With Dh and Dd, 3.5, any ideas what to eat/do to make it a bit more of an event than a normal day?

What are your plans?

We get a takeaway from the nicest expensive takeaway that's only used for special treats, watch a film and go to bed. Kids aren't bothered about NYE so we've made a NY day out our tradition.

PinkiOcelot · 27/12/2021 22:34

Nothing these days. I’m always in bed by 12.

PumpkinPie2016 · 27/12/2021 22:36

To be honest, we do very little, if anything on NYE.

I have never liked it - even as a teenager. Not really sure why, there are no bad connotations and I enjoy Christmas. NYE just does nothing for me - don't really see the point.

We are usually at home as DS is only 8. Will watch a bit of telly. May or May not stay up until 12 to bring it in.

TheBitterBoy · 27/12/2021 22:38

We rarely go out for NYE. Always a nice three course meal from M&S, champagne, and the Big Fat Quiz of the Year (recorded from Boxing Day) on TV

TellerTuesday · 27/12/2021 22:39

It's just another night in our house. As PP said no bad memories or anything it just does nothing for me at all. Even as a teenager/young adult I always found NYE a total damp squib. We'll watch have a takeaway & maybe play some switch or board games with DD and that's about as exciting as it gets

LuckyLuckyWoman · 27/12/2021 22:41

NYE at work till 5

Home to a nice steak and a bottle of red

NYD work till 5

Icenii · 27/12/2021 22:42

We always go for a hike. Stay over night the night before and get out. Its lovely being out. Then get home. Take out and generally tired for bed.

mdh2020 · 27/12/2021 22:43

We are having friends over for High Tea and then will be on our own. I will probably be asleep by 11

Furrydogmum · 27/12/2021 22:44

We often have a big family gathering, the noisier the cheering and laughter the better at midnight for our firework phobic dog :-(

WhatTheEll · 27/12/2021 22:44

Posh cheese, champers and HOOTERNANNY 🎉

Same here.

We used to have friends over for a meal and then boardgames but it's such a long time to wait between eating and midnight and used to get boring. So now DH & I have a nice meal at the dining table and then rent a film and watch it together. Last year we had a lot to drink and went to.bed before midnight. I think it was the first time I haven't stayed up until midnight (as an adult) and it was no hardship to miss the Jools Holland thing and fireworks.

anyoldname76 · 27/12/2021 22:46

We don't do much, not really into hosting so don't have a party, tend to just do a buffet, play a few board games and listen to music with our DC. When I was young and childfree I went out but I'm glad those days are over tbh

Starcaller · 27/12/2021 22:47

We just have our favourite meal and then when DD is asleep we watch a film and do a jigsaw or some board games etc. till the bells. I'm pregnant this year so if I make it to midnight I'm doing well Grin

AnnaSW1 · 27/12/2021 22:47

We have 4 yr olds. We do party food and party games. Pass the parcel, party poppers and all that stuff. They love it

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 27/12/2021 22:48

We're doing fondue! Not with oil or cheese...But the kids will love it and it's so easy to prep. And drinks and probably crap TV!

hivemindneeded · 27/12/2021 22:50

We've done this a few times while DC were young. We light candles and have a family dinner where we discuss the highlights of the year - all the best memories from it. Then we take turns to give each other fun NY resolutions or goals instead of making our own.
Then we light giant sparklers outside and write our hopes for the year ahead with them.
Before putting DC to bed (way before midnight) we pull party poppers and say Happy new Year and link hands and sing Auld Lang Syne. Then when midnight actually strikes DH and I have a glass of champagne.

I used to feel a bit sad we weren't at some glamorous party but now I love spending NYE at home like this. It's become a tradition.

vixeyann · 27/12/2021 22:56

We go out early doors for a bike ride or beach walk and then have a relaxing afternoon evening of party games and a buffet. Not too bothered about staying up till 12 but will watch a film.

Holothane · 27/12/2021 22:59

Stranger things Marathon a first for me I will watch Big Ben and fireworks only because I’m planning my future and 2022 is the year things will change one way or another. Then I’ll start counting down to Stranger things s4.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 27/12/2021 23:04

Never really seen the attraction of NYE, not even before DC. Never been out on NYE. We usually get a decent takeaway, pjs and a movie. It's just me and DC so bedtime after we've let the new year in.

Fidgetty · 27/12/2021 23:17

We're bringing the DC to a pantomime type show this NYE, will probably get some nice takeaway on the way home and play games/watch tv together and put out some party food. They're little so they won't make 12 but I'll probably have a bottle of champagne with DH and watch a film when they're gone to bed.

SocksAndTheCity · 27/12/2021 23:26

I've never liked NYE anyway, but I worked behind a bar for a few years and it was like amateur night - so much mess and people making an pain in the arse of themselves. The forced-ness of it puts me off.

Now I usually go to the cinema earlyish and get something nice to eat in front of the TV afterwards; I was awake to watch the New Year drones last year, but not for much longer. I do also have a ticket for the Yayoi Kusama mirror rooms at the Tate Modern in the morning, so that'll make me get my arse out of bed Smile

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/12/2021 23:28

We tend to go for a late lunch (this year we are booked at a tapas place) then in the evening have nice cheese, crisps etc. I wear something nice for lunch but am usually in pjs and no makeup in the evening. Our cat gets really distressed by the fireworks so last year I spent the bells in the hall cupboard with her and a white noise app!

Bless her! My eldest dog hates the fireworks, last year I found some calming music for him on YouTube and he laid under a blanket on the sofa with my phone!

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 27/12/2021 23:36

Some absolutely lovely ideas here.
I've never got around to it but I read once a poster had a positive jar and read things out from it every new years eve. Then made some resolutions.

Love the idea of party food and parcel 😍.
And the fondue but what with if not oil or cheese??
