To prefer a vented tumble dryer over a condenser?

Yabu - condensers are fine if not better
Yanbu - vented ones are way better

Mum recommends vented...

What you actually want is a heat pump IMHO, I love ours, and uses SO much less power.

WeaninWoes · 28/12/2021 10:16

@GuckGuckDoose....I'm after a dryer not a heating source and an unbearably hot house?

I prefer my condenser, but only because we have plumbed it in so the water drains away.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 28/12/2021 10:19

We replaced our vented one with a heat pump condenser, but we did have reservations about it at the time.

Have to say that I have none now. We save energy and the water tray is very conveniently placed at the top left of the machine - it's absolutely no bother to pull it out and empty it when it's full.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/12/2021 10:21

I have a heat pump one as well.
It doesn't make the room warm.
I got it in 2017 or 2018, and it works well, although takes a long time.

She means a heat pump drier.

We have one and it is better than a vented or condenser.

It doesn’t heat the house anymore than a vented tumble would.

A heat pump condenser is a type of tumble dryer which uses less energy. It's not a heat source, it doesn't make your house hotter and it dries your clothes more gently (although the drying time is slightly longer).

@ChocolateDeficitDisorder & @Marmite27 ah OK thanks

We got a condenser to replace a basic 20 YO vented that still worked but the hose had rotted and there was a dead spot in the timer so you had to advance past manually.

The new one is unbelievably shit and I regret not sticking with the old one.

Wagsandclaws · 28/12/2021 10:36

I couldn't believe how much condensers have come on - I have a Hoover one and the water collects in the door. It's a lot easier and less messy than a vented one and it does the job just as well.

Love our AEG condenser tumble drier, it’s been years since I had a vented though so hard to compare. It auto adjusts to how dry the washing is and finishes when the load is dry, massive bonus over previous ones we’ve had. We have a very cold house and it doesn’t produce the heat that our previous one did which is a shame. My parents have a 20+ year old vented and it takes same time to dry but I suspect uses a lot more electric.

toomuchlaundry · 28/12/2021 10:55

Hated our old condenser dryer, never seemed to dry the clothes and the utility room felt like a sauna! Went back to vented

Floralnomad · 28/12/2021 11:02

The main thing is can you actually vent it where you want to put it . We always had a vented dryer until the start of this year and we’re very happy with it but then reconfigured the space and where the dryer was going it wasn’t possible to vent it . We went for a condenser ( Bosch) and it works brilliantly and dries very quickly , we considered a heat pump but the long drying time put me off .

santaclothes · 28/12/2021 11:50

It's not really an AIBU - personal choice, surely?

I have a condenser but I don't think anyone is U for having vented.

Stormsy · 28/12/2021 12:00

I preferred a vented but ours needed replacing so I opted for a heat pump condenser due to the £ savings. It takes longer, but it doesn't heat the room and senses when the clothes are dry and stops/adjusts it's timings. The water collects at the front and is easy to get rid of and it has a double filter for the fluff.

Daftasabroom · 28/12/2021 12:12

Energy costs are set double this year, why would you choose an inefficient vented dryer over a heat pump condenser?

Scarlettpixie · 28/12/2021 12:12

I have a condenser but it takes ages to dry stuff from wet. I mostly use it to finish things off ir knock the creases out.

I thought vented were better but need to be on an outside wall? Ours isn’t.

DopesickSis · 28/12/2021 12:52

We have just changed form an ancient condenser dryer to a new Samsung heat pump condenser and the difference is incredible.

Clothes are gently dried rather than blasted with a high heat. The 'fluffy towels' setting is epic.

There's an app to alert you when the cycle is finished and to tell you if laundry needs more drying time, you can add time via the app so no need to go and check the laundry.

Although it's a condenser, you can plumb it in so the collected water drains out rather than have to empty a container.

I was being cheeky trying to use a poll to make a decision Grin

Good point. Until starting this thread I'd never even heard of a heat pump condenser 😂

We have a heat pump drier too. Takes longer, costs less and causes far less condensation and is kinder to your clothes.

It's great that MN has told you something in you didn't even know you didn't know 🤣

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 28/12/2021 13:31

I have both, both Miele machines. In our main house it's a vented one but we have a small flat too. The only space for a dryer was in the bedroom and so it had to be a condenser. The vented one seems a little quicker but there isn't much in it.

ipswichwitch · 28/12/2021 13:38

I have a vented as we keep it in the garage and it’s not recommended for either condenser of heat pump dryers to be kept in cold areas. We did struggle a bit with getting a new one a couple of months ago - nobody had any in stock - but I’m impressed with this one. It has sensors so it stops when the clothes are dry, and multiple settings for different fabrics.

plm456 · 28/12/2021 13:46

Tangential but I'd go for one with a non sensor option. I only realised our mistake after our new one arrived and I read some more reviews online. We're a bit unusual in hanging washing outside or inside on radiators so only use the tumble dryer to finish damp things off if needed.

Every time I put my damp washing in the dryer for a 10-15 minute blast, the sensor deemed it dry and turned it straight off. Our machine had a 10 minute override option but only on a cool setting that didn't dry anything either. Drove me sufficiently mad to return the new tumble dryer and buy a bog standard (vented) dryer with an old fashioned timer dial and no sensor. Appreciate these may be useful if you put your wet washing straight from the washing machine into the dryer.

ChristmasFluff · 28/12/2021 14:12

I'd love a vented one, but my situation is such that I cannot have one. The condensing one is ok, but.... not as good as my old vented one.

And this one has a sensor too - definitely a major nuisance

NdujaWannaDance · 28/12/2021 14:12
