To ask how much you would pay for this?

Had a go at making a wreath just for our own door. Have had lots of comments about selling them but never know if it’s just people being polite or whatever 🤣😅 I’m absolutely NOT a crafty person whatsoever but was pretty chuffed with how it turned out!

Honest feedback please - would you pay for something like this? And if so, how much would you expect to pay? Anything that would make you more likely to buy it? Obviously could be made in other colours to suit taste 😊

How many hours did it take you & what was the cost of materials? You would need to work out if you would end up slogging away for peanuts.

Yours is nicer than this
Was £50 reduced to £25
But …
Amazon
£19

Greys007 · 27/12/2021 12:10

@BeLessMe Cost probably £12ish all in I think. Could have made it in a 2-3 hours if I sat down to actually make one. Did bits and pieces of mine over a few days while DS napped 🤣

About 15 to 20euro

Hockeyboysmum · 27/12/2021 12:13

Round here they are about £15/20

deadlanguage · 27/12/2021 12:14

Is it real greenery? Ie will only be good for one year? If so, no more than £10. If it’s fake and will last longer, maybe up to £20.

StFrancisdeCompostela · 27/12/2021 12:16

I think you’ve done a really nice job. I would probably pay £20ish.

nonevernotever · 27/12/2021 12:19

It's lovely. Round our way the florists charge between £35 and £55, but we (neighbours in the street) get together and all make our own.

CatheP · 27/12/2021 12:20

£20-30? I like the idea that the colours can be customised
You have done a really lovely job!

Bluntness100 · 27/12/2021 12:22

It looks nice. A woman in our village makes and sells them at the local shop, cost for large ones is about 20 quid.

@deadlanguage It’s all artificial. And the lights are battery operated so can definitely be reused. It’s made on a wicker ring that’s around 40cm in diameter.

I'd pay £30 as it's nicer than the ones in our garden centre.

mercimacherie · 27/12/2021 12:33

£15-£20. Quite surprised it took 2-3 hours to make, I've never tried made an artificial wreath but assumed it would be quicker.

I make something like this every year with foraged foliage and it takes me about 2 hours.

SameToo · 27/12/2021 12:33

@deadlanguage how odd. I pay more for a real one as they’re much nicer.

@mercimacherie Yours looks lovely 😊 2-3 hours is a bit of a guess - it’s the first time I’ve ever done one and I made it over a few days just adding bits and pieces to it as DS napped. Would probably be quicker now that I’ve worked out the best way to attach things etc.

@StFrancisdeCompostela @nonevernotever @CatheP @Bluntness100 @WayneBruce Thanks guys 😊 as I said - I’m absolutely NOT crafty in the slightest so I was quite happy with how it turned out. I think I might just make a few for friends and family for next year in colours to suit their homes 😊

Cottagepieandpeas · 27/12/2021 13:33

I’d pay £20 for it, definitely. Probably up to £25, but I prefer twigs / cones / berries on mine.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 27/12/2021 13:40

Your base price means that you need to charge at least £20 for the parts alone.

If you get quicker and can bulk buy the parts cheaper then get quicker at making them you could prove them properly:

Parts x 2, including any wrapping, price tags etc
Time for making at at least £10/ hour, include design time
Portion of any time money spent advertising, social media etc again all at £10/hour minimum
Delivery charges etc

Any less and you would be underpricing your time and effort. You'd also be a 'hobby seller' which means you'd be undercutting people who make a living from making.

It's hobbyists that lead to the low prices you have been quoted here. Some people don't value hand made over mass made and won't pay the money that is needed for a maker to do anything other than break even.

It's a perennial problem for makers. I have been called greedy and money grabbing for some of my prices. One of a kind, hand made pieces and, if I listened to the cheapskates, I'd sell at cost and still be called greedy. It's worse for me sometimes as my art is made from reclaimed materials, which I, apparently, should give away for free!

So, before you start to do this think about what you want out of it.

Personally I'd pay £30 for one of your wreaths. So you'd have to get both your costs and time down by at least 50%

PrincessNutella · 27/12/2021 13:40

Hi, OP, I generally think that crafters don't get paid what their work is worth, but I want to tell you I think you made a really lovely wreath. And I am a total Grinch!

JuneOsborne · 27/12/2021 13:42

In the local garden centre, they'd be north of £50.

Herecomesthesun70 · 27/12/2021 13:42

That's worth£30 of anyones money. It looks great

Hairyfriend · 27/12/2021 13:46

I really like it, and wouldn't say it unless I'd put it on my own front door. I'd spend £20-£25.

I'd maybe add some ribbons or ribbon loops to break up the amount of gold baubles. You could also sprinkle/spray the pine cones with safe glitter or add different shaped cones too.

Our neighbours also have a lovely autumn wreath with lots of russet coloured leaves and mini pumpkins on it. I goes up in Oct. Not halloween looking, but could easily be adapted if people wanted something spooky.

It's not hobbyists fault that this sort of craft activity is enjoyable, so plenty of people are happy to sell items on at break even or less.

The reality is most of these crafty things are not a high skilled activity. In most cases if hand made wreaths were priced at rates which provided even minimum wage hourly pay for the makers time, you'd find people would happily make their own because they arent willing to pay for others time for something they can make themselves.

ParkheadParadise · 27/12/2021 14:00

£15/£20
I bought a plain wreath from B&M for £5 a couple of years ago. I also bought a box of ornaments. It probably cost about £12 in total. I take it to dd's grave every Christmas.

To ask how much you would pay for this?
HippeePrincess · 27/12/2021 14:00

I think they may have been being polite.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 27/12/2021 14:01

I think you missed my point entirely! You are taking about something different, the other side of the hand made coin - the famed Facebook Tat.

The point is that people choose to pay someone else to make something they cannot. But, for some reason, won't pay for the time involved. Anyone who sells cheaply only encourages that point of view.

Be a hobbyist if you want to. But at least be aware of the reason some people will look askance!

I value both my time and my experience. So I charge accordingly. Anyone telling me I am too expensive gets told to go home and make it themself. I no longer feel guilty for my pricing. No maker should feel scared to price for a profit.
