AIBU to have them over even though we have Covid?

I'm not feeling great so brain is all over the place and I can't decide what the best thing to do is!

We have been unwell since Christmas day but due to a lack of LFTs we've not been able to test. We had contact with friends who have Covid so are assuming it is but we don't know for sure.

My DB and family are due to come over on Wednesday. I explained the above. He replied 'I'm not concerned about Covid atall. I think we need to start living with it like any other cold.'

Part of me thinks - well up to them if they want to risk it. Could do with someone coming over and making me a cup of tea/feeding the kids. But would that be really irresponsible?

I'll admit I haven't read all the comments & responses. However, if you feel it's best to bunker down (isolate) then do that. A relative of mine was recently booted out of a gps because she had swelling (prone due to allergies, neg lft) was asked to leave immediately, pcr was then positive. Turns out a symptom in children (BBC/itv never reported!?)
FYI she's 25, not a child

mumofthree22 · 28/12/2021 00:41

@UndertheCedartree you can get a PCR test as you stated on your original post that you have been on contact with friends that have now tested positive for Covid so you would be regarded as a "close contact".

RuggerHug · 28/12/2021 00:53

Mind yourself first, sod him. Take care.

UndertheCedartree · 28/12/2021 01:03

@MolkosTeenageAngst

When you apply for a PCR you are asked if you have certain symptoms - it is only if you have any of those 3 that you can get a PCR. I take it you haven't had Covid. There is a lot more to it than those 3 symptoms. So if I don't have those I an not eligible for a PCR so no not unreasonable to not have had one. If I am eligible can you explain exactly how I could have already got one??

You don’t have to have certain symptoms, you can order a PCR test if you have been a close contact of somebody with covid, it is one of the drop down options on the website.

Oh, I didn't know that. Seem to have read so many different things. The symptom thing was the first bit to come up when I ordered my PCR.

I think it is absurd, under those circumstances, to have them over. And you have the best excuse in the world. "I'm sorry, we're not feeling well at all, and have to cancel. We'll do this later, when we are felling more the thing.

BTW...feeling more which thing? How does that thing actually feel? WHY DO WE SAY THIS???

Thank you for that, I didn't realise. I didn't order one for my DS as he didn't have any of the 3 main symptoms (neither did the close contacts) I will order him one now.

I've never heard of that saying! So I take it means when we are feeling better. So the thing must be something good!

The website is so outdated on the first page I can understand why some people think they don't need a PCR. I don't know why they still only have "a new continuous cough" " a fever" and "a loss of taste/smell" as the only options (or pretty much that wording)

But yes you all need PCRs and your brother is being ridiculous

SocialConnection · 28/12/2021 01:19

Yes YABU

Can't believe what I read on here at times. No wonder the UK is in such a mess.

montysma1 · 28/12/2021 01:25

You had all this previously covid related ill health previously and it didn't occur to you that it's a bad idea to pass it around?

1967buglet · 28/12/2021 01:26

If you use the ZOE app from King’s College, London you can get a PCR test pretty quickly without having the classical symptoms. Your DB should not come over, and I hope you feel better soon.

How do you get a PCR test through the app? I have been using it for majority of pandemic and I think I was requested through it to book a test once about a year ago but have never been asked since, even when I’ve been logging cold symptoms, and haven’t seen an option to order a PCR test through it?

Yes, it did occur to me. I wouldn't have asked if it hadn't occured to me.

Is it just me that finds it so hard to find clear, up to date guidance? When you are feeling so unwell already it needs to be super clear. I kept reading under 18s don't need to isolate after being in close contact but are advised to take LFTs every day. Of course noone can get hold of LFTs but I kept thinking surely they need to isolate if they have been around someone with Covid especially as this new kind is so contagious.

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 28/12/2021 02:19

I hadn't been a close contact or had any of the main symptoms but I knew I had Covid so clicked yes to get a test. If you think it's Covid then you can do the same. The symptoms have changed but the official literature hasn't been updated to match.

1967buglet · 28/12/2021 02:35

@MolkosTeenageAngst If you report symptoms that indicate COVID, they email you and suggest you get a PCR test, and include a link to make it happen. I had some symptoms after vaccination that lasted a while, so I took a PCR they sent me. Luckily, negative.

Hollyhobbi · 28/12/2021 02:39

Gosh. No wonder so many people in the UK have Covid at the moment. That's ridiculous that the website is so out of date. Although you would think that people would check to see what the symptoms of the Omicron actually are if they didn't already know them. Op I hope you recover soon but if you are back using an inhaler you really should rest and get a GP to check you today.

ChrimboGateauxCatto · 28/12/2021 02:39

Call your local pharmacies and see if they can drop some lft's off to you, AND book a pcr test. And don't take the chance. It's hard hearing from someone who was hospitalised that you wouldn't automatically do the right thing now...

I didn't automatically know what the right thing was. My thinking skills aren't very good.

And noone has any LFTs and I've already ordered PCRs.

So after you being hospitalised with covid last year and having long covid your brother has called it nothing more than a cold? He sounds like a right dick! You sound a lot more measured and I'm glad you've decided to not have him over because it's clear he doesn't care less about likely spreading it around to people who are more vulnerable than him, some people are so astonishingly selfish!
Hope you're feeling better soon OP. I know its a pita to get a pcr when you don't drive.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 28/12/2021 03:08

Aside from any legal or moral considerations...I'd be really pissed off with a close relative dismissing an illness that had hospitalised me and taken me months to get over, as 'just a cold'!

Interesting. I’ve currently got a cold (sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing a lot etc) which I’ve reported the last few days and they haven’t suggested a PCR to me.
