Yabu - condensers are fine if not better
Yanbu - vented ones are way better

Mum recommends vented...

Not sure how your opinion on an appliance could be unreasonable.

Ceramide · 28/12/2021 14:29

I have never encountered a condensing dryer which didn't leave a burnt smell on the clothes.

The heat pump dryers most definitely do not, they're cooler and gentler.

Heat pump condenser, plumber in so water drains away. Your mum is out of date

I got a new vented drier recently. They're quite hard to get hold of as most manufacturers have stopped making them but AEG still make them. They're much cheaper to buy than heat pump driers. Obviously when this one dies, I'll have to get a heat pump one but right now I'd prefer the convenience of clothes thwt dry more quickly.

@Sonex
Your mum is out of date
Understatement of the decade 😂😂😂

@Clymene that's what I was thinking, cheap initial cost, faster dried clothes.....but then someone minded me about energy price hikes Sad

I never knew about the different types of tumble dryer. Mine is an integrated washer dryer. What method does that tumble drying use?

Bytheseaseasea · 28/12/2021 20:03

We just redid our kitchen and kept our old vented drier. We debated getting a condenser (so we could put the drier in a different place). The kitchen guy said that he’s just bought a condenser drier and they can be pretty good but generally are more expensive.

Heat pump dryer here. It’s plumbed in so no emptying water either. Just use it easily like the washing machine.

WeaninWoes · 28/12/2021 20:34

@blueshoes I think it's condenser?

This is a very timely thread.

I have the same vented tumble drier I bought from Argos when I moved into my first house 20 years ago. I remember it was the cheapest one they sold. It still works beautifully and far better than any condenser dryer I’ve used in the various holiday homes we’ve stayed in over the years.

DH insists we need to replace it with a modern energy efficient dryer. I think that’s an awful way to repay it for its years of good service and we should wait until it dies a natural death or catches on fire We’re on a green energy tariff and surely any savings, both environmental and monetary, will be offset by the cost of the new machine?

I use the washing line or heated airer + dehumidifier for most our clothes, so I only really need one for towels, bed linens and the pants and socks I can’t be bothered to hang to dry…

ittakes2 · 28/12/2021 20:55

I have one of each. Condensor is quicker and better for bedding - vented only goes one way and bedding gets all twisted together. Although strangely I still prefer my vented.

Thanks, Weanin

I never had to plumb anything in or empty a tray or use a vent because I guess the washer dryer was already plumbed in because of the washer part of it. It is not great but helps to kick off the drying for large items. I finish it off with air drying or on a heated rail.

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/12/2021 20:58

Plumbed in heat pump model here (bosch) and although it's not super fast it is otherwise excellent and doesn't ruin clothes so I can put up with the longer drying time.

PureBlackVoid · 28/12/2021 21:01

I have an old front vented dryer which I love. It’s so simple to use, doesn’t overheat the room, compact as there’s no hose to faff around with, no water collecting anywhere. The only maintenance needed is to clear the fluff from door every few goes.

I don’t know if they are widely available now though, I’ll be gutted when this one stops working.
