I hate the term twixmas but AIBU to wonder what you're all doing with your children in this period between Christmas and them returning to school?

What is twixmas? Where you eat nothing but twixes?

00100001 · 31/12/2021 09:14

I call it the doldrums.

Ohshittt · 31/12/2021 09:14

I have seen 'Twixmas' a lot recently and don't have a clue 🤔

SlowBoiledFrog · 31/12/2021 09:14

@Curlyreine

What is twixmas? Where you eat nothing but twixes?
I could do that but unfortunately every other sod has eaten then so only left with bountys... bountmas?
GTAlogic · 31/12/2021 09:16

I call it crimbo limbo lol but my dc, 9 & 10, play with their friends, play with or use their Christmas presents, read, watch TV or YouTube on their phones or play on the PlayStation. A bit like me really. On Monday or Tuesday, just before going back to school, we're going to town so they can spend some of their Xmas money.

LagunaBubbles · 31/12/2021 09:17

Never heard the word twixmas before, pretty glad I don't know anyone that uses it either!

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 31/12/2021 09:18

Not the point of the thread, but it is not 'twixmas' - it's still Christmas until 6 January.

hivemindneeded · 31/12/2021 09:19

DC are now at uni but when they were little we'd go out on a muddy winter hike for one day, have rellies round or visit them another day, go into London to see a matinee one day and another London day to look at a museum or gallery, the lights and sights.
We'd have a couple of days really focused on their main presents - eg go out to a disused airfield to let DS ride his go cart at top speed, or sit with instructions and help with complex Lego builds etc.
We might do some baking, play lots of board games and charades.
We'd do a local visit to an NT or RHS garden and house, that involved a lot of walking. If it's fine enough bike rides, if not, a swim at a local outdoor pool - always lovely in winter.

Some winters we'd have a long weekend away - Paris, Reyjavik, Euro Disneyland or a trip to distant relatives etc.

LordEmsworth · 31/12/2021 09:19

If you hate the term, you don't have to use it and you've used it twice Confused.

"AIBU to wonder what you're all doing with your children in this period between Christmas and them returning to school?" would have been perfectly ok. Though it's still Christmas as far as I am concerned... 25th December is the FIRST day of Christmas so today I am waiting for my swans Grin

parentpanic · 31/12/2021 09:21

Whatever you want to call it the question remains the same...

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 31/12/2021 09:22

If you "hate the term twixmas", don't use it. It's unnecessary when "Christmas holidays" is sufficient.

We have play dates, shopping with Christmas present money, playgrounds, crazy golf, theme park and a family visit planned. Currently he's playing with trucks.

girlmom21 · 31/12/2021 09:22

Surely you do the same things as all the other school holidays...?

Bloballbovish · 31/12/2021 09:23

Aren't you just doing stuff you'd usually do in school holidays and weekends? A few trips out to places you like to go, a bit of time watching TV, films, reading, doing and craft things they say they like and got for Christmas and you end up doing the brunt of.

Interspersed with a lot of biscuit and mince pie eating because yet again you misjudged the amount you'd need. Well, that's the excuse anyway.

WakeUpLockie · 31/12/2021 09:24

This is why you give craft/activity sets at Christmas 😄 my friend gives gift bags of baker Ross stuff and it’s soooo well received! We’ve done movies, playgrounds/walks, and crafts for the whole week basically haha.

TreeLawney · 31/12/2021 09:24

What we normally do in a holiday. Enjoying catching up with friends and family, nice walks, couple of quieter days pottering at home & enjoying Christmas pressies.

WinoLino · 31/12/2021 09:24

Don't usually enjoy it much but we are having fun playing games and taking them to do stuff. Today we are doing indoor crazy golf! Making the most of being off work and school

GiraffeDancer · 31/12/2021 09:27

We’ve spent some time seeing relatives, going for walks or out to ride bikes etc, spent time at home either letting them just chill out and watch films/YouTube/ gaming, played some board games, they’ve played with their presents, all gone to bed late and got up late. The Christmas food rules of eat whatever you fancy (within reason) are still in force too, until tomorrow!

NothingIsWrong · 31/12/2021 09:27

I'm treating nits today. Happy NYE!

No clue where they have come from, but I have them as well...

WakeUpLockie · 31/12/2021 09:27

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

Technically, but then the kids are back at school during Christmas ?? 4 Jan here.
LivesinLondon2000 · 31/12/2021 09:31

My DC normally do sports camps in the other holidays or meet up with friends but this week is pretty much the only holiday week in the year that there are no camps running and friends often tend to be away/doing family stuff. So for me this week is very different to other school holidays.

We’ve been just trying to get out every day either to a museum or for a bike ride, lunch out etc (thankfully eating out is possible unlike this week last year which was really miserable!!). But I have always hated this week, the excitement of the Christmas build up is over, the weather isn’t great and not much daylight and many things are shut until the New Year. Can totally understand why people go away on holiday this week

2TurtleDovesInARow · 31/12/2021 09:31

Wow some people are so aggressive. Are you this grumpy in real life?!

We have a 13yo and a 2yo (and a newborn). Have been going to a national trust property for a walk most afternoons, getting through the films on iPlayer and Netflix, playing with new toys (sewing machine in case of 13yo)...and just counting down the days until nursery and school starts again Grin

HipHopBanzai · 31/12/2021 09:37

I absolutely love these days between Christmas and New Year. We're fortunate that neither DH or I have had to work over Christmas this year. Kids have sat and played with toys, watched telly and we've been out for a decent muddy walk every day. We'd normally travel around to see friends or family, or have them come to visit us. We've all been more cautious this year, so there's been lots of outdoor meet ups and walks instead.

GinGinItsAWonderfulThing · 31/12/2021 09:41

Eating, walking, kids stayed over at friends, clearing house for builders, working.

I am envious of everyone who finds it a bit boring because we are having a ‘not enough hours in the fucking day’ time of it right now, which I’m sure will pass at some point.

RobinPenguins · 31/12/2021 09:43

We have an “active” 4 year old so have been swimming, to soft play, out on shit rainy bike rides, to a National Trust place, art gallery, playground, relatives’ houses, and will do more of the same until nursery reopens.

I fucking dream of being able to lie on the sofa and read my Christmas books.

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2021 09:45

Well, yes the kids go back to school while it's still Christmas- at Catholic schools they sing We Three Kings on the 6th January.

Usually at this time of year we visit family.
