How often do you have your phone on you when you're just at home?

blablablablablablablabla · 30/12/2021 09:29

When out and about and busy, I don't have my phone on me much and can miss calls / messages.

When in the house, I tend to have my phone near by. In the event there should be an important call etc. And just generally

What do you do ? Do you ever just not have your phone on you for the whole day, even if you're at home, doing nothing ?

@AuntieMarys

blablabla why would I need to talk to a health professional?
Most People Need to talk to one, once in a while... it's not that unusual.

My phone is always in my pocket at home or in my bag or coat when out. I never don’t have my phone in reach.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 30/12/2021 10:13

I frequently don't even know where my phone is when I'm in the house, when I'm out it's with me, surely that's the point of a mobile that they are useful when you are mobile...

burnoutbabe · 30/12/2021 10:13

My Fitbit vibrates with texts and calls so I can easily tell if I get a message and phone is in other room. And run to answer if it's someone i want to speak to.

(Just to add we don't have a landline, well no phone connected to it, haven't for years, I don't know anyone who does!)

We have a landline because it came with the house, and we needed it for the internet. I know more people than not with a landline phone. It doesn't ring much though, sometimes it's nice to have a call without a delay, or losing signal to be honest!

AuntieMarys · 30/12/2021 10:17

blanla why would a health professional randomly ring me? If I was expecting a call then fair enough. Do you get regularly calls from them?

userisi2 · 30/12/2021 10:17

@CaptainCabinets Grin

Cocolapew · 30/12/2021 10:17

My phone is always nearby in the house, I don't have a landline. My Dad had terminal cancer so I was getting a lot of calls from Drs/district nurses etc from June until his death in October. I still haven't got out of the habit of panicking when it rings Hmm.
I also use my phone from reading so it's pretty much always in my hand if I'm sitting down.

Yeah so I get the impression in real life that people who don't have their phone on them or don't know where they leave it for days on end, somehow think they're superior or something.

I got the impression from your post that you don't answer to numbers you don't recognise. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Incidentally I do get random calls from health care professionals sometimes and sometimes I am expecting the calls. It really depends in my case.

I quite often have no idea where it is and have to use find my iPhone to locate it. I don’t use it all that much in the house.

thegcatsmother · 30/12/2021 10:23

The mobile signal is not good where I live, so we use landlines at home. I don't have a smartphone either, so just use mine for calls/texts. It is switched off at work, and I forget to switch it back on, so wouldn't use it at home. It's not about competitive under use or feeling superior; it's just that I don't use my mobile much.

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2021 10:24

I'm on my laptop downstairs, my mobile is upstairs.

DressingPafe · 30/12/2021 10:25

Well for one, I am posting via my iPad which I mentioned being on several times a day in my post. For two, why the need to turn nasty? You asked the question and people answered. It’s so annoying on MN when everything is labelled “competitive” eating, phone use, etc etc. maybe some people just don’t need their phone as much as you. It’s nothing to do with feeling superior.

out the house phone in bag

in the house, phone on worktop in the kitchen at all times

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2021 10:32

How about long car journeys? Always answer? I have hands free but I keep anything very short, I don't really like using it unless i have to.

Not mine!
lottiegarbanzo · 30/12/2021 10:34

I find the idea of not being available for a chat within 8 hours, being interpreted as some kind of cause for concern, extraordinary. That's a normal working day. Sometimes people go out for the evening and are unavailable to talk. Surely any sensible person would leave a message and understand that you'll respond at your earliest convenience, which might be later that day, or might be the next day.

Sparklingbrook · 30/12/2021 10:34

I might be a dinosaur posting from my laptop but I don't think i'm the only one. Lazy assumption that everyone posts from their phones.

TheSpiral · 30/12/2021 10:37

I don’t think it’s rude not being available on my mobile for 8 hours - or in my case 48 hours sometimes, my phone is often out of battery and I’m not sure where it is right this moment. If anyone wants me they can contact me on my landline, which I vastly prefer, or by Facebook if they really must.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/12/2021 10:37

But to answer your question, I can usually hear my phone but sometimes not, if it's in another room. If I'm expecting a call I'll carry it in a pocket.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/12/2021 10:39

Yes, not posting from a phone either. So called phones are not the only type of computer available!

TheSpiral · 30/12/2021 10:39

I don’t think it’s about feeling superior - I think it is more a reaction to this feeling on the part of those who have their phones with them all the time that it is wrong and rude not to be like them. I don’t think I have an obligation to check WhatsApp every hour/ day.
