To be really concerned about energy prices

Idontlikeworms · 28/12/2021 18:46

I have locked my deal I until 2023 but paying so much more now. I work with vulnerable adults. Most can not afford heating now and are on pre payment meters. What the f is going to happen when the prices increase by 50% ?? It's horrible.

For me, heating when necessary, temp usually around 18c , I use thermals, then normal layers, sometimes a dressing gown on top,

Electric, only use what's needed, no unnecessary lights left on, don't use a tumble dryer instead use clothes horse, ect

Brogues · 28/12/2021 19:19

We have solar panels and really optimise our usages with timers and heating sources so not massively worried for myself but I can see so many folks aren’t going to be able to afford this winter with the bills I’ve been seeing.

This is what's coming up for me.

dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 19:23

Thats a business tariff not domestic

dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 19:24

And its a fixed tariff

GiveMeMyKeys · 28/12/2021 19:29

@MaryAndHerNet

Why are you looking at fixed rates? We all know that you at the moment the best thing is the cap tariff.

You're right. Seems they're only showing my ones called business. dang it I'll just call them when I need to and try not to worry till then.. I still am tho.
MaryAndHerNet · 28/12/2021 19:32

Well I'm.going to

octopus.energy/tariffs/
Putting in postcode
Scrolling through and they all say business, which I didn't notice until just up there.

Am not a good internet user type, so I've probably done something wrong somewhere.

This is what I get on octopus, it actually tells you not to fix at the moment. I'm pretty impressed that they are protecting people who've missed all the messaging about this

"You need to know this 👇

Right now, energy prices are at record highs, and most homes will be better off staying with their current energy supplier for the winter.

If your fixed term is coming to an end, don't choose a new tariff or switch supplier.

Instead, let your supplier automatically move you to their default tariff, so your prices are protected by the Government's Energy Price Cap"

MaryAndHerNet · 28/12/2021 19:38

@GiveMeMyKeys
I get that if I click get a quote.

Stellaris22 · 28/12/2021 19:42

We have our heating on the lowest setting possible and it's more than adequate, our 9 year old never complains about being cold. It's off at night and she just gets n with us when she does feel the cold.

But it's ridiculous the energy crisis has got to this point. DH is in the industry and been researching the codes and policies for rationing, it's scary.

Gas intensive industries need shutting down, people quite rightfully can't be told not to heat their homes.

GalaPie · 28/12/2021 19:43

I currently pay Octopus £250 a month on flexible, and these are the current tariffs for me 😳

Is there something odd with Octopus? Those are quotes for a fixed tariff not flexible and to be pedantic that's not a tariff it's a cost estimate. Do you have the actual tariff rates?

You will be better off on the variable rate

Aurea · 28/12/2021 19:53

@Stellaris22

Can you please share more about these codes and practices? Could there be black outs?

I ask as I'm wondering whether to invest in an expensive power bank as we have a home-based business and need power to function.

Also does anyone know how any potential blackouts would work. Do they shut off entire streets at a time? We have a hospital at the end of our road which may give us some reprieve if this is the case.

Stellaris22 · 28/12/2021 20:00

It depends on how bad this government lets it get, but it has to be really bad to get to rationing. As far as I know it's done by post code and only done if we don't shut down heavy industries first.

We have our supplies for if we can only cook on our camping gas hob, so I wouldn't say don't prepare.

Kitkat151 · 28/12/2021 20:05

My last monthly bill was £189 and the really cold months are yet to come

dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 20:09

Octopus emailed me with my options. This is what they showed for the flexible tariff

@GalaPie £250 still seems quite high a month even without the hike. What are people's averages atm? I think I should put in my readings as we were moved to Shell when our company went under, hope its nothing shocking!

That's only if you fix. You're better off staying on the flexible tariff

Thank you, my fixed rate ends in a couple of months and it's helpful for me to have an idea for budgeting. I'm not with Octopus and I know the ratesvary by region but that's a good guide. A hefty increase on what I pay now so time to start saving up a bit
stairgates · 28/12/2021 20:14

Just logged in to my account and am -£450 from being +£150 on move the other month Confused

dementedpixie · 28/12/2021 20:15

Have you been making payments in the months where you were being moved?

How do you know that's high? The poster hasn't posted her tariff or usage so it's impossible to make any judgement.

It doesn't matter what anyone else pays, as long as you have the lowest tariff you can get and control your usage you will pay the lowest £££ for you.

MaryAndHerNet · 28/12/2021 20:21

"It doesn't matter what anyone else pays, as long as you have the lowest tariff you can get and control your usage you will pay the lowest £££ for you."

Yep. I'm using about 5 kWh a day atm. I think we must be the only people that still haven't put heating on, that don't have on demand hot water or put the immersion heater on etc.

Anythingbutsnow · 28/12/2021 20:23

We have just moved to octopus. One thing I like about them is that you can put both meter readings in and they will generate a bill immediately, which can be paid immediately. I'm planning to do this weekly so I can really keep on top of what I'm using and pay straight away if I can.
