With Dh and Dd, 3.5, any ideas what to eat/do to make it a bit more of an event than a normal day?

What are your plans?

We usually have party food from m&s then watch tv, see in the bells and then let off our firework.

This year dh has to work until 10.30pm so won’t be home before 11.30pm so the kids and I will have something else for dinner, don’t know what yet, watch tv then do bells etc once he’s home. We’re going to save the party food for Jan 2nd.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/12/2021 23:59

@KurtWildesChristmasNamechange I should say it is a massive cupboard - some other houses on the street have it converted to a wc - and her “safe space” in case that sounded cruel!

We had great success with Classic FM’s pet playlist on bonfire night so I might see if I can get that on listen again.

Mogwaimummy · 28/12/2021 00:04

The HMO across the road always decide to set off industrial strength fireworks right next to people's cars while pissed. Makes delightful entertainment. Hmm

GTAlogic · 28/12/2021 00:44

We buy a party food platter from Tesco or Iceland and serve that with some fizzy pop, some cake and some sandwiches. We put the party music on and the disco bulb in and just let the dc go mad. At about 9, we quiten everything down and watch some previous NYE bells on YouTube, do a countdown and welcome in the "New Year" with a round of Auld Lang Syne, some of the fizzy pop and some party poppers. Then the dc go to bed and dh and I plop down in front of the TV until we go to bed as normal.

LondonGrimmer · 28/12/2021 00:50

You could celebrate with the Aussies at lunchtime... Have an indoor bbq and fireworks and countdown etc and watch the Sydney Harbour fireworks on TV as much more civilised time for a 3.5yr old Smile

onedayoranother · 28/12/2021 04:55

We normally have a roast dinner watch a film that's it., but presumably you are thinking of day stuff. Go skating? I don't recall us doing anything special to mark the day to be honest.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 28/12/2021 06:11

Never liked it.
I had a few good NYE nights, but more of them were rubbish.
Even in Australia, S. Korea and Scotland, I couldn't make it work.
And I hate standing around and being jostled in a city centre, while waiting for fireworks.
I REALLY hate standing around.

I now believe it's better to stay home and have some treats, such as nice food and drink.

TheRealHousewife · 28/12/2021 06:29

@WhatTheEll

Posh cheese, champers and HOOTERNANNY 🎉
Same in our home too 🍾😊
MsTSwift · 28/12/2021 06:35

What on earth is “high tea”?! Is it a religious thing?

shrunkenhead · 28/12/2021 06:48

High tea is afternoon tea ie posh little sandwiches and little cakes on a pretty cake stand with tea in a China tea pot drunk out of China cups and saucers.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 28/12/2021 06:52

@MsTSwift

People use 'high tea' to mean afternoon tea - cakes, tea, little sandwiches with the crusts cut off ..

I can't abide NYE - and I don't like the maudlin looking backwards (over the year) either. I'm not a party person, and drink very little.

I'll be watching a film, and in bed well before 12.

ItsAlwaysThere · 28/12/2021 06:54

@Holothane

Stranger things Marathon a first for me I will watch Big Ben and fireworks only because I’m planning my future and 2022 is the year things will change one way or another. Then I’ll start counting down to Stranger things s4.
We have been counting down the days since the end of season 3! It's taking far too long but I'm so excited for it!
OmgIThinkILikeYou · 28/12/2021 06:57

We have bought one of those murder detective solving games and are going to play that whilst drinking baileys and having a takeaway

MeanderingGently · 28/12/2021 07:01

I shall be at home. I'm working in the day and will be quietly relaxing in the evening.

No noisy parties, I tried NYE at a relatives one year some time ago - never again! Although I don't do anything special, I do like to think through the past year and make a few NY resolutions as the clock chimes midnight.

I usually have the fireworks on the TV (when I was very much younger, I actually went down to London to see them myself) but this year it seems even they are cancelled. Very sad....

DogsandCatsB4u · 28/12/2021 07:18

I refuse to go out nye as everything is too expensive just for one night so going to visit my dad for a pizza night with siblings.
I’m going to eat with friends on NYD instead

loopylindi · 28/12/2021 07:19

Can I add a more positive experience to this. Like so many of the posters NYE left me cold. Then one year we went away (for the first time at Christmas/NY) to Madeira, where they have THE most extensive firework display for NY. That in itself was awesome, but better was the atmosphere in the city. It was warm, busy but didn't feel crowded. People were happy but there was little evidence of alcohol being drunk outside of restaurants. We rocked up at a viewing point where others had parked, opened their car boots which had everything you could want for a party. We were plied with food and drinks by all around us for the hours leading up to midnight. The display played out around the natural amphitheatre from various points. They were all synchronised and went on for well over 20 minutes with an explosive finale. Check it out on line Funchal Fireworks 2000. Fabulous. We've been back several times since (the winter weather was also a draw!!)

@MsTSwift

High tea is an early dinner, filling but not fancy eg ham and eggs at 5pm
notanothertakeaway · 28/12/2021 07:34

Check out Oban fireworks 2011 on YouTube. Very funny. All the fireworks went off at once, by accident

I'd post a link but don't want to play the video by mistake and wake up my DH

merryxmasmelodies · 28/12/2021 07:38

I'm scheduled to get my booster at 3 pm on NYE so nothing planned...

Hesma · 28/12/2021 07:39

When my DDs were that small we streamed the previous year’s fireworks off you tube at about 9pm so the thought it was midnight then put them to bed and enjoyed the rest of the evening

GoodnightGrandma · 28/12/2021 07:41

I hate new year, don’t see the point. I’ll be in bed at 10pm reading my book.
And then I’ll be awake at midnight because the dog’s scared of fireworks.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/12/2021 07:43

Usually we get together with or 3 other couples and cook a meal and see the new year in but not this year.

overthethamesfromyou · 28/12/2021 07:46

@Alonelonelylonersbadidea

We're doing fondue! Not with oil or cheese...But the kids will love it and it's so easy to prep. And drinks and probably crap TV!
Still trying to work out what's in your fondue if it's not oil or cheese?? Chocolate?
MsTSwift · 28/12/2021 07:46

So two entirely different descriptions of what high tea actually is 😁. Sounds made up to me.

MsTSwift · 28/12/2021 07:48

More fun to go to or to have a party surely? We were stuck at home in lockdown last nye - no thanks not doing that again!
