😂

I played against our side wall for hours on end. Back then I thought the noise would have driven my dad mad and he'd have asked me to stop. But he never did. Many years later I discovered the neighbour had complained about me making noise. The neighbours had 3 sets of bunkbeds (6 kids) in the bedroom next to my parents room and my dad had apparently asked them to move the bunkbeds from against the wall to prevent the constant banging as the kids messed about, moved, breathed, etc. They'd refused, so my dad thought it was fair game to let me play tennis as much as I liked.
lanthanum · 31/12/2021 15:33

I think if it's outside your bedroom, it wouldn't be that unreasonable to explain that and ask whether they can wait until after you've opened your bedroom curtains in the morning (or something like 9.30am on weekends/bank holidays). Asking today might be a good move, if you're going to be sleeping in tomorrow morning!

Hankunamatata · 31/12/2021 15:34

I banned basketball (yep I'm mean mum) as couldn't cope with thud. Footballs out the back have to be light ones so they dont make a racket or damage anything if they go over. DC now retreat to the local park or green
