in thinking sainsburys did not explain properly re xmas beef?

I spent over £20 on a 30 days matured taste the difference beef joint for xmas day from sainsburys. My guests in their 80s had not eaten outside their home since pre covid so i wanted it to be nice and they preferred this to turkey.

There was no mention of any cooking instructions on the outer packaging. When i opened it on xmas day i found it had to be cooked in liquid and was not the roast I expected. Googling silverside i can see that all silverside is recommended to be cooked this way otherwise it is tough but i had no idea. All the silverside joints were mixed in the cabinet with rump joints as each was individually priced. I never even considered there would be a difference and as it was such an expensive joint I just presumed it was a a traditional roast. It was labelled "British beef silverside joint".

AIBU to think Sainsburys should have explained this on the packaging as surely I am not the only person who doesnt know this. I wouldnt normally have beef except for the visitors.

Come again?

unexpectedthird · 29/12/2021 22:05

I've said YABU as really it's your responsibility to know what you are buying. It was clearly labelled.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 29/12/2021 22:07

That is definitely something i'd expect to be printed on the outer packaging, i wouldn't have known it needed different method to a rump roast joint.

NoSquirrels · 29/12/2021 22:07

You bought a clearly labelled silverside joint of beef. There was rump available but you bought the silverside.

Googling instructions on how to cook it, you discovered it’s best to cook in liquid.

What’s your AIBU?

cloudtree · 29/12/2021 22:07

Cooking instructions on joints are generally on the reverse of the label. But generally yes you are being unreasonable to expect cooking instructions for a raw ingredient

Sparklespangle · 29/12/2021 22:07

Yabu, learn how to cook before buying food. It is not Sainsbury's job to educate you in how to cook different cuts of meat

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 29/12/2021 22:08

Just do a vegan Christmas dinner next year.

Or just read the label, at the very least.

00100001 · 29/12/2021 22:08

Why would they have cooking instructions on the packet? Confused

Also...you can just roast it...

plinkplinkfizzer · 29/12/2021 22:09

If you don't know your meat maybe you would be best in future to use a Butcher who can tell you about different cuts of meat . Rookie mistake .

NoSquirrels · 29/12/2021 22:09

AIBU to think Sainsburys should have explained this on the packaging

Sorry - this is your AIBU.

So yes - YABVU!

The packaging gave you cooking instructions- in liquid.

What did you want, the packaging to say “This is NOT rump, you need to cook it differently”? Confused

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/12/2021 22:10

They should have written a big fat warning label in red with flashing lights.

StrongerOrWeaker · 29/12/2021 22:10

This is a mistake I could have made! Considering they even put directions on how to eat kiwi, they could have done the same for this..... Now would you have read it before making the purchase or would you have assumed you knew? ;)

TheUndoingProject · 29/12/2021 22:11

I think it’s your responsibility to know what you’re buying. Should they put cooking instructions on carrots??

Tricked2003 · 29/12/2021 22:11

You can't blame the shop because you bought a joint you didn't know how to cook!

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 29/12/2021 22:12

YABU . £20 would just buy you a good rump steak for two where I live! Go to a butcher next time and ask their advice!

elelel · 29/12/2021 22:12

Googling silverside i can see that all silverside is recommended to be cooked this way otherwise it is tough but i had no idea.

Right, so what was the problem? It was cooked in liquid as it should have been.

Lockheart · 29/12/2021 22:12

I've never cooked silverside in liquid in my life. It's an excellent roasting joint.

DockOTheBay · 29/12/2021 22:13

Whats the problem? Just cook it in liquid and then eat it.

NoSquirrels · 29/12/2021 22:13

Do you often buy meat joints?

Pork shoulder, pork loin and gammon are all sold packaged pretty much the same. You need to know what you want to cook before you go shopping.

Lamb shoulder, leg of lamb and lamb loin etc.

Camelflage · 29/12/2021 22:14

I've roasted silverside in the normal way lots of times, it is tougher than topside but still comes out fine cooked low and slow. I actually think reading the label is where you went wrong! If you'd just chucked it in as planned it would have been fine and you would have been none the wiser Smile

emailaddressplease · 29/12/2021 22:15

I had this exact beef from Sainsbury's and didn't read the label Grin. I cooked it how I cook all my other beef.

I cooked it the day before and carved and the next day I put it in the slow cooker in gravy to make it even more tender. It was lovely.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 29/12/2021 22:16

I made this mistake about 40 years ago only in my case I didn't even look up how to cook silverside just put it in the oven. It was horrible, dry and chewy. I didn't blame the butcher back then and I don't think you can blame the supermarket now. At least there were instructions inside!

We each bought the wrong thing through our lack of knowledge . It isn't up to the shop to nanny us and check we will know how to cook a product when we get it home (although I'm sure the butcher would have told me if I had asked him, he was a very nice man).

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 29/12/2021 22:16

I don't think it's unreasonable that they print something like "For slow-cooking/braising" on the outside of the pack. Not everyone knows these things.

romany4 · 29/12/2021 22:16

I've always done beef joints in my slow cooker.
It's not difficult

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 29/12/2021 22:17

Yalu, it’s down to your lack of cookery skills, not Sainsbury who advise how to cook the joint on their cookery instructions.
