...to feel sad that MIL has wrapped presents in glitter paper?

Can't recycle it. She knows we try really hard to recycle. We are always finding recyclable plastic in her general waste bin. My DH and I will have to bite our tongues on Xmas day as we scrunch the glitter paper into the bin. I know my husband will want to say something but it will make MIL feel bad and make us look ungrateful. I can't stand glitter!

@SundayTeatime

I think you need to let it go. She probably doesn’t realise. We re-use wrapping paper. We’ve had some on the go for years. It’s a bit of a game - recognise the wrapping paper. We won’t buy any more, though.
We reuse the gift bags over and over. They go round and round family members every Christmas or birthday. Some of them have been on the go for years. Wrapping paper really good for cutting and sticking type activities.
Cactusandmarshmallows · 23/12/2021 12:05

Unless you’re living off-grid and don’t use any single-use plastic, don’t have a car, don’t drive anywhere you could reach via public transport, don’t take plane trips etc there’s a good chance you make environmental choices yourself that are much worse than this paper.

I had a friend like you. I think she criticised other people’s environmental choices as it allowed her to feel smug without making real, tangible changes herself.

Fridgenomynous · 23/12/2021 12:08

My BIL has been arrested several times during Extinction Rebellion protests and he broke up with his lovely girlfriend because she wanted kids and he was not willing to be responsible for the environmental impact of children.I’ve just told him about this thread and your DH’s judgmental rooting around in the bin. He says that you and your DH are rude and he’s surprised MIL even lets you visit.

Absolutely fecking hilarious on soooooo many levels.

Proves how dumb ExtReb are though 🤣

PinkSyCo · 23/12/2021 12:08

You could always reuse the wrapping paper, like my eco friendly before their time parents used to do, rather than throwing it in the bin. No ripping the paper off with abandonment for us when we were kids haha.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/12/2021 12:12

this just reminds me of a family I came across on youtube. Vegan, wooden toys, reusable nappies etc but they have 8 children and another on the way and I suspect it won't be the last.

I don’t get it. You think he is dumb for not endorsing the Judgmental Raccoon behaviour?
Elphame · 23/12/2021 12:15

Our local council ( Bath) is not accepting any Christmas wrapping paper this year, glitter or not. It all has to go in general waste

lollipoprainbow · 23/12/2021 12:16

I feel 'sad' that my dd doesn't get any presents from her GP's, sparkly paper or no sparkly paper !

whynotwhatknot · 23/12/2021 12:17

You think youve read it all-he goes through is mothers bin telling her off for not recycling things

get a life

KatyRebecca84 · 23/12/2021 12:18

I honestly don't know how this can bother you so much that you needed to post about it! Given what's happening in the world right now, it isn't a big deal just re use it!!

ElephantOfRisk · 23/12/2021 12:19

yep, all bar one of my DCs GPs had died either before they were born or when they were babies/toddlers.

I'd have just have liked them to have them around to love them regardless of presents/sparkly paper.

I'm sure the MiL in this case wrapped them thinking the DCs would love the glitter and how special it looked.

HeckyPeck · 23/12/2021 12:20

YANBU. Glitter paper is annoying as hell.

crazyjinglist · 23/12/2021 12:20

The comments on this thread make me realise that the human race deserves to destroy itself. But at least we got to enjoy a bit of glitter.

Don't be so ridiculous. Nobody on this thread has said that it's not a good idea to use recyclable paper. They are just pointing out that it's twatty and pointless to get your knickers in a twist about what paper somebody else uses, particularly when you could just choose to reuse it rather than being terribly sad about it Hmm.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 23/12/2021 12:24

It's not really the season for being 'eco-friendlier than thou'. Glitterball

ItIsntWhatYouThinkItIs · 23/12/2021 12:25

YABU Kids LOVE glitter. It's Christmas! Give the holier than thou eco thing a rest. Just for the childrens sake.

StoppedWineIng · 23/12/2021 12:27

Our council aren't taking any wrapping paper for recycling this year 🤷🏻‍♀️

SilkLabrador · 23/12/2021 12:29

At least she wraps them. Grandparents (both sides) keep presenting mien with Amazon boxes!

ItIsntWhatYouThinkItIs · 23/12/2021 12:29

@somehowsunshine

DH tends to look through the top of his mums bin when we're round, and usually pulls out 5 or 6 plastic items or cans that can be recycled. Mil can't be bothered which really pisses us off! He does it to make a point of how much she must throw into landfill instead of recycling.
I think the term eco terrorists was coined with your husband in mind. I care about the environment and do the best I can to recycle, but people like you and your husband really ruin it for everyone and give us all a bad name. It's CHRISTMAS!!! Let your children enjoy the magic of pretty sparkly glitter. I feel so sorry for the current generation when I think of the magic my generation, only 30 years ago, had. It's so sad.
Emmas85 · 23/12/2021 12:31

@Octavi

Yes get a grip! If that's all you have to worry about you're bloody lucky.
This! A million times this!
Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 23/12/2021 12:31

Fabric is the way to go go.
Just get frabric and re use it can event get special fc fabric that he can re use each year.

It's so awful.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 23/12/2021 12:32

Eco terrorist or cult like.
I dislike any extreme behaviour.

100problems · 23/12/2021 12:38

Sad. Biting lips. Needing to say something.

Seize the opportunity OP! You can educate her planet destroying ass for Christmas.

ElephantOfRisk · 23/12/2021 12:42

Maybe she bought the paper a long time ago and surely it's better you use it than through it away unused and buy more that may or may not be recycled? The damage was done when the paper was made not when it was used.

tulips27 · 23/12/2021 12:45

I can't read the whole thread but you could save the paper and use it to make little gift tags next year.
