How often do you buy yourself clothes?

I always feel very guilty buying clothes. I probably buy myself 3 things a year.
It’s getting to a point where I’ve got holes in everything and I’m avoiding events as I have nothing to wear.
I always feel that money could go towards more important things like bills.

I’ve decided I’m going to prioritise myself a bit this year and try building up my wardrobe.

I’m interested to hear how often others buy themselves clothes

I was think 1 or 2 items a month is ok?

I've stopped buying clothes, because I actually had an addiction to it, so not buying anything unless I actually need it. It stems from childhood ( the 70s, as people didn't have much). I reorganised my wardrobe and was horrified. Only buy as I need now.
If I do buy clothes, I buy better quality classic stuff that's going to last. Usually in sales etc.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 27/12/2021 12:21

I buy what I need when I need it. I am not a fast fashion person and I make stuff last for years, or wear it frequently. Ive still got a sleeveless shirt I bought when I was 14 from dorothy perkins and Im 40.

StrongerOrWeaker · 27/12/2021 12:24

Only buy something when I need it/ need a replacement. In 2021i bought some new tights and a new pair of running trainers and that's it. I dislike shopping though!

Emerald5hamrock · 27/12/2021 12:27

Since lockdown a lot, there was a period of about 5 years when I couldn't afford new stuff so I'd a lot of catching up to do.
This year 2022 I intend to knuckle down minimise spending and build some savings.

Buytoomuchonebay · 27/12/2021 13:06

God I’m always buying ‘new’ clothes on eBay and charity shops-at least 4-6 items a month
My wardrobe is bulging even though I’m always having clear outs
I’m going to try the no buy jan as it’s getting silly-I could wear a new outfit every day for a month and have 3/4 clothes left unworn
I know it stems from my childhood-we had no nice stuff to wear so I go overboard now I can

hoomama · 27/12/2021 13:13

I buy 2-3 items every payday x

adoreyou · 27/12/2021 13:18

I would generally only allow myself stuff from Primark.... couldn't warrant spending more on stuff from other shops.

But I've recently started trying to replace things by using stitch fix. I find the choices in the shops over whelming so having a few key items/outfits posted to me every now and then is much better.

Proudboomer · 27/12/2021 13:19

I don’t impulse buy clothes and only buy what needs replacing. I don’t go anywhere or do anything that needs expensive clothing so when I do buy it is with comfort and practicality in mind. This winter all I needed was some warm joggers to wear at home and to replace a couple of jumpers. I found perfectly good ones on everything five pounds so spent under £50 on 3 jumpers and 4 pairs of fleece joggers. This last years t shirts I wear now as an extra layer under my jumpers and will then replace them in the summer.

Meraas · 27/12/2021 13:22

@KirstenBlest

Sell the ones you won't wear@Meraas. That's what I do.
I have been thinking of that!p. Do you eBay yours?
FangsForTheMemory · 27/12/2021 13:26

Mostly one or two things a month, I'm a big size so I tend to buy anything I like in my size that is on offer. I really like Monsoon and Seasalt stuff and it's expensive so I always look at their sales.

DuneFan · 27/12/2021 13:26

I have a monthly budget of £30. If I don't spend it it is rolled over to the next month.

Maybe have a look at something like project 333, see if you have "enough" in that context, might help you work out where your gaps are?

KirstenBlest · 27/12/2021 13:28

I used to but haven't for about a year. I am drowning in stuff.

I'm supposed to be sorting it out today but am on here instead.

There is stuff that I can't even remember buying and things that are lovely but not in my size! Lots of e-bay impulse buys and charity shop 'I couldn't leave it there at that price'

Primark is surprisingly good for many items. Their pyjamas are the best! Their t-shirts are great, but need to be washed inside out in order to prevent bobbling. I like the jumpers in men's wear. Their fancy tights are also wonderful.
HelloDulling · 27/12/2021 13:34

I buy something every month, at least.

HintofVintagePink · 27/12/2021 13:40

I capsuled my wardrobe in lockdown and just buy to replace when needed.
I do but a new work outfit occasionally if I have a client meeting, but that’s pretty rare now.

Youcunnyfunt · 27/12/2021 14:05

It varies so much… I don’t have a set budget per month. I might go a couple of months without buying something, then I might either need a replacement (underwear or coat or boots etc). It’s been ages since I’ve found anything unrepairable though, apart from socks. I replaced all my ankle socks last month, that was £30. My coats, boots, jeans are not cheap but they last years and years.
I reproofed my waterproof coat a few weeks ago. It would have cost £400+ to replace. £15 for the solutions and it’s waterproof again.
I also patch my jeans. I still don’t think I have that many clothes really for someone who repairs things. I do swaps quite a lot with friends and family which helps the wardrobe stay fun without breaking the bank!

Ragwort · 27/12/2021 14:25

I rarely buy clothes because I seem to have so many accrued over the years ... if I do buy it is only ever from charity shops.

PinkLime · 27/12/2021 14:50

Every few months usually. I usually have a bit of a mini spree and get a few pieces in the sales or if there’s a good discount code. Occasionally will get a new top or dress from Zara for a special occasion.

MrBoldwood · 27/12/2021 14:56

Oh crikey, every month. I love buying clothes, love wearing them, it’s a huge pleasure for me.

FanGirlX · 27/12/2021 15:19

I've only really been buying leggings, trackie bottoms and jersey tops since covid started, they are cheap and I wear them until they have holes in. I've been into the office about 10 times in almost 2 years, so all my old work stuff is on rotation and doesn't need replacing yet.

I have treated myself to some chunky, flat carvella boots (but should get a few winters out of them) and I'm on the market for a waterproof winter coat. Other than that I'm leaving it to spring I think.

The last 2 years have been unusual with so much time spent at home. I used to go shopping with my friend once a month, buy a couple of things (may only have been a pack of knickers) and make a social event out of it, in that we would go for food too. Now I just buy everything online.
