To expect to be able to find out how much a new car key is?

When the websites for the car manufacturer, locksmiths etc. all mention 'transparent pricing'? But none have even indicative ballpark prices.

I have lost my car key and am stuck at my parents until I get a new key or my spare one couriered to me. Couriers say over £300 and not till Friday.

Does anyone know how much approx a new car key is. Hyundai if that makes a difference?

Thank you.

I think I have that cover with my bank account/car insurance. Have you checked that first before you pay anyone?

Scarby9 · 28/12/2021 09:20

@MichelleScarn
That never occurred to me, I am ashamed to say. Too much of a panic here. Thank you.

@Youdoyoutoday
Thank you.
That's the kind of website I'm looking at, but no visible price ( not even 'prices from'). I'll start ringing round again now. Most local ones had Bank Holiday messages on yesterday, so I hope they aren't taking today as well.🤞

Usually a car key with a built-in fob that locks and unlocks is around £150 and takes up to a week, IME.

Depends why it needs replacing, DH left his keys (all of them 🤦‍♀️) in the lock of his bike at the train station. He came back to no bike and no keys. We had to get a new bike, and replace the house and car keys, none of which was covered by our insurance because he had left the keys in the lock. Car keys cost £400 to change and that was for a Nissan about 15 years ago.

Thank you @InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest
That's good news on the price. Really bad news on the timescale...

It honestly depends on the type of key. Ours is keyless entry and a new key and programming by the dealer was around £300. We couldn’t find anyone else able to program the key at that time.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 28/12/2021 09:35

A home start recovery man broke my only car key in the ignition of my car about 7 years ago because he thought the way to get it to start was to be more aggressive about it (never use a service that subcontracts to local company call out go with one of the big 3, he also smoked in my car and wondered why I was cross), they covered the cost of the key but a mobile service came out to do it and it was £170 and the same day

OneTC · 28/12/2021 09:38

I got 2 remote fobs and a matey to come out and programme them for less than 300. Was a next day service

Scarby9 · 28/12/2021 09:41

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus That sounds okay. Tbh I would pay a lot now for same day, tho maybe not with the bank holiday premium.

@OneTC 'Matey'?

I thought you'd put your license plate in and it would come up with a price.

Good luck and hope you get it sorted

R0tational · 28/12/2021 09:50

Pay a friend to drive up with it?

CottonSock · 28/12/2021 09:51

I got ours done at main dealer. It was at least £200.

Shedmistress · 28/12/2021 09:53

When you say you have lost it, is the car locked and with you? So the key could be wherever you are?

Theraindropontherose · 28/12/2021 09:55

Have you looked at www.parcel2go.com/? Much cheaper offers than £300, many next day.

It does if you enter your reg...see pic below.

This is using totally random details by the way, they're not my actual details/mobile number.

Seems very cheap though...

nosleepgang4life · 28/12/2021 09:57

My partner does this for a living. He would charge £200-300

Justkeeppedaling · 28/12/2021 09:59

Isn't there some one who would drive over to you with the spare key? Friend or relative? Pay expenses plus a bit extra. My friends would do that for me.
Or failing that, get on your local FB page and see if anyone has time on their hands and would like to make a few £££.

wheresmymojo · 28/12/2021 10:00

Where is your spare key and how was the courier going to access it?

Is there someone at home with it?

What about them sending it via DPD or Parcelforce? They should be able to send it tomorrow on the next day service...
