To be annoyed at (awful) photos of me on someone else's social media

Sister in law has posted up our pre Christmas meal and has used awful photos of me that I wouldn't have even kept in my camera roll let alone for the social media world to see. She's since removed them at my request and in her opinion they were nice pictures.

We get along very very well so not anything underhand but still really annoyed she put them on.

OP posts:

I’m so cautious of this if I’ve taken pictures. I’d never upload one of other people unless I’d sent them it and checked 🙈 It was the same when I’d just had a baby and the inlaws just shared all the pictures they’d taken with me in them looking and feeling awful. Other than saying please don’t take pictures of me it’s quite difficult 🤦🏼‍♀️

venusmay · 26/12/2021 16:26

Yes, I have a relative who does this. She deliberately takes bad photos of everyone else and takes extra careful shots of herself (think filters, selfie carefully posed).she has very poor self esteem and it seems to be a way of raising herself up. Not nice but you've got to feel sorry for her.

Everydaydayisaschoolday · 26/12/2021 16:27

My niece has just done something similar. I look deranged but I'm not going to ask her to take it down. It's a reminder of a lovely day, how I look really doesn't matter.

notacooldad · 26/12/2021 16:28

I don’t understand why people post pictures of other people on social media. Don’t get me wrong, I used to do it when social media was in its infancy. But I thought we all understood privacy and internet safety now
It sounds like the OP wouldnt be bothered about the picture if it was a flattering one of her.
Most people I know ask not to be photographed in a group if theres a chance of it going on sm and step away from the camera.

LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 16:34

@Grapewrath

I am the least photogenic person on the planet. All my friends laugh about it because I look the worst in each group shot! Hopefully I’m not that hideous ok real life. Don’t worry about it op I’m sure no one noticed
You need to get some new 'friends.' Shock
LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 16:35

@Laiste

88.9% ??? lol

oddly specific!

meant to say 99.9%

Isn't 99.9% equally as 'oddly specific' as 88.9%?
LittleRoundRobin · 26/12/2021 16:35

@HollowTalk

Interesting to see so many unsupportive messages on one thread. The OP just wanted a bit of empathy and understanding. Seems like the Christmas spirit has left the site.
Sympathy for what? Confused The SIL took the photos down as soon as the OP asked.

I don't use this term lightly, but FFS this is a MAMMOTH 'First World Problem.'

TheCanyon · 26/12/2021 16:38

I'm typically quite photogenic but dh has posted shit loads of photos of me that look horsey. I honestly cannot give a shiny shit, folks know what I look like so why care?

Thunderingwankgoblet · 26/12/2021 16:46

My in-laws are famous for printing out horrendous pictures of other people and putting them on their mantelpiece.

PermanentTemporary · 26/12/2021 16:53

@Thunderingwankgoblet oh God mine too. They have an A4 pic of me and dh that I hate positioned to hit the eye as you walk in. Flinch.

Laiste · 26/12/2021 16:57

LittleRoundRobin - Isn't 99.9% equally as 'oddly specific' as 88.9%?

No. saying something happens 99.9% of the time is a saying. It means that it happens so often it's near as damn it all of the time.

88.9 was a typo.

strawberrymilk7 · 26/12/2021 17:01

She took it down. As you said you don't think it was malicious so she probably thought they were nice pics of you. We are all out own worst critic.

Saying something happens 99.9% of the time is a saying...

Is it? Confused

MissMaple82 · 26/12/2021 17:06

This is what pisses me off about social media, people think they have the right to upload photos of other people. I lothe Facebook and Instagram!

OMICHristmasOn · 26/12/2021 17:07

this sums up what i was going to say www.theodysseyonline.com/just-take-the-picture

Thunderingwankgoblet · 26/12/2021 17:11

Oh god! I feel your pain. Many grainy pictures of me grimacing adorn the mantelpiece of my in-laws.

MadeOfStarStuff · 26/12/2021 17:11

YABU

She thought they were nice photos and removed them when you asked her to. An absolute non issue!

Dreamstate · 26/12/2021 17:17

Er ironic isn't it you complain of her posting pics you don't like, she takes them down. You come on a public forum albeit anonymously and complain about what she did....imagine if she saw this! 👀

Your no better ...vet you were expecting people to rip her a new one and say how awful she was otherwise why do this post

oftenbaffled · 26/12/2021 17:17

Op she took, them down
You get on well
Just let it go

IamGusFring · 26/12/2021 17:18

I know what you mean @rugbysport. I hate when people do this .

oftenbaffled · 26/12/2021 17:18

Or rather vice versa

steff13 · 26/12/2021 17:19

Is it?

Yes it is.

pinkgin85 · 26/12/2021 17:25

I don't know why people do this. One of my closest friends has done this to me a few times, we have soooo many pictures together of our group of friends but whenever she wants to wish one of them a happy birthday she posts the one of me looking horrible; I was post partum and a bit of a mess. I don't understand why she chooses that one when we literally have hundreds to choose from, and shes normally very thoughtful Hmm

ShippingNews · 26/12/2021 17:42

Why don't you set your social media to "review tagging", so at least when a picture is put up with your tagged, you have to check and allow it to happen. At least you get some control back.
