How often do you buy yourself clothes?

PumpkinPickle22 · 27/12/2021 10:22

I always feel very guilty buying clothes. I probably buy myself 3 things a year.
It’s getting to a point where I’ve got holes in everything and I’m avoiding events as I have nothing to wear.
I always feel that money could go towards more important things like bills.

I’ve decided I’m going to prioritise myself a bit this year and try building up my wardrobe.

I’m interested to hear how often others buy themselves clothes

I was think 1 or 2 items a month is ok?

There's no real rule as to what's OK. For me it relies on the three pillars of having money, wanting or needing something and being arsed to get it falling into alignment.

If you need something, buy it. If you want something and can afford it, buy it.

Svara · 27/12/2021 10:30

I buy want I need rather than a set amount. If I have clothes I avoid wearing because they look worn out or otherwise then I get rid of them and replace.

StarfishDish · 27/12/2021 10:30

I used to buy a lot but they were always second hand/charity shop finds. Now, we have a 10 month old baby who costs a fortune in nursery fees so I've cut back Xmas Grin

I buy a few things at the start of each season ,normally spend about £400

GemmaRuby · 27/12/2021 10:33

Mine varies a lot - can go for months without buying anything, then might buy 3 or 4 items in a month.
It definitely sounds like you could do with some new clothes, so if you can afford to I think you should definitely make a considered list of what you want and spend the time finding the perfect items.

MushMonster · 27/12/2021 10:33

Well done OP!
I go with sales, so if I need trousers and they are on sale now in Jan, I just bought as many as needed. At the end, you save the money.
I did the same for my child.
So I tend to buy a bunch of clothes for both of us taking the chance of the sales.
If anything needed in between, I just buy it.
If I liked something, but I did not need it, then is when I think about it a bit more. I used to just leave it, because I had not much money to spend. At present, I am a bit better off, so I just get it!
I would say, buy what you need and like at the rate you can afford.
It is very important to feel well about yourself. That is a huge investment on your well being and your family's.

Chasingsquirrels · 27/12/2021 10:35

When I need or want something.
Generally I don't buy much, then have splurges.
More than 3 things a year though.

In the last few weeks I've had a new jumper dress and a pair of jeans, plus a 3 pack of socks.
I wanted the jumper dress as I've been in work a bit more the last couple of months, my jeans are faded and ds2 was buying me socks as a Christmas present and I saw some thicker boot ones that I wanted.
Now thinking mentally through my wardrobe and can't remember the last thing I brought before those.

Eileen101 · 27/12/2021 10:36

Hardly ever. My pants are full of holes 🤦🏼‍♀️ i brought some new bras before i went back to work with my almost 4 year old, then a few jumpers in the sale when I started working from home when I returned from my second maternity leave.

I just end up not prioritising myself. There's not a huge amount of spare money after the mortgage and nursery are paid, but there's definitely enough for me to replace my pants. I genuinely have no idea why I don't - I sort everyone else out, so why not myself? 🤦🏼‍♀️

BooksAndGin · 27/12/2021 10:41

When I see something I like. Makes it easier on the finances rather than waiting but I do buy cheap/in sales.

Rina66 · 27/12/2021 10:49

I probably buy something weekly, although that could be clothes, shoes or accessories. I don't buy very expensive items, I mostly get my weekly fix from the likes of Zara, H & M, Cos, Mango, ASOS and online boutiques. I will spend more for an event and try to have a few weeks off if I make a bigger purchase, rarely works though! DH is trying to impose a 'one in one out' regime, it has been met with extreme resistance, who put him in charge anyway?

ParkheadParadise · 27/12/2021 10:55

When I see something I like.
Probably once a month I will buy clothes, shoes, or boots for myself.
This morning I've ordered online
jeans, 2 t-shirts, a long cardigan and a pair of trainers.

Tinseltrauma · 27/12/2021 10:55

Does it have to be new op? I've recently got into Vinted and have found some great things. If you know what you're after and are reasonably good on sizing etc you can still get the shopping 'fix' without spending a lot.

KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 27/12/2021 10:56

Rarely, I mostly only buy clothes when they need replacing because they're knackered

BreakfastOfWaffles · 27/12/2021 10:59

I tend to buy staples when I need them, ie replacing worn out jeans, and then I wait for the sales to get the extras that I like but don't actively need.

Dottyteapot · 27/12/2021 11:19

I realised I was the same as you last year, as I was looking through pictures of my teens as babies, my clothes were all the exact same as the ones I still wore!
So I thought I’d treat myself once a month to a new piece of clothing.
The first month I got 2 new pairs of jeans.
The second month I got a new jacket (in the sale too!), and then about 5 months went past and I couldn’t afford to get anything, then I got a pack of pants and a t shirt and then more months went past and it’s December and I’m in the same situation, so I’ve just got myself a dress from the fatface sale.

My teens on the other hand always look great and have clothes that fit so I guess I’m my own worse enemy when it comes to buying clothes.

Meraas · 27/12/2021 11:22

At the moment, every week.

My DH and family are saying it’s getting to be a problem. It started during lockdown. I haven’t worn 80% of them.

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 11:39

Sell the ones you won't wear@Meraas. That's what I do.

deadlanguage · 27/12/2021 11:40

I buy a few bits at a time probably around 2-3 times a year usually brought on by needing to replace a staple - generally the wire has come out of a bra or the thighs have worn through on jeans. I generally shop online so cluster my purchases to save on postage.

saturning · 27/12/2021 11:52

Whenever I see something that I like- usually at the supermarkets! I buy things like knitwear or "lounging around home" hoodies from eBay second hand. Always buy new jeans as I like to shop around for fit.

If you can afford to buy clothes, then you should. Unfortunately we do live in a culture where people make snap judgments whether we are aware of it or not.
Looking after yourself will make you feel better about yourself - don't deliberate, if you have a spare £40 one month, look for a nice jumper!

OhGiveUp · 27/12/2021 11:56

Usually every couple of months. I tend to buy a lot in one go through so it's not unusual for me to buy say 3 sweaters, a couple of tops, a couple of pairs of jeans and shoes in one go for example.

duvetdayforeveryone · 27/12/2021 11:59

Too often Blush I really need to stop going into charity shops! I blame all the Marie Kondo fans donating their beautiful clothes they don't wear.

My favourite charity shop purchase for 2021 was a full length grey wool coat from Cancer Research for £3 Grin

LaBellina · 27/12/2021 12:01

When I see something that I like. That’s when I see something in a second hand shop.
I love Uniqlo too so if I see something nice I usually wait until it’s on offer/ sale and then buy it. I also wait until the end of the season sale and then buy things for DS in what will be his next years size.

Worriesandwobbles · 27/12/2021 12:07

I do all my clothes shopping online and always have my eye on something on asos. I treat myself to £30 once a month on payday but only if its on sale or I have a voucher code. Some months this might be one pair or trousers or a jumper, sometimes a few vests or tshirts or leggings (never buy labels just own brand stuff) I have a job which is smart/casual so once clothes are bit worn out they are just weekend clothes. Haven't bought a new coat, bag, underwear for a very a very long time ! The thing I can't resist buying are shoes.

Littlepies · 27/12/2021 12:15

I get a stitch fix box once a quarter and usually keep 3/4 items then everything else I need/want I get on eBay or Vinted second hand. This thread has made me realise I haven’t replaced my underwear in a long long time though!
