Just to remind you that alternative narratives are possible and the smallest acts of personal change are revolutionary. This is from the great feminist cartoonist Jacky Fleming. www.jackyfleming.co.uk/

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

It would have been obvious to the guests that nothing was cooking long before they sat down at the table.
Have you ever heard of this concept of ‘jokes’ Grin
RonniePickering · 26/12/2021 10:30

Are you able to articulate why?

I like the message. The visual doesn't tally with the message though. She hasn't set a place for herself for starters 😂
I agree it would have worked better if the people around the table were her family members.
It looks like she's invited her friends around and then made that statement. Bit rude 🤷🏼‍♀️

Snoopsnoggysnog · 26/12/2021 10:33

Yes it’s a crap cartoon and not witty at all, not familiar with her work but as a single example I’m not impressed

WorraLiberty · 26/12/2021 10:33

I think the cartoonist has kicked the ball way over the goal here, with the missed opportunity.

It would make sense if it was a normal family dinner with a husband and grown up children.

But as others have said, she's agreed to host a dinner party by the looks of it and then not bothered cooking??

As Ted Bovis of 'Hi-de-Hi' said: 'The first rule of comedy - you must have reality'.

heldinadream · 26/12/2021 11:28

Ok fair doos it made me laugh this morning but I clearly must try harder so here's some more of Jacky. All views are valid. Any good?

Not a good cartoon, with lots of missed opportunities.

Why are the men dressed like they've come from work but the women at the table are dressed formally? Why is there no place set for the 'cook'? Is this at home or in a restaurant?

It does do a good job of demonstrating the utter shit you can get away with if you wrap your 'art' in a social justice cloak.

FrippEnos · 26/12/2021 11:45

Its not funny and way off the mark for many people.

shouldistop · 26/12/2021 11:48

It's not very good, or feminist.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 26/12/2021 11:49

I like the message (the expectations that cooking is wife-work) but the delivery was off for me. It would've worked better if it was her partner and older children at the table, rather than look like she's hosting a dinner party then said there was no food.

Holly60 · 26/12/2021 11:50

@Peas252

It’s feminist because the expectation was the woman should do all the cooking, and if she doesn’t then nobody else will get off their arses and do it

It looks like a single woman has invited 2 couples for a meal, and then not cooked. It's not revolutionary or feminist, it's ridiculous.

Exactly.
OGenkiDesuKa · 26/12/2021 11:53

This one is better. And also me this year.

@OGenkiDesuKa that was me yesterday Grin

Theunamedcat · 26/12/2021 11:57

How do we know she is "hosting" how many threads on here are from pissed off OP saying her other half (usually male) has invited xyz family over for >insert random reason< and the expectation is that (usually she) does all the work (insert drip feed over twins/pregnancy add in full time job etc etc)

It's constant

RonniePickering · 26/12/2021 11:59

Love that OGenkiDesuKa 😂

3scape · 26/12/2021 12:04

Disturbing how this only makes sense to people with a heteronormative family set up.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 26/12/2021 12:08

What are you basing that on?
SomePosters · 26/12/2021 12:15

Yeah but no

The time to speak up was before.

Making your guests uncomfortable to make a point to a lazy partner is rude as fuck

SpittinKitten · 26/12/2021 12:23

Aw, I've loved Jacky Fleming for years - I think the cartoon in the OP is at least 20 years old.

I really like this one too Smile

NarcissaMalfoysManicure · 26/12/2021 12:32

The humour seems kind of old-fashioned and feminism-lite. If I’d seen it when I was 16 and starting to discover feminism, I’d have been all over it. Not saying it’s bad, just kind of trite nowadays.

Different strokes for different folks so YANBU :)

thepeopleversuswork · 26/12/2021 12:33

I totally share the sentiment but this particular one feels a bit heavy handed and leaden. Very obvious and lacking in subtlety.

And as others have said also daft: the truly feminist approach here would have been a) don’t host at all or b) host but ensure a man does all the cooking. Having a bunch of people over to say “fuck you I’m not cooking” just looks like petty grandstanding.

Porcupineintherough · 26/12/2021 12:39

@SpittinKitten that's one of my favourites too.

Cuck00soup · 26/12/2021 12:41

This is from Matilda the Musical. A good answer to what's for dinner?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 26/12/2021 12:44

Nothing funny about this one. Inviting people over and not cooking is not funny at all.

Gooders1105 · 26/12/2021 15:44

@heldinadream I liked it! Just ordered some postcards for myself 😀
