...to feel sad that MIL has wrapped presents in glitter paper?

Can't recycle it. She knows we try really hard to recycle. We are always finding recyclable plastic in her general waste bin. My DH and I will have to bite our tongues on Xmas day as we scrunch the glitter paper into the bin. I know my husband will want to say something but it will make MIL feel bad and make us look ungrateful. I can't stand glitter!

Sometimes an OP is just wrong and most people agree and say so.

You know what, it is possible to disagree with people without the general unpleasantness that many Mumsnetters seem to revel in.

It feels like a competition for who can make the bitchiest, snarkiest response to the OP.

It's Christmas, how about sharing some peace and love instead?

Draggondragon · 24/12/2021 08:19

Peace and love isn't going through your mums bin! This OP is truly a Christmas gift though, hilarious.

Yeah like not moaning about a child's grandparent wrapping gifts in glitter paper. Some grandparents don't bother with their grandchildren and some children get nothing at all.

As for policing your mothers bin...... you think that comes from a place of peace and love?

Some people need to realise just how lucky they are!

As long as you approve of what it’s wrapped in, right?

Enko · 24/12/2021 09:24

Yabu you and dh do for the environment what you wish and mil does what she wishes.

Dh and I used cloth nappies not disposable. I preferred this as did dh but i did not preach to our friends they had to unless they asked.

I have some glitter stamped Christmas wrapping paper. I bought around 10 rolls years ago. I didn't know that the glitter meant it couldn't be recycled at the time. I won't be repurchasing after it runs out but in the meantime I'm still using it. It's either that or throw it straight into landfill.

OP:

Don’t be so silly and so precious. Sad, indeed. 🙄

Click bait.

@alfagirl73

When I was a kid (40 years ago!) we always took wrapping paper off carefully and re-used it. There was much horror, pearl clutching and summoning of a policeman if any of us dared to carelessly rip paper off a present! And if it genuinely couldn't be removed in such a way to reuse it, it was still saved and used for making cards or decorations the next year... or was donated to the church, school, brownies... whatever. Everything got reused - and that was long before anyone had even heard of a recycling bin.

I grew up with a grandmother who had been through 2 wars - she wasted nothing and we were taught the same. Again - no recycling bin!

If you're that passionate about recycling that you feel justified in raiding your MIL's bin, I'm baffled how it hasn't occurred to you that recycling actually starts with reusing items such as this. I can think of many uses for it right off the top of my head.

I'm not a fan of glitter as such, but y'know what, it's Christmas and there is enough sadness and pain in the world right now without getting all bent out of shape over some glittery wrapping paper around a gift that your MIL has no doubt lovingly chosen for you, and paper that, despite your claims, can absolutely be recycled in many ways that don't involve different coloured bins.

100%this! I'm old enough to remember mum using string bags for shopping, reuseable drinks bottles etc so I'm sure MIL has spent her life being very green before it was something to be so damm sanctimonious about!

@alfagirl73 for Prime Minister! What a great post politely summing up everyone's irritations Flowers

YANBU at all. I've made lots of reusable fabric wraps, tied with ribbons, to avoid this scenario. No need to use any wrapping paper at all

Feelingoood · 26/12/2021 09:24

Wow! What a terrible piece of writing and non news, it smacks of desperation. I hope Jessica feels proud of her Pulitzer Prize winning journalism. Is the journalist the OP ? I feel betrayed somehow!

Flutterflybutterby · 26/12/2021 09:26

YAB a bit dramatic
