Handhold please - dd in hospital

Just posting for traffic.

Dd age 3 woke up with a bad stomach pain last night just after going to bed. It didn't ease so rang 111 and they sent us to hospital to get checked for uti etc.

Her urine test flagged up a few things, one being her sugar. Her blood sugar was 9.8, she hadn't eaten anything for about 4/5 hours at that point. So we've been kept in so they can re do in the morning.

I'm just so scared she's diabetic. She doesn't have any of the classic symptoms but I'm so worried. The Dr said it can be a stress response sometimes but they're concerned because it was also in her urine.

Just sitting here in the dark scared for my baby girl. Has anyone else had this and been OK?

Sending hugs. Awful for you both fingers crossed it's nothing serious

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/12/2021 05:30

Oh bless her. ❤️

Doctor has been round again and this time dd was asleep enough to not tense up when she was feeling her tummy. She said no lumps or bumps and though she did stir it wasn't at the same place twice so she's happy to rule out what she said were nasty things like appendicitis.

Just waiting for dd to wake up and hopefully she will need a wee. Then they'll do bloods again. The doctor seemed much more relieved after that visit about the cause of the pain.

She has had constipation in the past but the Dr has said her tummy was soft. It's definitely a possibility though, she often tries to hold poos in.

Thank you again for your messages, it's made me feel less alone

That sounds relatively reassuring. Hopefully it is just constipation / holding her poos then.

godmum56 · 29/12/2021 06:20

Sending you a handhold. Have been up all night here too with old dog who wouldn't settle. So glad you have had some good news and hoping for more good news for you in the morning. You are in the best place.

TimeForTheChristmasTree · 29/12/2021 06:29

Best wishes OP, hope you are both home soon.

ThirdElephant · 29/12/2021 06:36

Hope it's nothing major and you're both home soon.

Nat6999 · 29/12/2021 06:53

Ds was like that once & it was really bad constipation, he was sent because our GP thought it was appendicitis, he had pain & a high temperature. He was given an enema when everything else was ruled out & I have never seen so much poo, he blocked the toilet & it just wouldn't stop coming out for about 2 days, I had to buy pull ups as he was having accidents.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 29/12/2021 07:01

Just to say sometimes blood sugar is a bit of a red herring, in my experience. My baby had a UTI/sepsis and this was somewhat overlooked initially due to his glucose being a very worryingly low level (despite him having just eaten!) - the glucose was monitored and was just a bizarre blip. I hope everything is alright and it’s constipation or something

blinder · 29/12/2021 07:35

Hope things are going okay this morning and that you get to go home and rest later

MerryChristmas21 · 29/12/2021 07:44

I hope it's something temporary like constipation.

But try not to stress, if it's Diabetes, it's manageable.

Mind you, so is having your appendix out. Keyhole surgery & short recovery time.

Let us know how you get on this morning x

Purplemoon54 · 29/12/2021 07:58

It might have been mentioned but I think blood sugar can increase with an infection? My blood sugar was once 12 point something when I had a UTI/ kidney infection, they did diabetes tests following that reading but all okay. Either way your dd will be well looked after and you’ll have a lot of support.

Sellingstress · 29/12/2021 08:16

Hi OP - just to echo what others have said, high blood sugar can be a response to an infection. My son had this when he had flu when his urine was tested. Sent to hospital, second set of blood sugars were fine a few hours later.

Notsomerryandbright · 29/12/2021 08:46

We've had the prick test done and it was 5.7, so normal range. Such a massive relief, I was so worried all night.

Just waiting for DD to produce another urine sample to be cultured and then I think we will be good to go. She seems a little bit perkier, sat up with a slice of toast and watching blippi.

Thank you all again, it was a long night

Has she been ill recently with a cold or cough? My daughter was recently diagnosed with mesenteric lymphadenitis which started the same way as your daughter.

Notsomerryandbright · 29/12/2021 08:57

She did have a cold a week and a half ago, wasn't covid, but she did have a runny nose, watery eyes etc. I'll ask if it could be related

Same here. Negative covid tests, but she ended up with pneumonia. Then this severe stomach pain started 1.5 weeks ago. We were worried about appendix, and got her in to the gp as an emergency. I had never heard of mesenteric lymphadenitis but it seems a lot of children are getting it this year after a cold bug as 2 more of my friends kids have.
Riverlee · 29/12/2021 09:25

Wishing you well.

Mamamia344 · 29/12/2021 09:30

I hope she feels better this morning - It's always so worrying when they're poorly.

I've had a few scares with my 3 year old as he kept fainting but so far tests haven't shown anything conclusive.

I had no idea entering into motherhood how frightening it would be at times and the worry, ugh... it's just too much sometimes x

godmum56 · 29/12/2021 09:37

Glad to hear you have much better news.

Frarnces · 29/12/2021 09:47

My daughter had mesenteric lymphadenitis and we were worried it was appendicitis. They diagnosed it because she had a red ear and we were pretty confused! Taking Buscopan Cramps with painkiller made all the difference - we kept her tipped up for it to be most effective. She still had stomach pain but it was manageable with it.

Funnylittlefloozie · 29/12/2021 09:49

No advice, but I am glad she's doing better today. Hope you will be able to go home soon.

Notsomerryandbright · 29/12/2021 09:56

Couldn't agree more @Mamamia344 it's wonderful and terrifying all in one go.

We've been given some colouring in sheets to do so dd is happy with that

My friends. Daughter got diagnosed at 3.

She’s a champ at the whole thing. It’s hard to get the hang on. But carb counting gets easier. She says she can’t even feel the needles now.

She does so well!

Notsomerryandbright · 30/12/2021 19:54

Just to let you all know dd was let home yesterday afternoon, and we both slept 13 hours last night! The consultant came round and said it does sound like she's got a uti due to the temp, pain and raised blood sugar so she prescribed some antibiotics while we wait for the culture to come back.

She had a look around her urethra and said there was some redness and recommended some cedar (sp?) Cream, I've been googling but not sure what that is so I'll get on to the pharmacist tomorrow.

And lastly we've got some lactulose as the consultant thought she could also be constipated.

Dd hasn't had a temp all day, and has been starting to be her usual cheeky self so seems to be on the mend.
