To think Young Sheldon is better than The Big Bang Theory?

Obvs a thread for those whove seen both.

I loved TBBT since it started, it's in my regular rotation of "background tv", and I think it's done a world of good for those whose interest lie outside of the "norm".

Just finished the first 3 seasons of Young Sheldon, mainly as something to watch on the dark winter nights, and I absolutely love it.

Its warm, got that comforting early 90s glow, funny. I love the little comments from Adult Sheldon that give hints as to how his and Amy's life has carried on from the end of TBBT.

So as a hardened TBBT fan, I'm saying it now. YS is better.

I can’t stand BBT.

I love Young Sheldon.

LittleRedYoshi · 24/12/2021 22:33

Couldn't say which is better - they're good in different ways!

I think they've written the characters of Sheldon and Mary very well, in that I can see their YS characters growing into their TBBT characters. Connie/Meemaw, on the other hand...!

Rubyupbeat · 24/12/2021 22:37

I love both. Young Sheldon is great, I love Georgie, his accent is wonderful, also Billy his neighbour is hilarious. All the characters are so authentic and there are many tender moments in it.

SirensofTitan · 24/12/2021 22:39

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz Sheldon's father is portrayed in TDDT as a very different character to the one he is in YS. An unfaithful drunk in an unhappy marriage who died when Sheldon was young.

George in YS is nothing like that and it must be getting near the time when he should be dead if we follow the TBBT timeline

MondayYogurt · 24/12/2021 22:40

YS is more heart warming.
I hate how people mock Richard Dawkins for admitting he enjoys the show, it's such a hollow response to someone simply taking pleasure in light entertainment.

Appalonia · 24/12/2021 22:42

My only problem with it is that older Sheldon talks about how dreadful his childhood was, e.g. being bullied, his dad being drunk, cheating on his mum and dying young. But YS is schmaltzy and cosy and has to have a 'lesson' at the end of each episode ( like The Goldbergs). So, although I do enjoy YS, I don't feel it's the same rather bleak childhood that the adult Sheldon recounts.

Bitofachinwag · 24/12/2021 22:43

@Rshard

Agree totally. One of the best things for me is that the actress who plays Sheldon’s mum in YS is the daughter of Laurie Metcalf who plays his mum in TBBT!
Really? They look so different and their characters are quite different too.

That's exactly what I mean about discrepancies, it's slightly jarring that the two are so different
FallonCarringtonWannabe · 24/12/2021 23:30

Sheldon doesnt realise what his family did and sacrificed for him. He could never see that even in tbbt. Voice over sheldon in ys is much older and can now understand.

MerylSqueak · 24/12/2021 23:44

I cannot get along with TBBT at all.

I really enjoyed YS.

I watch both in the background as it's really my DD watching them, but I often find myself sitting down to YS and I often find myself finding TBBT awfully sexist (but I appreciate this may be because I don't really watch it).

Boulshired · 24/12/2021 23:50

Tbbt went on to long that I forgot how much I enjoyed the first 3/4 seasons, I do enjoy young sheldon but now also feel that enough is enough and probably will not carry on.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 25/12/2021 00:55

Yes I agree! I loved Young Sheldon so tried watching TBBT and couldn't get into it at all

Gilead · 25/12/2021 01:04

I feel it’s point and laugh at the neurodivergents trying to live their lives!
Not a popular opinion I know.

SusannaQueen · 25/12/2021 01:09

I suspect young Sheldon is rubbish if you've not seen the big Sheldon.

I've never seen Big Sheldon, but I'm loving Young Sheldon. Love the dialogue between Sheldon and his sister, she has some great lines, as does his grandma.

BeaLola · 25/12/2021 01:19

We have just binge watched on Netflix YS - we all love it - DH and DS14 - we haven't seen TBBT

All the characters are great Meemaw, Missy , Georgie etc

mygenericusername · 25/12/2021 01:26

I love the TBBT. Young Sheldon is a little on the dull side. I agree though that TBBT, modern family, friends all went in for a series more than needed.

Two and a half men was also two series too long for my liking by the end it was just ridiculous

InTheNightWeWillWish · 25/12/2021 01:50

TBBT dragged on in the middle and I think that’s common of a lot of US shows, they aim for 10 seasons even if they should actually stop way before that. The selling point of TBBT was the awkward, nerdy guys trying to fit in. As soon as they all got girlfriends it lost that a little bit. They tried to redeem it a little bit with some of the character arcs and relationships but most of them felt forced.

YS is so sweet. I love the characters and they balance each other really well. Nobody is just in to make up the numbers, everyone has a role. I agree with the discrepancies between the two. We are reaching the point when George is going to die and I think that’s going to seriously change the dynamics of the show. Or for those who have watched both, people will struggle to get over the discrepancies. I agree about PPs point about Penny reminding Sheldon of Missy and their relationship makes a lot of sense with YS. I also think mee-maw as she is in YS is similar to Penny too. It’s possibly also why Mary in TBBT tries to mother/steer Penny in the right direction.

The child actors in YS are fantastic. Every single one of them has had at least one scene where adults would struggle to show that emotion (or hide that emotion in Sheldon’s case) and they’ve done it beautifully.

SpacePotato · 25/12/2021 02:12

Yeah, Tbbt was dead in the water once they all, except raj, got in long term relationships and got married. No where to go after that.

EdgeOfACoin · 25/12/2021 07:24

George Sr died when Sheldon was 14, I think.

Also, I remember reading something about the writers of the show wanting to show that George Sr wasn't just the philandering drunk that Sheldon remembered him as. The actual person was far more rounded than Sheldon gave him credit for.

That said, I think there are other discrepancies in the character (For instance, I'm pretty sure Sheldon refers to his dad having a job other than being a football coach in TBBT.)

I love YS though.

BeLessMe · 25/12/2021 07:41

@FoxIvy

Regarding the canned laughter on TBBT, it was filmed in front of a live audience. Is that what people mean when they refer to canned laughter now?
I looked into trying to get tickets for my 40th as I loved the show so much. The cast flash mob dancing was brilliant and shows the audience.
MadisonAvenue · 25/12/2021 11:45

We did the WB Studio Tour last time we were in LA in 2016, it still blows my mind that we were taken into the TBBT soundstage and sat in the audience seats with Sheldon and Penny’s apartments right in front of us.

We were due to go back last year, but obviously couldn’t, and were going to do the tour again now that you can actually go on the sets.

Early tbbt Missy comes to get Sheldon's signature for papers relating to their fathers estate.
So from that I assume he'd died recently rather than a long time before.

Nodancingshoes · 25/12/2021 12:56

I love young Sheldon. I have only limited knowledge of TBBT and still love YS.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/12/2021 13:00

Sorry I see what you mean with discrepencies re his dad. Tbf the dad is always drinking beer so although he isnt drunk / a drunk, I can see how a kid might deduce that.

Man, the affair and the death will make for sad viewing I'll bet.

I wonder if they'll end the show there?

As a geek, I prefer the early Big Bang Theory where it was more about the nerdy humour than trying to be an erudite version of friends as it go to be later
However Young Sheldon, as others have said is brilliant with stand out acting
